  • Intravascular ultrasound images of coranary artery contain very important informations on heart disease. The intimal contours on the image show informations and data to examine intravascular problems of patients. A new computation algorithm to detect the intimal and adventitial contours from the intravascular images was developed. An Image processing on gray level image was used. It uses arrays of pixels in each radial lines on the images. A "Robert" filter was adopted at first step for one dimensional image processing. Some other calculation techniques were developed to inclose the accuracy of automatically detected contours. The standard contour data to compare with automatically detected contour data were obtained through manually tracing by experienced cardiological medical doctors. The result of the new algorithm shows high accuracy of 80 % matching with the standard contour data.

  • Recently, Digital Watermarking is used to authenticate data and to determine whether the data are distorted or not in medical images which is digitalized. The Fourier Mellin method using the Fourier Transform and the Log-Polar coordinate transform gets an invariant feature for RST distortion in images. But there are several problems in the real materialization. Interpolation of the image value should be considered according to the pixel position and so a watermark loss, original image distortion, numerical approximation is happened. Therefore there should be solved to realization of the Fourier Mellin method. Using the Look up table, there reduce the data loss caused by the conversion between Rectangular and Polar coordinate. After diagnose, medical images are transformed the Polar coordinate and taken the Discrete Fourier transform in the center of ROI region. Maintaining the symmetry in Fourier magnitude coefficient, the gaussian distributed random vectors and binary images are embedded in medical images.

  • Recently, the medical image has been digitized by the development of computer science and digitization of the medical devices. There are needs for database service of the medical image and long term storage because of the construction of PACS(picture archiving and communication system) following DICOM(digital imaging communications in medicine) standards, telemedicine, and et al. However, it also caused some kinds of problems, such as illegal reproduction of medical image, proprietary rights and data authentication. In this paper, we propose the new digital watermarking technique for medical image based on public key encryption algorithm for integrity verification. It prevents illegal forgery that can be caused after transmitting medical image data remotely. The watermark is the value of bit-plane in wavelet transform of the original image for certification method of integrity verification. We proposed the embedding regions are randomly chosen considering ROI, and a digital signature is made using hash function of MD5 which input is a secret key. The experimental results show that the watermark embedded by the proposed algorithm can survive successfully in image processing operations and that the watermark's invisibility is good.

  • Magnetic resonance image (MRI) is widely used in brain research field and medical image. Especially, non-invasive brain activation acquired image technique, which is functional magnetic resonance image (fMRI) is used in brain study. In this study, we investigate brain activation occurred by LED light stimulation. For investigate of brain activation in experimental small animal, we used high magnetic field 9.4T MRI. Experimental small animal is Balb/c mouse, method of fMRI is using echo planar image (EPI). EPI method spend more less time than any other MRI method. For this reason, however, EPI data has low contrast. Due to the low contrast, image pre-processing is very hard and inaccuracy. In this study, we planned the study protocol, which is called block design in fMRI research field. The block designed has 8 LED light stimulation session and 8 rest session. All block is consist of 6 EPI images and acquired 1 slice of EPI image is 16 second. During the light session, we occurred LED light stimulation for 1 minutes 36 seconds. During the rest session, we do not occurred light stimulation and remain the light off state for 1 minutes 36 seconds. This session repeat the all over the EPI scan time, so the total spend time of EPI scan has almost 26 minutes. After acquired EPI data, we performed the analysis of this image data. In this study, we analysis of EPI data using statistical parametric map (SPM) software and performed image pre-processing such as realignment, co-registration, normalization, smoothing of EPI data. The pre-processing of fMRI data have to segmented using this software. However this method has 3 different method which is Gaussian nonparametric, warped modulate, and tissue probability map. In this study we performed the this 3 different method and compared how they can change the result of fMRI analysis results. The result of this study show that LED light stimulation was activate superior colliculus region in mouse brain. And the most higher activated value of segmentation method was using tissue probability map. this study may help to improve brain activation study using EPI and SPM analysis.

