The medical library, as a professional information center in relation to medical examination and treatment, research, and medical administration, should be operated under the rational and efficient library management. In that context, this study examines the theoretical underpinnings of the medical library management, and compares and analyzes, through direct visits, webpages, and statistical data, the current library operation of medical libraries in Seoul. This study also tries to make a managemental framework for the medical library by suggesting and discussing the result of this research.
The study was to investigate the distribution for the diagnosis of pattern identification questionnaire and agreement rate between diagnosis of pattern identification based on obesity pattern identification questionnaire and the clinical diagnosis of pattern' identification by medical specialist. The distribution for the diagnosis of pattern identification based on obesity pattern identification questionnaire was shown in order of stagnation of liver Gi, retention of undigested food, deficiency of Yang at scale of 5, 3, 2 score and the diagnosis rate of single pattern identification at scale of 5, 3, 2 score was 89.96%, 79.33%, 54.64%, respectively the agreement rate between the diagnosis of pattern identification based on obesity pattern identification questionnaire and the clinical diagnosis of pattern identification by medical specialist was 0.1013. Therefore, the complementary management in CRF questionnaires with consultation from experts and the study for score difference of pattern identification will improve the accuracy and agreement rate, which will will be helpful for pattern identification of obesity by clinical experts.
The Korean Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgical Society was founded in 1968. After the first Board Certified Examination in 1972, the Society consists of 592 members including 392 specialists [certified board members] now in 1992. Many of the great advances in cardiothoracic surgery were made by pioneering efforts of these members. The annual increment rate of certified board members in KTCSS [KTCSS Boardmen] was 11.9% which was slight greater than that of doctors [6.6%] and overall specialists [9.9%] in Korea. Their working territories were mainly urban areas [91.9%]. Some states showed regional discrepancy in supply/demand of KTCSS Boardmen. 56.1% of all [73.5% of active members] was working at a larger institute than general hospital. There were 99 institutes [41university hospitals and 58 general hospitals] and 76 private clinics where KTCSS Boardmen were employed, and more than three quarters of those institutes have less than 3 in number of KTCSS Boardmen. The rate of practicing private clinics was declined from over than 50% of the beginning to less than 30% now. We propose this survey for a basic data for specialist supply/demand and resident training program.
This study analyzed the reporting activities of journalists who covered MERS-CoV in 2015. Twenty-one reporters were interviewed to investigate their differences in reporting. They were categorized into four small groups based on their specialism and professionalism. Some specialist reporters answered that they acknowledged the first MERS patient through an external source. A few special reporters contacted foreign experts for further information and one of them answered that she read academic articles on MERS to verify governmental announcements. Specialist reporter groups and the other groups showed difference when they were asked the situation they felt something was going wrong in governmental communication: Many specialist reporters pointed out the outbreak of a patient from out of the monitoring people, but many general reporters emphasized the policy of the government not to reveal the name of hospitals that the outbreaks happened.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between each pattern identification such as Dampness-Phlegm, Fire-Heat, Deficiency of Qi, Deficiency of Yin and Blood Stagnation and blood lipid level in acute stroke patients. This study was done over patients hospitalized in 13 Oriental Medical Hospitals in the period of November 2006 to Jun 2009. Patients had been interviewed by residents and medical specialists who studied standard operation procedures in Fundamental Study for Syndrome of Oriental Medicine for Stroke. Study subjects consisted of group A that was distributed to specified pattern identification by medical specialist and discriminating program, group B that was distributed to specified pattern identification by medical specialist or discriminating program, and the control group that wasn't distributed to specified pattern identification by medical specialist and discriminating program. For the purpose of obtaining suitable result, we analyzed blood lipid level of each group by univariate analysis. In this study, there was not statistically significant relation between most of each pattern identification and blood lipid level except relation between Fire-Heat pattern group B and decreasing HDL cholesterol. Based on these results, it is suggested that Dampness-Phlegm would not be the independent predictors of hyperlipidemia unlike other studies that were presented in. More prospective studies between Fire-Heat and decreasing HDL cholesterol are to be done with more clinical data.
Background : In many university hospitals, intravenous(IV) therapies and samplings had been one of the most important works of doctors who are in training. However, recently as patient oriented care is becoming more weighted for qualified health service IV therapies should be the works of specialized personnels. This study was conducted to investigate the medical staff's perception on IV team, to survey patient or parent's expectation on IV team, and to assess the frequency of IV therapy related complications and the characteristics of phlebitis among the hospitalized children. Methods : We collected data prospectively before the start of IV team from February 22 to February 29. 1999 and from September 27 to October 3, 1999, 6 months after beginning of IV team at Seoul National University Children's Hospital. IV team started their activities from March 1, 1999. General pediatric wards were not included for the IV and sampling team and oncology ward and surgical units were all included for the IV and sampling team's work. IV specialist was the well trained nurse who had been working in the field of pediatrics especially for the oncology patients. The subjects of this study were medical staffs who were working in children's hospital as doctors in training and patients who were treated with IV therapies in children's hospital during the same period. Results : Doctors responded that IV team need to be organized for IV care and expected IV team could reduce their work load. Parents of patients also responded IV team was very improtant to perform high quality IV care. They had willingness to pay extra charge for IV team care. In the wards where IV team did not work, they used various kinds and sizes of catheters, but in the wards where IV team worked, they needed just one or two types of catheters. As the exact role of IV team is not still established, job description is needed between the IV team and medical doctors. In the aspects of medical costs. it could save the materials for the IV also. Conclusion : This study showed that IV team could increase patient's satisfaction with decrease of medical doctors work load and concomitantly could save the costs of IV materials. And for the expansion of the IV team, job description is needed and for the total care of the children IV specialist and sampling team should expand their roles.

Ontology maintenance is a time consuming and costly process which requires special skill and knowledge. It requires joint effort of both ontology engineer and domain specialist to properly maintain ontology and update knowledge in it. This is specially true for medical domain which is highly specialized domain. This paper proposes a novel approach for maintenance and update of existing ontologies in a medical domain. The proposed approach is based on modified Ontology Maturing Process which was originally developed for web domain. The proposed approach provides way to populate medical ontology with new knowledge obtained from medical documents. This is achieved through use of natural language processing techniques and highly specialized medical knowledge bases such as Unified Medical Language System.
Bioterrorism events have worldwide impacts, not only in terms of security and public health policy, but also in other related sectors. Many countries, including Korea, have set up new administrative and operational structures and adapted their preparedness and response plans in order to deal with new kinds of threats. Korea has dual surveillance systems for the early detection of bioterrorism. The first is syndromic surveillance that typically monitors non-specific clinical information that may indicate possible bioterrorism-associated diseases before specific diagnoses are made. The other is infectious disease specialist network that diagnoses and responds to specific illnesses caused by intentional release of biologic agents. Infectious disease physicians, clinical microbiologists, and infection control professionals play critical and complementary roles in these networks. Infectious disease specialists should develop practical and realistic response plans for their institutions in partnership with local and state health departments, in preparation for a real or suspected bioterrorism attack.
