The Development and Performance Evaluation of the Air-preheating Heat Exchanger for Ultra-high Temperature Applications (초고온융 공기예열식 열교환기의 개발 및 성능 평가)

  • A compact air-preheating type heat exchanger was developed and tested for the ultra-high temperature heat recovery applications. For the direct use of exhaust gases up to $1200^{\circ}C$, the heat exchanger adopted a ceramic core with high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient less than $1{\times}10^{-6}^{\circ}C^{-1}$. The ceramic core was fabricated by special extrusion and bonding techniques. To minimize thermal stresses in the core, spring-loaded sealing mechanism was designed and successfully installed. 1-pass air flow scheme was adopted for the compactness and cost-savings. The pressure test for the ceramic core showed no failure under 35 kPa and less than 3% leak under 7 kPa. Flue gas simulation system was developed to investigate the performance of the heat exchanger. The test results showed normal operations of the heat exchanger up to $1200^{\circ}C$ of exhaust gases and relatively high heat recovery efficiencies of 31~39% depending upon exhaust gas temperatures..

  • The realization by many industrial countries that manufacturing is a critical ingredient for attaining economic strength and stability has led to the development of automated systems which were proviously considered as gimmicks. The adaptive skill of the human operator is now being simulated and reproduced by computer that have become more powerful and less expensive. The work presented in this paper forms an investigation of the effects of dynamic viscosity and load of hydraulic oil an pressures with three different circuit(meter-in, meter-out and bleed off). The experimental results showed that pressures increase with an increase in dynamic viscosity and load in bleed off circuit, but there is no variation of pressure in meter-In meter-out circuit.

  • Contents 1We developed a new type of lower part of the human-sized BWR (biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch Joints and one roll joint. In all, a 8 degree-of-freedom robot was developed. A new type of actuator for the robot is proposed, which is composed of four bar link mechanism driven by the ball screw.   • Super-plastic deformation that originates from transformation plasticity has favorable aspects for steels with improved strength and ductility. However, it also causes undesirable deformation of products or specimens, leading to their degradation. This article reviews recent investigations of transformation plasticity. A combination of newly suggested models, numerical analyses, and novel experiments has attempted to reveal the mechanism. Since the nature of the transformation plasticity is still unclear, there are significant challenges still to be solved. Fundamental understanding of transformation plasticity will be essential for the development of advanced steels.

A model of roof-top surface pressures produced by conical vortices : Model development

  • The objective of this study is to understand the flow above the front edge of low-rise building roofs. The greatest suction on the building is known to occur at this location as a result of the formation of conical vortices in the separated flow zone. It is expected that the relationship between this suction and upstream flow conditions can be better understood through the analysis of the vortex flow mechanism. Experimental measurements were used, along with predictions from numerical simulations of delta wing vortex flows, to develop a model of the pressure field within and beneath the conical vortex. The model accounts for the change in vortex suction with wind angle, and includes a parameter indicating the strength of the vortex. The model can be applied to both mean and time dependent surface pressures, and is validated in a companion paper.

Pathophysiology of orthostatic tremor: a multiple case study (길입성 진전의 병태생리: 다증 증례 연구)

  • Introduction : Orthostatic tremor develops in the legs while standing up with no weakness, pain or imbalance in the leg and the tremor is characteristically not observed when walking. However there have been some confusions about orthostatic tremor in several aspects. For the past ten years, we have observed 4 patients with orthostatic tremor. In each case tests were performed to investigate the following three important areas of inquiry about orthostatic tremor. Firstly, whether this disorder is an independent diagnostic entity or a variant of essential tremor. Secondly, whether the progress of this disorder is specifically related with standing posture. Lastly, the nature of the pathophysiologic mechanism behind the appearance of the tremor when standing after the lapse of a certain latent period and its disappearance upon the commencement of walking. Methods : Our 4 cases of orthostatic tremor were studied clinically, electrophysiologically, and pharmacologically. Electrophysiological tests included tremor spectrum test and electromyography. Results : We observed the presence of this tremor in several other tonic postures, as well as its absence, in a vertically lifted position from all our cases. Our cases registered a variable tremor frequency between 5 and 12 Hz according to the tremor spectrum test and EMG. Furthermore all our 4 cases demonstrated patterns of both synchronous EMG activity and alternating EMG activity at various times in homologous muscles of both legs. Orthostatic tremor was improved significantly with propranolol as well as clonazepam. Conclusions : From the results of our study we drew the following conclusions. It is probable that orthostatic tremor is simply a variant of essential tremor rather than being an independent diagnostic entity and that in most cases its development is specifically related with muscle contraction rather than merely with the act of standing. Furthermore we discovered a clue in the previously described neural control mechanism that the nuclear bag fibers in the muscle spindle have lag time of several seconds in their response to muscle strength and that their baseline does not reset fully in rapidly moving muscle. This neural control mechanism could offer sufficient explanation for the phenomena of tremor appearance when standing and disappearance when walking in orthostatic tremor.

