Chong Myung Tang is consisted of three medicinal herbs (Acori Graminei Rhizoma, Polygalae Radix and Hoelen cum Radix). It has been used as a medicine for the purpose of learning and memory improvement. In this paper, Chong Myung Tang was screened the biological activities for Alzheimer's disease. The extract (70% ethanol) of Acari Graminei Rhizoma (1 mg/ml) showed that acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and amyloid beta ($A{\beta}$) peptide aggregation inhibitory potency are 43.1% and 76.5%, respectively. The extract of Polygalae Radix showed inhibitory activity against $A{\beta}_{1-42}$ peptide aggregation (51.5%). To predict the drug-likeness, oral absorption ability; blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetraion rate, mutagenecity and carcinogenicity; in silico screening was performed against 16 compounds in the three medicinal herbs. According to the results, all compounds have appropriate chemical structures as medicines. The six compounds in Acori Graminei Rhizoma and the five compounds in Hoelen cum Radix showed excellent oral absorption rate and BBB penetration rate. The four compounds in Polygalae Radix showed excellent oral absorption rate, but their BBB penetration was presented low rate. And, the extract of Hoelen cum Radix didn't show AChE and $A{\beta}_{1-42}$ peptide aggregation inhibitory activities in vitro. Therefore, their activity in brain may be other mechanism. According to all of the results, in silico prediction technology is convenient and effective to determine biological active compounds in medicinal herbs.
Blood monocytes are the precursors for the lipid-laden foam cells of early atherosclerotic lesions. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1), a CC chemokine, and chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) play a crucial role in the recruitment of monocytes to the vascular lesion. Using the human monocyte THP-1 cell line, we investigate the inhibitory effects of methanol extracts of 127 medicinal herbs on MCP-1 induced chemotaxis. Seven kinds of methanol extracts of medicinal herbs showed above 40% inhibitory effect with the concentration of $25{\mu}g/ml$. They were divide three fractions of $CHCI_3$, BuOH, $H_2O$ to use solvent partition. Among them, butanol extract of Junci Medulla and $CHCI_3$ extract of Clematidis Radix are showed significant inhibitory activities (above 50% inhibition) at the same concentration.
This purpose of this study is to examine the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Persicaria hydropiper L. extract in 70% ethanol and in water, a medicinal herb, as an effort to examine the potential of medicinal herbs for development of antioxidants and natural preservative substitutes. The total poly-phenol content in the 70% ethanol extract and in the water extract were 19.88 mg/g and 7.46 mg/g, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was 90.99% and 64.98% in the 70% ethanol extract and water extract, in which 70% ethanol extract showed a higher activity. The antioxidant effect of Persicaria hydropiper L. extract appears to be very good and due to its excellent growth inhibitory effect on food-poisoning-causing microorganisms in the food, it is thought to be utilized as a potential natural preservative substitute in many areas.
Irradiated and non-irradiated Korean medicinal herbs were extracted by water and 70% ethanol. Antimicrobial activity of these extracts were invesigated against selected food hygiene microoganisms. The ethanol extracts of the non-irradiated Agrimonia pilosa ledebour japonica Nakai, Curcuma longa Linne and Angelica gigas Nakai were completely inhibited on four species of bacteria, such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Clostridium perfringenes, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Also, above four strains did not have antibacterial activity in the water-ethanol mixtures. Futhermore, the ehtanol extracts of the non-irradiated Agimonia pilosa ledebour Japonica Nakai, Curcuma Iedoaria Roscoe, Curcuma longa Linne and Scutellaria baikalensis George were shown inhibitory effects against Aspergillus flavus and Pen icillium islandicum. And the water extract of Scutellaria baikalensis George was the same effect to these molds. Essentially the same results were observed when samples irradiated at a dose of 10 kGy.
Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is predicted to be therapeutic target in treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Thus, in order to search for PTP1B inhibitors, we screened the inhibitory activity of PTP1B in the water extracts of 84 medicinal herbs. Among them, the extracts of Pini Folium, Magnoliae Cortex, Artemisiae asiaticae Herba, Schizonepetae Herba, Menthae Herba, Mume Fructus, Cimicifugae Rhizoma, and Amomi Cardamomi Fructus showed relatively significant (58-68%) inhibitory activity against PTP1B. Especially, the methylene chloride fraction of the methanol extract of Menthae Herba (81% inhibition at 30 ${\mu}g$/ml) showed more potent inhibitory activity against PTP1B than others.

In our study, as many as 29 edible medicinal herbs were selected for testing their ability in the effective treatment of gout based on oriental medicine theory. We extracted each medicinal herb (135 g) with 4 L of distilled water at $100{\sim}105^{\circ}C$ for 210 min. Thereafter, we evaluated both the antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibition activities of the extracts obtained. Among all the edible medicinal herbs used in our study, only the extract from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Korean name: hwang-geum) showed (1) the maximum total phenolic content (TPC) (2.25 mg gallic acid equivalent/mL), (2) DPPH radical scavenging activity (94.04%), and (3) xanthine oxidase inhibition activity (87.75%). We also observed that TPC was relatively highly correlated with both the DPPH radical scavenging activity (r=0.63) and xanthine oxidase inhibition activity (r=0.77). Our results suggest that S. baicalensis G. may be a potent antioxidant source for the extraction and development of nutraceuticals that may be utilized for effective treatment of gout.

