  • Non-pneumatic wheels have been widely used instead of general tube type wheels beause of many reasons, for example, wheel size, price restriction, heavy-duty problem and so on. Almost small size wheels or casters were non-pneumatic type but structural stability was not certified. This paper presents a double structured non-pneumatic wheel, called "smart caster", which consisted with inner and outer wheels connected by chips, and finite element analysis processes were conducted in order to determine important dwsign factors before actual design for mass production. For structural analysis ABAQUS was used under various boundary conditions with incrementally varied loads until 2,000N. Then structural staility was evaluated according to varied loads below ultimate stress. Generally stresses were concentrated at the lower parts of the wheel, and especially contact parts between wheel and ground. In addition, maximum stress appeared at contact parts between the wheel lower part and chips.

  • Recently, regulations on fuel efficiency and $CO_2$ emissions have been reinforced in automobile industries. As a result, many companies make an effort to satisfy these regulations by adapting composite materials to the automobile body as well as its components. In particular, the lower control arm in the suspension system is subjected to heavy loads and is designed to be thick to meet operating loads. Therefore, it is essential for the lower control arm to reduce weight and to secure the durability assessment. In this paper, we conducted structural analysis by performing stress and stiffness analysis under given load conditions through finite element analysis, and verified whether it satisfies the load and stiffness conditions. The inertia relief method is adapted to the process of analysis, and the principal stress is used as a criterion for evaluation. Based on these results, the durability assessment is carried out using the stress-life method.

  • Rubber, a hyperelastic material, is the main material used in tires. During the operation of a car, the tire receives various types of loads. The accumulation of strain energy due to such loads induces tire failure. Generally, because rubber materials used for tires have stress softening characteristics, unlike metals, test methods used for metals cannot be applied to rubber. Therefore, in this study, for the evaluation of the fatigue properties of two types of specimens that have different material components, a tensile test and a fatigue test according to the extended strain range dissimilar to ASTM D4482 are performed, and fatigue life equations are proposed based on the test results.

  • The drive shaft of passenger vehicle has an important role in transmitting the torque between the power train system and the wheels. Torsional fatigue failures occur generally in the connection parts of the spline edge of the drive shaft, when there is significant fatigue damage under repeated twisting loads. A heat treatment, an induction hardening process, has been adopted to increase the torsional strength as well as the fatigue life of the drive shaft. However, it is still unclear how the extension of the induction hardening process in a used material relates to its shear-strain fatigue life range. In this study, a shear-strain controlled torsional-fatigue test with a specially designed specimen was conducted by an electro-dynamic torsional fatigue test machine. A finite element analysis of the drive shaft was carried out using the results obtained by the fatigue experiment. The estimated fatigue life was verified through a twisting load test of the real drive shaft in a test rig.

  • Ball Grid Array (BGA) is a widely used package type due to its high pin density and good heat dissipation. In BGA, solder balls play an important role in electrically connecting the package to the PCB. Therefore, understanding the inelastic deformation of solder balls under various mechanical loads is essential for the robust design of semiconductor packages. In this study, the geometrical effect on the inelastic deformation and fracture of solder balls were analyzed by finite element analysis. The results showed that fracture occurred in both tilted and hourglass shapes under shear loading, and no fracture occurred in all cases under compressive loading. However, when bending was applied, only the tilted shape failed. When shear and bending loads were combined with compression, the stress triaxiality was maintained at a value less than zero and failure was suppressed. Furthermore, a comparison using the Lagrangian-Green strain tensor of the critical element showed that even under the same loading conditions, there was a significant difference in deformation depending on the shape of the solder ball.

  • The stress field in a body caused by the tangential loading of a rectangular patch on a semi-infinite solid has been solved analytically using a potential function. The validity of the results of this study was preyed by Saint-Venant's principle in the remote region and by the superposition of point loads in the vicinity of the surface.

  • The change of flow stress due to dynamic recrystallization during hot forming process is investigated. A series of mechanical tests has been conducted at various temperatures, and constitutive relations and recrystallization kinetics were formulated from the test results. The effect of dynamic recrystallization to the flow stress was implemented to a commercial FEM code by conditioned remapping of state variables. The datum strain of stress compensation was optimized to minimize the overestimation of forming loads. Suggested datum was formulated as an exclusive function of critical strain for recrystallizalion and validated by mechanical tests and microstructural observations.

  • Present study interests with the longitudinal forced vibration of nanorods. The nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen is used in modeling of nanorods. Uniform, linear and sinusoidal axial loads are considered. Dynamic displacements are obtained for nanorods with different geometrical properties, boundary conditions and nonlocal parameters. The nonlocal effect increases dynamic displacement and frequency when compared with local elasticity theory. Present results can be useful for modeling of the axial nanomotors and nanoelectromechanical systems.
