  • The mechanical behaviors and chloride resistance performance of fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) with hybrid polyethylene (PE) and steel fiber (in total 2% by volume) were investigated. Based on micro-mechanics and fracture mechanics, the reason why the tensile strain capacity of FRCC changed obviously was obtained. Besides, the effects of the total surface area of fiber in FRCC on compressive strength and chloride content were clarified. It is found that the improvement of the tensile strain capacity of FRCC with hybrid fiber is attributed to the growth of strain-hardening performance index (the ratio of complementary energy to crack tip toughness). As the total surface area of fiber related with the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between fiber and matrix increases, compressive strength decreases obviously. Since the total surface area of fiber is small, the chloride resistance performance of FRCC with hybrid PE and steel fiber is better than that of FRCC containing only PE fiber.

  • The cure and physical properties of EPDM foam containing ground rubber and carbon black as filler were studied. The cure time reduced with the addition of filler. This result means reducing the operation time. In case of ground rubber was used, blowing ratio, tensile strength, and elongation were decreased rapidly at above 30 phr. On the other hand, in case of carbon black, they showed similar physical properties until 70 phr was used limited to 30 phr to make a good foam, which should be due to low interfacial interaction between EPDM and ground rubber. All the EPDM foams showed excellent thermal stability.

  • Titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced Inconel 718 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated 55 vol% TiC-Inconel 718 composite are analyzed. The composite exhibits superior mechanical properties, such as hardness and compressive strength as compared with Inconel 718. It is believed that Mo and Nb, which are alloying elements in the matrix, diffuse and solidify into the TiC reinforcement, resulting in generation of core-rim structure with excellent interfacial properties.

  • Boron nitride nanotubes and carbon nanotubes are the most representative one-dimensional nanostructures, and have received great attention as reinforcement for multifunctional composites for their excellent physical properties. The two nanotubes have similar excellent mechanical stiffness, strength, and heat conduction properties. Therefore, the reinforcing effect of these two nanotubes is greatly influenced by the properties of their interface with the polymer matrix. In this paper, recent comparative studies on the reinforcing effect of boron nitride nanotubes and carbon nanotubes through experimental pull-out test and in-silico simulation are summarized. In addition, the conflicting aspect of the two different nanotubes with structural defects in their side wall is discussed on the viscoelastic damping performance of nanocomposites.

  • The phase separation in Wood Flour-Polymer Composite (WPC) was investigated and the reasons for change in mechanical properties with the content of wood flour were explored. The wood flour-polypropylene composite samples with different wood flour contents were prepared. From differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms of WPC samples, the trend of crystallinity and melting temperature ($T_m$) were analyzed. The crystallinity and melting temperature increased and then decreased as the content of wood flour increased. From these results, it was confirmed that at the low wood flour content the wood flours were dispersed into the polypropylene matrix but at the high wood flour content, the phase separation between polymer and wood flour phases appeared. The tensile strength of WPC samples was continuously decreased with the increase of wood flour content. At a low wood flour content, the low interfacial bonding and the decrease in crystallinity were the main reasons for the decrease in tensile strength with the increase of wood flour content. At a high wood flour content, the decrease in tensile strength resulted from the interfacial defects between the polymer and wood flour phases. The impact strength of the WPC sample showed the maximum behavior with the content of wood flour. At a low wood flour content, the impact strength was enhanced owing to the decrease in brittleness, which results from the decrease in crystallinity. At a high wood flour content, however, the impact strength decreased due to phase separation.

  • The mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforcing bars(rebar) in various environment conditions such as moisture, chloride, alkali and freeze-thaw actions at temperature ranging from room temperature($25^{\circ}C$) to high temperature of up to $80^{\circ}C$ have been studied. The test results indicated that tensile strength and interfacial shear strength of GFRP bar were decreased with the increasing of temperature and holding time of each environment condition. The degradation in alkali environment. was more serious than those in the other environments.

  • The SiCp/AC8A composites were fabricated by the pressureless metal infiltration process successfully. The effect of additional Mg, which were mixed with SiC particles to promote interfacial wetting between the reinforcement and matrix alloy, and particle size on the mechanical properties was investigated. By increasing the additional Mg content the hardness of SiCp/AC8A composites was increased due to the hard reaction products, but the bending strength was decreased by the excess reaction of Mg and high porosity level when the additional Mg content is over 7%. The Hardness and bending strength was increased by decreasing the size of SiC particle.

  • In this study, a novel Cu composite sheet with embedded high electric conduction path was developed as another alternative for the interconnect materials possessing high electrical conductivity as well as high strength. The Cu composite sheet was fabricated by forming Ag conduction paths not within the interior but on the surface of a high strength Cu substrate by damascene electroplating process. As a result, the electrical conductivity increased by 40% thanks to mesh type Ag conduction paths, while the ultimate tensile strength decreased by 20%. The interfacial fracture resistance of Cu composite sheet prepared by damascene electroplating increased by above 50 times compared to Cu composite sheet by conventional electroplating. For feasibility test for practical application, a leadframe for LED module was manufactured by a progressive blanking and piercing processes, and the blanked surface profile was evaluated as a function of the volume fraction of Ag conduction paths. As Ag conduction path became finer, pressing formability improved.

  • In order to suppress a repulsive interfacial energy between hydrophilic clay and hydrophobic polymer matrix in preparing a polymer/clay nanocomposite, a third component of amphiphilic nature such as poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) was introduced into the model system of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN)/Na-montmorillonite. Once $\varepsilon$-caprolactone was polymerized in the presence of Na-rnontmorillonite, the successful ring-opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone and the well-developed exfoliated structure of PCL/Na-montmorillonite mixture were confirmed, Thereafter, SAN was melt-mixed with PCL/Na-montmorillonite nanocomposite, which resulted in that SAN matrix and PCL fraction were completely miscible to form homogeneous mixture with retention of the exfoliated state of Na-montmorillonite, exhibiting that PCL effectively stabilizes the repulsive polymer/clay interface and contributes the improvement of mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.