Viscoelastic behavior of aqueous surfactant micellar solutions

  • A cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium $\rho$-toluenesufonate (CTA$\rho$TS), forms long threadlike micelles in aqueous solution. The threadlike micelles make concentrated entanglement networks, so that the solution shows pronounced viscoelastic behavior as concentrated polymer systems do. However, a mechanism for a process responsible for the longest relaxation time of the threadlike micellar system is different from that of semi-dilute to concentrated polymer systems. The threadlike micellar system exhibits unique viscoelasticity described by a Maxwell model. The longest relaxation time of the threadlike micellar system is not a function of the concentration of CTA$\rho$TS, but changes with that of $\rho$-toluenesufonate ($\rho$$TS^{-}$) ions in the bulk aqueous phase supplied by adding sodium $\rho$-toluenesulfonate (NapTS). The rates of molecular motions in the threadlike micelles are not influenced by the concentration of $\rho$$TS^{-}$ anions, therefore, molecular motions in the threadlike micelles (micro-dynamics) are independent of the longest relaxation mechanism (macro-dynamics). A nonionic surfactant, oleyldimethylamineoxide (ODAO), forms long threadlike micelles in aqueous solution without any additives. The aqueous threadlike micellar system of ODAO also shows Maxwell type viscoelastic behavior. However, the relaxation mechanism for the longest relaxation process in the system should be different from that in the threadlike micellar systems of CTA$\rho$TS, since the system of ODAO does not contain additive anions. Because increase in the average degree of protonation of head groups of ODAO molecules in micelles due to adding hydrogen bromide causes the relaxation time remarkably longer, changes in micro-structure and micro-dynamics in the threadlike micelle are closely related to macro-dynamics in contrast with the threadlike micellar system of CTA$\rho$TS.

  • The document archives like official documents, books, maps and historic paper artifacts are primarily based on the organic cellulosic materials. As the passage of time, these organic cellulosic materials are slowly deteriorated by various aging factors, like light, polluted air and biological fungi. Many researchers have been carried out the examination method of deteriorating origins, the mechanism of aging hysteresis, and the preserving method of archival materials. One of the most simple and easiest ways for conservation of organic archival documents is the proper storage under environmental control. Corrugated board for archival quality container has been developed and already used in advanced country, like Japan, USA, German, UK and Europe. In case of Korea, corrugated board for archival quality container has been used a decade ago, but totally imported. This study was tried to develop the corrugated board for archival quality container. Liner and corrugated medium were specially produced and finally manufactured to E flute corrugated board. The physical and strength properties of permanent base paper and corrugated board were evaluated, and compared with imported corrugated board. 4 kinds of corrugating adhesives were considered various in order to investigate optimum adhesive for flute development between liner and corrugating medium, and evaluate adhesion strength under conditions of storage and curing temperatures.

A Study on the Micro-mechanical Characteristics of Titanium Metal Matrix Composites (티타늄 금속기 복합재료의 미시-기계적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Vacuum hot pressing has been used for the development of titanium metal matrix composites using foil-fiber-foil technique. Subsequent micro-mechanical characteristics of the composites are then investigated by means of several experimental methods. The levels of consolidation, together with mechanism based failure processes of the materials have been analyzed by employing a thermo-acoustic emission technique. As shown by the results, fiber strength degradation occurs during the consolidation, and particularly residual stresses results from the thermal expansion mismatch between fiber and matrix materials during cooling process are incorporated in the changes of mechanical properties of the finished products. In industrial applications, both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the material-mechanical characteristics are particularly important, and therefore must be included in process development. The present paper represents a methodology by which this can be achieved.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in reducing greenhouse gases in all industrial fields. In the construction industry, studies have been conducted for the use of high-volume fly ash concrete to replace cement with fly ash. Quantitative measurements of cement hydration and fly ash reactivity enable a clear understanding of the strength development mechanism of high-volume fly ash concrete. It is very difficult to describe the reactivity in a simple way because the hydration and pozzolanic reactions of cement paste containing fly ash are very complex and the composition of the hydration product cannot be accurately determined. This study investigated the hydration and mechanical properties of high volume fly ash (HVFA) cement according to the substitution rate of fly ash (FA). The hydration degree of cement and the reactivity of FA were evaluated through the selective dissolution method and the non-evaporable water content of the paste according to age. In addition, compressive strength was measured using HVFA mortar specimens according to age. As a result of the experiment, as the substitution rate of fly ash increased, the hydration degree of cement increased, but the reactivity of FA decreased.
