  • This paper suggest a methodology for representation of findings which can be called as signs and symptoms. A finding consists of unit signs and unit symptoms, and moreover findings which appear in one individual patient have so many different relationship each other. So, it is nat appropriate to list all of possible findings as medical standard or to fill findings as independent things in paper for medical record. We try to distinguish finding item from finding list, and suggest the methodology by which we can make finding list from finding items. That is, we suggest finding item[Concept], value types, relationship, logical operator, and syntax as a component of representation. And by using urinary symptom, we make the example for representation methodology. Finally, we mention the background knowledge, brief research process of related area.

  • The advances in electronic medical records (EMRs) and bioinformatics (BI) represent two significant trends in healthcare. The widespread adoption of EMR systems and the completion of the Human Genome Project developed the technologies for data acquisition, analysis, and visualization in two different domains. The massive amount of data from both clinical and biology domains is expected to provide personalized, preventive, and predictive healthcare services in the near future. The integrated use of EMR and BI data needs to consider four key informatics areas: data modeling, analytics, standardization, and privacy. Bioclinical data warehouses integrating heterogeneous patient-related clinical or omics data should be considered. The representative standardization effort by the Clinical Bioinformatics Ontology (CBO) aims to provide uniquely identified concepts to include molecular pathology terminologies. Since individual genome data are easily used to predict current and future health status, different safeguards to ensure confidentiality should be considered. In this paper, we focused on the informatics aspects of integrating the EMR community and BI community by identifying opportunities, challenges, and approaches to provide the best possible care service for our patients and the population.

  • In microarray data analysis, recent efforts have focused on the discovery of gene sets from a pathway or functional categories such as Gene Ontology terms(GO terms) rather than on individual gene function for its direct interpretation of genome-wide expression data. We introduce a meta-analysis method that combines $p$-values for changes of each gene in the group. The method measures the significance of overall treatment-induced change in a gene group. An application of the method to a real data demonstrates that it has benefits over other statistical methods such as Fisher's exact test and permutation methods. The method is implemented in a SAS program and it is available on the author's homepage(http://cafe.daum.net/go.analysis).

  • The need for content-based retrieval from visual media, such as image and video data, is ever increasing rapidly in many applications, such as electronic art museums, internet shopping malls, internet search engines, and medical information systems. In our previous research, we proposed an architecture, called the HERMES, which is a Web Service-enabled visual media retrieval framework. In this paper, we propose the Web Service workflows that are employed in the HERMES. We describe how we designed the workflows for service registration and query processing in the framework. We especially explain how metadata and ontology can be utilized to realize more intelligent content-based retrieval on visual media data.

  • Recent advances in medical science have made people live longer, which has affected many aspects of life, such as caregiver burden, increasing cost of healthcare, increasing number of disabled and depressive disorder persons, and so on. Researchers are now focused on elderly living assistance services in smart home environments. In recent years, assisted living technologies have rapidly grown due to a faster growing aging society. Many smart devices are now interconnected within the home network environment and such a home setup supports collaborations between those devices based on the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the major challenges in providing elderly living assistance services is to consider each individual's requirements of different needs. In order to solve this, the virtualization of physical things, as well as the collaboration and composition of services provided by these physical things should be considered. In order to meet these challenges, Web of Objects (WoO) focuses on the implementation aspects of IoT to bring the assorted real world objects with the web applications. We proposed a semantic modelling technique for manual and semi-automated service composition. The aim of this work is to propose a framework to enable RESTful web services composition using semantic ontology for elderly living assistance services creation in WoO based smart home environment.

  • J.D. Salinger's 1951 novel, Catcher in the Rye, has generally been known as a story of a young rebel, Holden Caulfield, who tries to break away from reality in the fifties, a decade prevalent with the strict rule and faultfinding culture of what he is taught at school: to simplify and unify. This novel often refers to a journey of an outsider who commits to playing a catcher in the rye, a fantasy world of innocence, infinity, and youth. As the story unfolds, Holden's ontology is rendered to show how vulnerable his affective ontology is to the ideological reality of containment and conformity. This informs how Holden is a pathological character that reifies the performative crisis of the postwar US Cold War ideology. That said, this paper examines the extent to which this novel can be possibly read as a narrative of illness to expose Holden's pathological conditions of illness, hysteria, and psychosis. Thus, it looks at his medical symptoms whose pathogens I attempt to analyze in terms of his affective potential of being ontologically engaged to the historical context, or the political unconscious, of the postwar US in the early Cold War years.

  • Recently, the development of sensors and the mobile communication device offers a number of possibilities in the medical and related fields. However, this data is generated, it is difficult to match the metadata and standard units. The data integration is required to use the data generated by the different specifications of the sensor efficiently. Accordingly, in this paper we propose a method using an ontology as a method to integrate the data generated by the existing sensors and the new sensor. The ontology is mapping to the standard item and sensors, also include a type and structural difference. The mapping is comprised of two : data mapping, and metadata mapping. There are standard items that are created in this way, type of data exchange between services. This can solve the heterogeneous problem generated by sensors.

  • Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an aggressive neoplasm and is an extremely rare disease, with a challenging diagnosis. Etiology of IDCS is also unknown and most studies with only case reports. In our case, immunohistochemistry showed that the tumor cells were positive for S100, CD45, and CD68, but negative for CD1a and CD21. This study aimed to investigate the causative factors of IDCS by sequencing the protein-coding regions of IDCS. We performed whole-exome sequencing with genomic DNA from blood and sarcoma tissue of the IDCS patient using the Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform. After that, we conducted Sanger sequencing for validation of sarcoma-specific variants and gene ontology analysis using DAVID bioinformatics resources. Through comparing sequencing data of sarcoma with normal blood, we obtained 15 nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as sarcoma-specific variants. Although the 15 SNPs were not validated by Sanger sequencing due to tumor heterogeneity and low sensitivity of Sanger sequencing, we examined the function of the genes in which each SNP is located. Based on previous studies and gene ontology database, we found that POLQ encoding DNA polymerase theta enzyme and FNIP1 encoding tumor suppressor folliculin-interacting protein might have contributed to the IDCS. Our study provides potential causative genetic factors of IDCS and plays a role in advancing the understanding of IDCS pathogenesis.

  • To improve the diagnosis and prescription for military personnel, it is required to adopt Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) in armed forces hospitals. The objective of this paper is to suggest a CDSS for armed forces hospitals using semantic web technologies. To this end, we designed military medical ontologies and military medical rules which consist of the various concepts and rules for supporting medical activities. We developed a semantic web-based CDSS to demonstrate the use of the ontologies and rules for treating military patients. We also showed the process of semantic search for the medical records which are created from the semantic web-based CDSS.