  • The international standard for digital compression and coding of continuous-tone still image known as JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) standard is investigated for medical image archiving and communication. The JPEG standard has widely been accepted in the areas of electronic image communication, computer graphics, and multimedia applications, however, due to the lossy character of the JPEG compression its application to the field of medical imaging has been limited. In this paper, the JPEG standard is investigated for medical image compression with a series of head sections of magnetic resonance (MR) images (256 and 4096 graylevels, $256 {\times}256$size). Two types of Huffman codes are employed, i. e., one is optimized to the image statistics to be encoded and the other is a predetermined code, and their coding efficiencies are examined. From experiments, compression ratios of higher than 15 were obtained for the MR images without noticeable distortion. Error signal in the reconstructed images by the JPEG standard appears close to random noise. Compared to existing full-frame bit-allocation technique used for radiological image compression, the JPEG standard achieves higher compression with less Gibb's artifact. Feature of the progressive image build-up of the JPEG progressive coding may be useful in remote diognosis when data is transmitted through slow public communication channel.

  • Via the Internet, the information infrastructure of modern health care has already established medical information systems to share electronic health records among patients and health care providers. Data hiding plays an important role to protect medical images. Because modern medical devices have improved, high resolutions of medical images are provided to detect early diseases. The high quality medical images are used to recognize complicated anatomical structures such as soft tissues, muscles, and internal organs to support diagnosis of diseases. For instance, 16-bit depth medical images will provide 65,536 discrete levels to show more details of anatomical structures. In general, the feature of low utilization rate of intensity in 16-bit depth will be utilized to handle overflow/underflow problem. Nowadays, most of data hiding algorithms are still experimenting on 8-bit depth medical images. We proposed a novel reversible data hiding scheme testing on 16-bit depth CT and MRI medical image. And the peak point and zero point of a histogram are applied to embed secret message k bits without salt-and-pepper.

  • During the medical data transmissions, the protection of the patient information is vital. Hence this work proposes a spatial domain watermarking algorithm that enhances the data payload (capacity) while maintaining the authentication and data hiding. The code is distributed at every pixel of the digital image and not only in the regions of non-interest pixels. But the image details are still preserved. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using several performance measures such as the mean square error (MSE), the mean absolute error (MAE), and the peak signal to noise Ratio (PSNR), the universal image quality index (UIQI) and the structural similarity index (SSIM).

  • This paper presents an x-ray medical image panorama system which can overcome the smallness of the images that exist on a source computer during remote medical processing. In the system, after the standard medical image format DICOM is converted to the PC standard image format, a MSR algorithm is used to enhance X-ray images of low quality. Then SURF and Multi-band blending are applied to generate a panoramic image. Also, this paper evaluates the proposed SURF based system through the average gray value error and image quality criterion with X-ray image data by comparing with a SIFT based system. The results show that the proposed system is superior to SIFT based system in image quality.

  • Partial volume averaging effect of PET data influences on the accuracy of quantitative measurements of regional brain metabolism because spatial resolution of PET is limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of partial volume correction carried out on $^{18}$ F-PET images using Hoffman brain phantom. $^{18}$ F-PET Hoffman phantom images were co-registered to MR slices of the same phantom. All the MR slices of the phantom were then segmented to be binary images. Each of these binary images was convolved in 2 dimensions with the spatial resolution of the PET. The original PET images were then divided by the smoothed binary images in slice-by-slice, voxel-by-voxel basis resulting in larger PET image volume in size. This enlarged partial volume corrected PET image volume was multiplied by original binary image volume to exclude extracortical region. The evaluation of partial volume corrected PET image volume was performed by region of interests (ROI) analysis applying ROIs, which were drawn on cortical regions of the original MR image slices, to corrected and original PET image volume. From the ROI analysis, range of regional mean values increases of partial volume corrected PET images was 4 to 14%, and average increase for all the ROIs was about 10% in this phantom study. Hoffman brain phantom study was useful for the objective evaluation of the partial volume correction method. This MR-based correction method would be applicable to patients in the. quantitative analysis of FDG-PET studies.
