Fatigue life enhancement of defective structures by bonded repairs

  • Defective metallic components and structures are being repaired with bonded composite patches to improve overall mechanical and fatigue properties. In this study, fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on pre-cracked 7075/T6 Aluminum substrates with and without bonded Boron/epoxy patches. A considerable increase in the fatigue life and a decrease in the stress intensity factor (SIF) were observed as the number of patch plies increased. The experimental results demonstrate that the patch configurations and patch thickness can enhance fatigue life by order of magnitude. Quantitative comparisons between analytical and experimental data were made, and the analytical model based on a modified Rose's analytical solution appears to best estimate the fatigue life.

  • A Rubber mount is widely used for mechanical parts or engineering materials. Especially, it plays an important role in reducing mechanical vibration due to cyclic loading. But, rubber mount is damaged due to the cyclic loading and resonance. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate evaluation of fatigue life considering vibration characteristics for rubber. In this study, a vibration fatigue analysis was performed and based on Power Spectral Density(PSD) and the stress-life curve and a result of frequency response analysis in the finite element method. The measured load history in experiment was transformed to PSD curve. The stress-life curve was obtained by nonlinear static analysis and fatigue test. In addition, frequency response analysis was conducted for mechanical part. In order to evaluate fatigue life of rubber mount, vibration fatigue test was conducted at the constant acceleration-level as well. Fatigue life was determined when the load capacity is reduced to 60% of its initial value. As a result, predicted fatigue life of rubber mount agreed fairly well with the experimental fatigue life.

  • Piston assemblies, which are key components of hydraulic high pressure pumps & motors, are major failure products operating at high pressure and high speed, and the main failure mode is wearout of the shoe surface. To predict the actual life of piston assemblies. we require to find out the most sensitive parameters and establish related empirical formula. In this study, we analyzed the life of piston and shoe assemblies in accordance with variation of speed, pressure, and temperature to reduce the life test time, then analyzed the result of combined accelerated life test which is applied by high speed, speed pressure, and high temperature simultaneously, and finally developed combined accelerated life test model.

베이지안 접근법을 이용한 스프링 피로 수명 파라미터의 역 추정 (Inverse Estimation of Fatigue Life Parameters of Springs Based on the Bayesian Approach)

  • 본 연구에서는 현장의 축적된 피로 수명 시험 데이터를 바탕으로 유한요소해석(Finite Element Analysis)을 이용하여 스프링의 피로 수명 파라미터를 역 추정(Inverse Estimation)하는 연구를 수행하였다. 베이지안 접근법(Bayesian Approach)을 이용하여 불확실성 피로 수명 파라미터의 사후분포(Posterior distribution)를 구하였고, 마코프체인몬테카를로(Markov Chain Monte Carlo) 기법을 이용하여 역 추정된 파라미터의 샘플 데이터를 생성하였다. 얻어진 샘플링 데이터를 기반으로 피로 수명을 예측한 결과 신뢰 수준 내에서 실제 수명 시험 결과가 예측한 범위 내에 잘 포함되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Rubber parts are widely used in many applications such as dampers, shock absorbers, and seals used in railway and automotive industries. Much research has thus far been conducted on property estimation and life prediction of rubber parts. To predict the service life of rubber parts at room temperature, most prior work adopts the well-known Arrhenius model that needs the accelerated life test in high-temperature conditions. However, they may not reflect the actual conditions of use that rubber parts are usually used under a specific strain condition during long period of time. In this context, we propose a method for the life prediction of rubber parts in actual conditions of use. The proposed method is based on the accelerated life test using stress relaxation during which three relatively high elongation percentages (100%, 200%, and 300%) are applied to the rubber specimens. Rubber specimens were prepared in accordance with KS M 6518 standard and three stress relaxation testers were fabricated for actual experiments. Finally, a inverse power model for life prediction was derived from experimental results. The predicted life was compared with the actual test life for validation.

Cutting Performance of Si$_3$N$_4$ Based SiC Ceramic Cutting Tools

  • Composites of Si$_3$N$_4$-SiC containing up to 30 wt% of dispersed SiC particles were fabricated via hot-pressing with an oxynitride glass. To determine the effect of sintering time and SiC content on the mechanical properties and the cutting performance, the composites with fixed 8hr-sintering time and 20 wt% SiC content were fabricated and tested. Fracture toughness of the composites increased with increasing sintering time, while the hardness increased as the SiC content increased up to 20 wt%. The hardness of the composites was relatively independent of the grain size and the sintered density. For machining heat-treated AISI4140, the insert with 20 wt% SiC sintered for 8hr showed the longest tool life while the insert with 20 wt% SiC sintered for 12hr showed the longest tool life for machining gray cast iron. An effort was made to relate the mechanical properties, such as hardness, fracture toughness and wear resistance coefficient with the tool life. However, no apparent relationship was found between them. It may be stated that tool life is affected by not only the mechanical properties but also other properties such as surface roughness, density, grian size and the number of the inherent defects in the inserts.

Mechanical Properties of Woodceramics According to Carbonizing Temperature - Bending, Compression and Hardness -

  • This paper reports the mechanical properties of bending, compression and hardness of woodceramics manufactured at different carbonizing temperatures (600℃, 800℃, 1000℃, 1200℃ and 1500℃) in a vacuum sintering furnace using sawdust boards of Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaemferi. The highest values of bending MOR (MORb) were 104 kgf/cm2 (1200℃), 91 kgf/cm2 (1500℃) and 86 kgf/cm2 (1500℃), the highest values of compression strength were 152 kgf/cm2(1200℃)), 160 kgf/cm2(1000℃) and 189 kgf/cm2(1000℃), the highest values of hardness were 2.00 kgf/mm2(800℃), 2.01 kgf/mm2 (1200℃) and 2.28 kgf/mm2 (1000℃) in P. densifora, L. kaemferi and P. koraiensis, respectively. The carbonizing temperature of 600℃ was not proper to the mechanical properties for three kinds of sawdust boards and the highest values of mechanical properties were different from the kinds of mechanical properties and species of sawdust boards. Therefore, it is necessary to manufacture woodceramics at a proper temperature for particular species of sawdust boards to obtain good mechanical properties.

스퍼기어의 피팅 수명 예측 및 실험 (Experiments and Prediction of Pitting Life in Spur Gears)

  • The objective of this paper is to predict pitting initiation by using a contact analysis and subsurface stress. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions. Subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. It is used Mesoscopic multiaxial fatigue criterion to predict contact fatigue life. It is important to predict pitting initiation to enhance reliability of the mechanical elements. Pitting life prediction in the spur gears which are fundamental mechanical element is presented in this paper.

  • This study is aimed to predict the fatigue life for pitch bearings under combined radial, thrust load and moment. In order to do this, a series of simulation such as bearing load distribution, initial surface stress, subsurface stress and fatigue analysis is needd. Fatigue life for pitch bearing can be predicted by using a bearing's material fatigue property.

  • Electro-Mechanical Actuator installed on the aircraft plays a key role in an aircraft's flight control through flight control computer. Reliable prediction of the actuator is important for the aircraft. To estimate the lifetime of a product, it is necessary to test full target life. However, it is very difficult to perform it due to the long life time of actuator but short period of development time with increasing cost. Therefore, accelerated life test has been used to reduce the test time for various reasons such as reducing product's development cycle and cost. In this paper, to predict the lifetime of the actuator, we analyzed the flight profile of aircraft and adapted the method of accelerated life test in order to accelerate failure modes that might occur under user conditions. We also set up an endurance test equipment for validating the demanded lifetime of an actuator and performed accelerated life test.