As inhibitors of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes can prevent hyperglycemia that is known to cause many macrovascular complications, they may prove a useful adjunct to hypocaloric diets in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity. Inhibitory activities of two hundred and fifteen kinds of medicinal herb extracts against $\alpha$-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20) and $\alpha$-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) have been investigated in vitro. Adenophora triphylla, Aneilema keisak, and Morus bombysis significantly suppressed rat intestinal $\alpha$-glucosidase activity iu vitro. Porcine pancreatic amylase was efficiently inhibited by methanol extracts of Epimedium koreanum, Campsis grandiflora and Salvia plebeia. Methanol extract of Epimedium koreanum among the medicinal herbs tested showed the strongest inhibitory activity against porcine pancreatic $\alpha$-amylase with 0.1 mg/ML of $IC_{50}$/. The herb extract also improved glucose tolerance in ICR mice when loaded with 0.9 g soluble starch per kg body weight. Taken together, Epimedium koreanum merits further evaluation as a therapeutic measure.
This study was carried out to investigate antioxidative, antimicrobial activity and the effect on hepatotoxicity in various extracts of Artemisia iwayomogi. The herb has been used widely for jaundice, hepatitis and liver cirrhosis in chinese medicine. Solid yield by various extraction solvents, 18.1%, was the highest in water extract. To find antioxidative activity in Artemisia iwayomogi was estimated radical scavenging effect by DPPH method in various extracts and change of the POV(peroxide value) of various extracts added in soybean oil during 20 days at $60^{\circ}C$. Radical scavenging effect by DPPH method was the most effective in methanol extract. Added 1,000ppm water extract and methanol extract in soybean oil, the POV of them, 46.8(meq/kg) and 50.8(meq/kg) were lower than that of control, 79.1(meq/kg), during 20 days storage. After antimicrobial activity of various extracts of Artemisia iwayomogi on bacteria was carried out by paper disc method, it found that the ethanol extract was the strongest activity on Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In vivo experiment was to investigate the effect of Artemisia iwayomogi water extract(AIWE) on hepatotoxicity by carbon tetrachloride$(CCl_4)$ in rats. The experiment groups were divided into five groups for recovery(for 3 days) and three groups for protection(for 10 days) in rat liver. The weights and morphological changes of liver and the body weight were examined in each groups. Compared with $CCl_4$ treatment groups$(CCl_4\;only)$, liver and liver/body(%) weights of AIWE pretreatment groups for 3 days and AIWE posttreatment groups for 10 days were declined. In macrography, fibrious exudates and swelling of liver were decreased in AIWE treatment groups. Accumulation of lipid droplets and necrosis of hepatocytes were also decreased in AIWE treatment groups in microscopically. In these results, AIWE seems to enhance hepato-protective and recoverable effect on $CCl_4$ induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
Several herbs were tested for their antimicrobial activities during preservation of soy sauces. The herbs which resulted in retarded growth of film yeasts were extracted and added to various media such as koji-extract agar, buion-peptone agar to elucidate effects on the growth of film yeasts, Aspergillus oryzae and Bacillus subtilis. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Addition of phellodendron powder resulted in retarded formation of film in fermented soy sauces. Film was produced after 2 days without addition of the phellodendron powder. However, formation of film was observed after 8 days when 0.5 per cent of the phellodendron powder was added, and after 12 days when 1.0 per cent of the powder was added to fermented soy sauce. 2) For the amino acid soy sauce, formation of film was retarded for 6 days by 0.5 per cent of the pow der and for 8 days by 1.0 per cent of the powder. 3) Repression of film yeasts by addition of helenii and camphora powder was recognized respectively, but other herbs were appeared to have no detectable effects. 4) Growth of film yeast and Asp. oryzae way, retarded for 5 days on koji-extract agar plates which contain 0.5 per cent of phellodendron extract. Bac. subtilis also showed retarded growth for 5 days on buion-peptone agar plates containing the same amount of the extract. 5) Retarded growth of film yeast for 5 days was obtained when grown on koji-extract agar plates containing 15 per cent of sodium chloride and 0.3 per cent of phellodendron powder, however, no growth of Asp. oryzae was obtained on this concentration of sodium chloride. Growth of Bac. subtilis was repressed for 5 days on buion-peptone agar plates which contain 15 per cent of sodium chloride and 0.1 per cent of phellodendron powder.
This experiment was carried out to investigated the changes in proximate composition, pH, thiobarbituric acid value(TBA) and fatty acid composition of pure jemsosojoo added medicinal herbs(JMH) and medicinal herbs (MH) during sotrage perid (30days) at 4$^{\circ}C$. Three black goat with 18-19 kg live weight were slaughtered to obtain samples from extracts. The results were as follows ; moisture, crude protein , crude fat content of PJ were higher than other treatment , but ash content in MH was higher than others. Chemical composition did not affect storage period. the ph of the PJ was ranged from 6.47-6.57 , the JMH was ranged from 5.05-5.09, the MH was ranged from 4.68-4.70. The pH of MH was lower than other treatment . The TBA value of all treatment were gradually increased during storage period. Oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid were major fatty acids of the PK and the JMH, Especially, linolenic acid and linolenic acid content were higher in the JMH than those of the PJ. Lipid oxidation tend to be delayed with the addition medicinal herbs.
