  • Mechanical seals are one of main components of high speed centrifugal pumps. So, it is very important to detect the faults (scratch, notch, indentation, wear) of mechanical seals since the damage of seal can cause a critical failures or accidents of machinery system. In the past, many researchers mainly performed to detect the seal fault using the time signals measured from sensors. Recently, studies are focused on the development of on-line real time monitoring system. But study on the feature parameters used for fault detection of mechanical seals has a little been performed. In this paper, we showed feature parameters extracted from accelerated and acoustic signals by using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), alpha coefficient, statistical parameters. And also verified the possibility for fault detection of mechanical seal.

  • This study suggests a simple, convenient and non-destructive method for investigation of the Young's modulus detection in stepped shafts which only utilizes the first-order resonant frequency in flexural mode and dimensions of structures. The method is based on the impulse excitation technique (IET) to pick up the fundamental resonant frequencies. The standard Young's modulus detection formulas for rectangular and circular cross-sections are well investigated in literatures. However, the Young's modulus of stepped shafts can not be directly detected using the formula for a beam with rectangular or circular cross-section. A response surface method (RSM) is introduced to design numerical simulation experiments to build up experimental formula to detect Young's modulus of stepped shafts. The numerical simulation performed by finite element method (FEM) to obtain enough simulation data for RSM analysis. After analysis and calculation, the relationship of flexural resonant frequencies, dimensions of stepped shafts and Young's modulus is obtained. Numerical simulations and experimental investigations show that the IET method can be used to investigate Young's modulus in stepped shafts, and the FEM simulation and RSM based IET formula proposed in this paper is applicable to calculate the Young's modulus in stepped shaft. The method can be further developed to detect mechanical parameters of more complicated structures using the combination of FEM simulation and RSM.

  • Defect detection is one of the key factors in fabric quality control. To improve the speed and accuracy of denim fabric defect detection, this paper proposes a defect detection algorithm based on cascading feature extraction architecture. Firstly, this paper extracts these weight parameters of the pre-trained VGG16 model on the large dataset ImageNet and uses its portability to train the defect detection classifier and the defect recognition classifier respectively. Secondly, retraining and adjusting partial weight parameters of the convolution layer were retrained and adjusted from of these two training models on the high-definition fabric defect dataset. The last step is merging these two models to get the defect detection algorithm based on cascading architecture. Then there are two comparative experiments between this improved defect detection algorithm and other feature extraction methods, such as VGG16, ResNet-50, and Xception. The results of experiments show that the defect detection accuracy of this defect detection algorithm can reach 94.3% and the speed is also increased by 1-3 percentage points.

  • The sensitivity-based finite element model updating method has received increasing attention in damage detection of structures based on measured modal parameters. Finding an optimization technique with high efficiency and fast convergence is one of the key issues for model updating-based damage detection. A new simple and computationally efficient optimization algorithm is proposed and applied to damage detection by using finite element model updating. The proposed method combines the Gauss-Newton method with region truncation of each iterative step, in which not only the constraints are introduced instead of penalty functions, but also the searching steps are restricted in a controlled region. The developed algorithm is illustrated by a numerically simulated 25-bar truss structure, and the results have been compared and verified with those obtained from the trust region method. In order to investigate the reliability of the proposed method in damage detection of structures, the influence of the uncertainties coming from measured modal parameters on the statistical characteristics of detection result is investigated by Monte-Carlo simulation, and the probability of damage detection is estimated using the probabilistic method.

  • The grinding process has been mainly used fur finishing metal products as final machining stage. But chatter vibration and bum of a workpiece have a bad effect on the machined surface and should be detected in modern grinding process. This paper deals with a fault detection of the cylindrical plunge grinding process by power parameters. During the grinding process the power signals of an induced motor were sampled and used to determine the relationship between fault and change of power parameters. A neural network was used far detecting the grinding fault and an influence of power parameters to the grinding fault was analyzed.

  • In this study, the image processing program for deducing parameters of the elliptic shape of the partially overlapped liquid droplets was developed using the randomized Hough transform and the parameter decomposition. The procedure for the shape detection consists of three steps. For the first step, the candidate centers of ellipses are determined by the geometric property of the ellipse. Next, the rest parameters are estimated by the randomized Hough transform. In the final step for the post-processing, optimally approximated parameters of ellipses are determined. The developed program was applied to the simulated overlapped ellipses, real overlapped droplets, and real spray droplets. The shape detection was very excellent unless there existed inherent problems in original images. Moreover, this method can be used as an effective separating method for the overlapped small particles.

  • The focus of this study is the development of a credible fault detection system of the cylindrical plunge grinding process. The acoustic emission (AE) signals generated during machining were analyzed to determine the relationship between grinding-related faults and characteristics of changes in signals. Furthermore, a neural network, which has excellent ability in pattern classification, was applied to the diagnosis system. The neural network was optimized with a momentum coefficient, a learning rate, and a structure of the hidden layer in the iterative learning process. The success rates of fault detection were verified.

  • In this paper, an inverse approach based on uniform load surface (ULS) is presented for structural damage localization and quantification. The ULS is excellent approximation for deformed configuration of a structure under distributed unit force applied on all degrees of freedom. The ULS make use of natural frequencies and mode shapes of structure and in mathematical point of view is a weighted average of mode shapes. An objective function presented to damage detection is discrepancy between the ULS of monitored structure and numerical model of structure. Solving this objective function to find minimum value yields damage's parameters detection. The teaching-learning based optimization algorithm has been employed to solve inverse problem. The efficiency of present damage detection method is demonstrated through three numerical examples. By comparison between proposed objective function and another objective function which make use of natural frequencies and mode shapes, it is revealed present objective function have faster convergence and is more sensitive to damage. The method has good robustness against measurement noise and could detect damage by using the first few mode shapes. The results indicate that the proposed method is reliable technique to damage detection in structures.

  • This paper presents a method of detecting localized defects on tapered roller bearing in main spindle of machine tool system. The statistical parameters in time-domain processing technique have been calculated to extract useful features from bearing vibration signals. These features are used by the input feature of an artificial neural network to detect and diagnose bearing defects. As a results, the detection of bearing defect conditions could be successfully performed by using an artificial neural network with statistical parameters of acceleration signals.
