A study on the Second-Harmonic Generation(SBG) Conversion Characteristics of Nd:YAG Laser adopted Differential Superposition Mesh (중첩회로를 적용한 펄스형 Nd:YAG 레이저의 2차 SHG 변환효율에 관한 특성연구)

  • A pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used widely for materials processing and medical instrument. It's very important to control the laser energy density in those fields using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. A pulse repetition rate and a pulse width are regarded as the most dominant factors to control the energy density of laser beam. In this paper, the alternating charge and discharge system was designed to adjust a pulse repetition rate. This system is controlled by microprocessor and allows to frequence an expensive condenser for high frequency to cheap one for low frequency. In addtion, The microcontroller monitors the flow of cooling water, short circuit, and miss firing and so on. We designed Nd:YAG laser firmware with smart microcontroller, and want to explain general matters about the firmware from now.

Effective Low-Level Laser Therapy Including Laser Acupuncture Treatment Conditions for Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

  • Low-level laser therapy including laser acupuncture has been widely used for non-specific chronic low back pain in primary Korean medical clinics. However, there is no critically appraised data regarding which treatment conditions are most effective. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine effective treatment conditions using 12 databases (PubMed, Ovid, CENTRAL, KoreaMed, KMBASE, KISS, NDSL, KISTI, OASIS, CNKI, CiNII, and J-STAGE). There were 1,019 studies retrieved and 13 studies included in this review. It was determined that when the power output was ≥ 50 mW, the beam size was increased to ≥ cm2, the energy dose was increased to ≥ 4 J per point, the treatment interval was increased to ≥ 3 times a week, and the number of treatment sessions was increased to ≥ 10 treatments, these conditions appeared to increased treatment effectiveness.

  • Onychomycosis is the most common disease of the nail, with a worldwide prevalence of 5.5%. It causes local pain, paresthesia, and cosmetic problems and decreases the patients' quality of life. Conventional treatments include the administration of topical and systemic agents. However, factors such as subungual hyperkeratosis and biofilm formation may affect the efficacy of these treatments. Moreover, side effects associated with systemic agents are a major concern for patients. Therefore, various novel treatments are being developed; among them, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and Nd:YAG laser are promising, and several studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of PDT and laser therapy. Here, we report the efficacy and tolerability of PDT combined with 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser therapy and topical efinaconazole for the treatment of three patients with refractory onychomycosis.

  • Biological tissues and organs are composed of different arrays of cells, biochemical cues, and extracellular matrices arranged in a complex microarchitecture. Laser-Assisted Bioprinting (LAB) is an emerging and promising technology that is reproducible with high accuracy that can be used for fabricating complex bioengineered scaffolds that mimic tissues and organs. The LAB process allows researchers to print intricate structural scaffolds using cells and different biomaterials essential for facilitating cell-scaffold interaction and to induce tissue and organ regeneration which cannot be achieved in a traditional scaffold fabrication. This process can fabricate artificial cell niches or architecture without affecting cellular viability and material integrity. This review tackles the basic principles and key aspects of Laser-Assisted Bioprinting. Recent advances, limitations, and future perspectives are also discussed.

  • Partial unilateral lentiginosis (PUL) is an unusual pigmentary disorder characterized by numerous lentigines on the skin, with onset usually during early childhood. It is characterized by unilateral segmental distribution with sharp margins in one or more dermatomes. Conventional laser treatments result in several adverse effects, such as mottled pigmentary changes (hyper or hypopigmentation), especially in people of Asian descent. A 57-year-old man with PUL on the neck was treated with a high-fluence 1,064-nm Q-switched (QS) neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. After 20 treatment sessions, the lesions markedly improved without adverse effects or recurrence. We suggest that high-fluence 1,064-nm QS Nd:YAG laser treatment is an effective and safe modality for PUL.

Post-acne Erythema Successfully Treated with 595-nm Picosecond-domain Neodymium:Yttrium-aluminum-garnet Laser

  • Post-acne erythema (PAE) is one of the major problems during or after treatment of acne vulgaris with any modality. A variety of therapeutic options have been described with various clinical outcomes and side effects. We report here on treating a patient with PAE using 595-nm picosecond-domain neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. After four sessions of treatment, the patient displayed nearly complete improvement and no remarkable adverse effects. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of the effective treatment of PAE using a 595-nm picosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser. We recommend that using a 595-nm picosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser can be both an effective and safe treatment option for treating PAE.

  • The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is one of the treatment options used for xanthelasma palpebrarum. However, even if the full dermal layer is removed, the lesion can recur due to the residual lipid deposits. A 44-year-old male patient with xanthelasma on both upper eyelids was treated with a pulsed dye CO2 laser. On the right upper eyelid, we carried out a CO2 laser treatment until the yellowish plaque was almost invisible and the full thickness of the dermal layer was removed. On the left upper eyelid, the dermal layer was partially removed and an additional squeezing out of yellowish particles was done. The lesion treated by the squeezing out of lipid droplets showed better long-term results than the lesion treated up to the deeper dermal layer.

  • Pyriform sinus cyst is a rare disease. This disease can be found by chance or appear as lymph nodes with cancer, infections, shortness of breath, or airway compromise, and can be an unusual cause of dysphonia. This paper presents a case of a pyriform sinus cyst in the pharyngeal wall of the left pyriform sinus, which presented as neck discomfort in a 63-year-old female. The plan was to remove this cyst with a transoral CO2 laser because a CO2 laser is a useful tool for removing cysts without bleeding and consuming time. The excision was performed successfully. Transoral laser pyriform sinus cyst excision is a simple, safe, and effective method for the treatment of pyriform sinus cysts. This procedure is likely to be used as a selective treatment when managing this condition.

  • A 50-year-old Korean female with oral erythro-leukoplakia was treated using a 532-nm Diode laser at 6 Watts with a pulsed width of 25 milliseconds. After two months following the laser treatment, the resected region was well-healed without any significant scar contracture. We suggest that the use of the 532-nm Diode laser can be a safe and effective treatment modality for patients suffering from oral leukoplakia.

  • Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a reactive hypermelanosis of the skin that occurs as a result of variable inflammatory processes, such as trauma, and many inflammatory conditions. Although a range of modalities of managing PIH have been reported, the treatment of PIH is challenging. In this report, a patient with PIH was treated using picosecond-domain Nd:YAG lasers. After three sessions of 1,064-nm picosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser treatment, the patient showed almost complete improvement with no remarkable side effects or recurrence over the duration of six months. Overall, 1,064-nm picosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser can be used effectively and safely for treating pigmented lesions in the dermis, particularly PIH, in Asian patients.
