This study aims to develop a PZT-driven depth adjustment device with a flexure hinge and to investigate its static/dynamic characteristics. This device will be applied to rapidly and accurately trace a flat surface with slight waviness of up to several hundreds of micrometers in magnitude. One typical example is to cut a film coated on a steel plate. A depth control system composed of PMAC, PZT/PZT amplifier, flexure hinge/knife, and laser displacement sensor is implemented on a desktop three-axis machine and an actual cutting test is conducted on a steel workpiece with a sinusoidal-wavy surface. It is verified that the dynamic characteristics of the device limit the maximum cutting speed and depth precision.

A spindle unit is very important in machine tools. It has a direct effect on machining accuracy. The static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle unit should be considered in the initial design stage for manufacturing of precision product. This study describes an investigation for deriving design stability of a 20,000rpm heavy-cutting spindle for precision machining. Static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle, such as deformation, stress, natural frequency and mode shapes are analyzed using finite element analysis. The 20,000rpm heavy-cutting spindle is confirmed that it is successfully designed through finite element analysis.
The present paper is a contribution in characterising end milling process of AISI 52100 ball bearing steel through statistical analyses of variance (ANOVA). The latter has been performed to identify the effect of the cutting parameters on the machined surface roughness and the cutting tool life. Wear measurements have been carried on multilayer coated carbide inserts and the respective surface roughness has been recorded. Taguchi's technique has been adapted to conduct the design experiments in terms of orthogonal arrays according to the cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut), the type of coating (TiN, TiCN, TiAlN) and lubricating condition. Regression analyses have conducted to the development of simplified empirical models that can be effectively used to predict surface roughness and tool wear in the present milling process.

The technique of high speed machining is widely studied in machining fields, because the high efficiency and accuracy in machining can be obtained in high speed machining. Unfortunately the development of tool fur high speed machining in not close behind that of machine tool. In this study, 10 types flat endmill is prepared for obtaining data according to tool shape. Especially, we concentrated in helix angle, number of cutting edge and rake angle. Cutting condition is selected for several experiments and measuring cutting farce, tool life, tool wear and chip shape according to cutting length. 3-axis cutting farces are acquired from the tool dynamometer with high natural frequency, as the conventional tool dynamometer (9257B, Kistler) has cannot measure the state of high frequency force. Particularly, we found out that the axial cutting force waveform has a good relation with tool wear features. And flow is interrupted at the beginning of cutting by the decrease of rake angle. By above results. it is suggested the endmill tool with 45$^{\circ}$helix angle, 6 cutting edge and -15$^{\circ}$rake angle is suitable for high speed machining.

The cutting area changes periodically in the end-milling process because of its form generation mechanism. In this study, the effects of the cutting area on end-milled side walls are studied by developing a cutting area model that simulates the area formed by engagement between a workpiece and a cutting edge of the end mill. To do this, the straightness profile of the side wall in the axial direction is investigated. Models for estimating the cutting area and the transition point, where the slope of the straightness profile changes suddenly, are verified from real end-milling experiments under various radial and axial depth of cut conditions. Through this study, it is confirmed that the final end-milled side wall is generated in the regions where cutting areas are constant and decreasing in the down-cut. Similarly, in stable up-cut, it is also generated in the regions where cutting areas are increasing and constant. It is found that the transition point appears when the region changes.
In this study, an experiment was conducted to confirm the applicability of the external shape control of the ultrasonic knife to the CFRTP material, which is the base material of thermoplastic. TC910 based on polyamide6 (PA6) was used as the material. The slope 와 and tool transfer speed of the material and tool were selected as process factors for processing, and the following results were obtained. Under all cutting conditions using an ultrasonic knife, friction heat caused by high-frequency vibration was issued at 150℃ at the contact part between the material and the knife during cutting. As a result of the cutting force analysis, the faster the transfer speed, the higher the cutting force as the angle of entry of the blade increased, and the size of the cutting force changed during cutting. As for the size of the burr in accordance with the transfer speed condition, the smallest burr occurred at 150mm/min in the side part, and the smallest burr occurred at 150mm/min and 200mm/min in the case of the outlet burr. The size of the burr according to the entry angle tended to decrease as the tool entry angle increased, and the side part tended to increase as the tool entry angle increased. As a result of the cutting surface analysis, it was confirmed that the base material was eluted under all conditions, and the faster the transfer speed, the lower the elution phenomenon of the base material. Based on the above results, cutting the CFRTP material with an ultrasonic knife is possible, but the effect on heat generation caused by friction needs to be minimized, and further research needs to be conducted on this.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composite provides outstanding mechanical capabilities and is therefore popular in the automotive and aerospace industries. Drilling is a common final production technique for composite laminates however, drilling high-strength composite laminates is extremely complex and challenging. The delamination of composites during the drilling at the entry and exit of the hole has a severe impact on the results of the holes surface and the material properties. The major goal of this research is to investigate contemporary industry solutions for drilling CFRP composites: enhanced edge geometries of cutting tools. This study examined the occurrence of delamination at the entry and exit of the hole during the drilling. For each of the 80°, 90°, and 118°point angle uncoated Brad point, Dagger, and Twist solid carbide drills, Taguchi design of experiments were undertaken. Cutting parameters included three variable cutting speeds (100-125-150 m/min) and feed rates (0.1-0.2-0.3 mm/rev). Brad point drills induced less delamination than dagger and twist drills, according to the research, and the best cutting parameters were found to be a combination of maximum cutting speed, minimum feed rate, and low drill point angle (V:150 m/min, f: 0.1 mm/rev, θ: 80°). The feed rate was determined to be the most efficient factor in preventing hole entry and exit delamination using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Regression analysis was used to create first-degree mathematical models for each cutting tool's entrance and exit delamination components. The results of optimization, mathematical modelling, and experimental tests are thought to be reasonably coherent based on the information obtained.
Extensive researches have been carried out on machine tool chatter to obtain assessment procedure and improvement measures. In this study, chatter limit is predicted on a newly fabricated universal machining center by the combination of structural dynamic characteristics and cutting mechanics. We showed the unstable cutting conditions, and from them we could plot the unstable borderlines. From the chatter simulations we could say that the newly built universal machining center can be well used in the finishing machining of steel as other common machine tools.

Alumina, a typical ceramic material used for semiconductors and display parts, is the subject of research and development efforts for mineral material processing. Alumina is extremely difficult to process since it is brittleness to either fine ceramics material. We have studied the shape of diamond particles and their use in machinability for alumina processing. Our study was carried out under various processing conditions, including cutting speed, table speed, and the surface roughness of the work piece. We also analyzed the wear characteristics of the tool by total cutting.

Mordern industrial society pursues unmanned system and automation of manufacturing process. Abreast with this tendensy, production of goods which requires advanced accuracy is increasing as well. According to this, the work sensing time of dressing by monitoring and diagnosing the condition of grinding, which is th representative way in accurate manufacturing, is an important work to prevent serious damages which affect grinding process or products by wearing grinding wheel. Computer vision system was composed, so that grinding wheel surface was acquired by CCD camera and the change of cutting edge ratio was measured. Then we used automatic thresholding technique from histogram as a way of dividing grinding cutting edge from grinding surface. As a result, we are trying to approach unmanned system and automation by deciding more accurate time of dressing and by visualizing behavior of grinding wheel by making use of computer vision.
