  • Sphere anemometry technique is re-visited for low gas velocity measurements during full-scale fire tests. This technique has the advantage of requiring only one channel per sphere for data acquisition, in addition to being cheap and rugged, The results indicate that the technique is useful for small fuel load burns with low radiation levels. For large fuel loads, the usefulness is up to sprinkler activation temperatures.

Thermo mechanical analysis of a ceramic coated piston used in a diesel engine

  • The aim of this paper is to determine temperature and stress distributions in a ceramic based on Partially Stabilized Zirconia coated steel piston crown by using plasma spraying for improving performance of a marine diesel engine. Effects of coating constituent and thickness on temperature and stress distributions were investigated including comparisons with results from an uncoated piston by means of finite element method namely ANSYS. Temperature developed at the coated surface is significantly higher than that of the uncoated piston. The maximum stress components occur between bond coat and adjacent ceramic layer. Provided that coating thickness is constant as 0.5 mm, when numbers of layers increase, magnitude of the normal stress decrease about 34.1% on the base metal surface according to uncoated piston, but the base metal surface temperature of the steel piston increase about 13.1%.

  • The electric power, regenerated while railway vehicles braking or running downhill, makes U line voltage rise and the feeding system may not be secure. In order to keep away from these kind of insecurity, the regenerative energy should be consumed by loads or transmitted to the AC side via certain devices such as DC/AC converters. This paper introduces the developed regenerative inverter for electric railway.

  • The existence of grooves on the surface of bond coat has significant effect on the instability of thermal barrier system. In this work, the thermal-mechanical fatigue experiments were performed under various thermal and mechanical loads for FeCralloy specimens with and without yttrium dopant to observe the deformation of surface grooves. The effect of temperature, fatigue load and the ratio of curvature on the deformation of grooves were investigated. As the results, it has been found that the higher load level and the higher curvature ratio induces the larger deformation near the grooves. However, the addition of yittrium dopant induces the adverse results.

  • Mechanical buckling of a rectangular functionally graded plate is obtained in the current paper using a refined higher-order shear and normal deformation theory. The impact of transverse normal strain is considered. The material properties are microscopically inhomogeneous and vary continuously based on a power law form in spatial direction. Navier's procedure is applied to examine the mechanical buckling behavior of a simply supported FG plate. The mechanical critical buckling subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression loads are determined. The numerical investigation are compared with the numerical results in the literature. The influences of geometric parameters, power law index and different loading conditions on the critical buckling are studied.

  • One of the most significant problems in the processing of composite materials is residual stress. The high residual stress may cause cracking in the matrix without external loads and degrade the integrity of composite structures. In this study, thermo-viscoelastic residual stresses occurred in an aluminum liner-inserted polymer composite cylinder are investigated. This type of the structure is used for rocket fuselage due to the convenience to attach payloads and equipment to the metal liner by machining. The time and degree of cure dependent thermo-viscoelastic constitutive equations are developed and coupled with a thermo-chemical process model. These equations are solved with the finite element method to predict the residual stresses in the composite cylinder and also in the interface between the liner and the composite during cure.

Axial Impact Collapse Analysis of Spot Welded Hat Shaped Section Members

  • The widely used spot welded sections of automobiles(hat and double hat shaped section members) absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. The sections were tested with respect to axial static(10mm/min) and quasi-static(1000mm/min) loads. Based on these test results, specimens with various thicknesses, width ratios and spot weld pitches on the flange were tested at high impact velocity(7.19m/sec and 7.94m/sec) which simulates an actual car crash. Characteristics of collapse have been reviewed and structures for optimal energy absorbing capacity is suggested.

Stress and Fracture Analyses of Nuclear Power Plant LP Turbine Rotor Discs

  • Fracture phenomenon has been reported on blades, rotors, connections and rotor discs of LP turbines of nuclear power plants, which is caused by fatigue, stress corrosion and erosion. In this study, as a tool of reliability evaluation, a number of stress and fracture analyses were performed on the defected area under various operating conditions using the finite element method. Possible defects on key-way and rotor disc were assumed to be two-dimensional cracks and centrifugal force, temperature distribution and shrink-fit effect were included as external loads. From stress analysis results, stress intensity factors were obtained and these values can be utilized to evaluate reliability and predict remaining lifetime of the turbine discs.

Hydrodynamic response of alternative floating substructures for spar-type offshore wind turbines

  • Hydrodynamic analyses of classic and truss spar platforms for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) were performed in the frequency domain, by considering coupling effects of the structure and its mooring system. Based on the Morison equation and Diffraction theory, different wave loads over various frequency ranges and underlying hydrodynamic equations were calculated. Then, Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs) of 6 DOF motions were obtained through the coupled hydrodynamic frequency domain analysis of classic and truss spar-type FOWTs. Truss spar platform had better heave motion performance and less weight than classic spar, while the hydrostatic stability did not show much difference between the two spar platforms.

  • Residual stresses, which can be produced during the welding process, play an important role in an industrial field. Welding residual stresses are exerting negative effect on the fatigue behavior and integrity of structure. In this study, as a result of the thermal elasto-plastic finite element analysis for the welds of a nuclear component, the residual stress distributions are estimated for as-welded condition. Also, finite element techniques are developed to simulate the relaxation of the residual stresses according to the various mechanical stress relieving(MSR) loads such as hydrostatic pressure loading, tensile pipe-end loading, and mechanical stress improvement process(MSIP) loading. Finally, the results of residual stress redistributions for various loading conditions are compared and reviewed qualitatively and quantitatively to find an optimum loading condition.
