  • Anode off-gas of high temperature fuel cell still contains combustible components such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon. In this study, a catalytic combustor has been applied to the high temperature fuel cell so that the combustion of anode-off gas can be boosted up. Since the performance of catalytic combustor directly depends on the combustion catalyst, this study is designed to perform the experimental investigation on the combustion characteristics of the three commercial catalysts with a different composition. Screening tests with three catalysts are preceded before the performance examination since it is necessary to determine the most suitable catalyst for design configuration of the catalytic combustor. The performance analysis shows that methane conversion rate strongly depends on gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) as well as inlet gas temperature. Additionally, the GSHV optimization results show that the optimum GHSV will be in the range between 18,000 $hr^{-1}$ and 36,000 $hr^{-1}$. It is also shown that the minimum inlet temperature of catalytic reaction of methane is from $100^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper provides the effects on the leakage characteristics of the surface roughness of a valve stem in LPG automotive. The valve stem seal is to stop an oil leakage through a sealing gap between a valve stem and a valve stem seal. The sealing performance of two components is related to a leak safety and a long life of a valve stem and a valve stem seal. The experimental results show that the optimal surface roughness of a valve stem is to recommend as $0.4{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$ in a centerline average roughness, Ra and a uniformly distributed profile of the roughness. Basically the smooth surface and uniform profiles of the roughness may reduce an oil leakage between a valve stem and a valve stem seal.

  • In this work, a medical linear array ultrasonic transducer working in the range of 20 MHz has been developed for high-resolution ultrasonic imaging. After devising the structure of the transducer suitable for the transmission of high-frequency waves, we optimized the dimension of constituent components. Then, the process to fabricate the transducer was developed to realize the designed structure, and a prototype of the transducer was fabricated and characterized. The center frequency of the fabricated transducer was measured to be 19 MHz, and the fractional bandwidth to be 84.5 %, and the standard deviation of the sensitivity over the entire channels to be 0.74 dB. These measurement results showed good agreement with design data, which confirmed the validity of the high frequency ultrasonic transducer structure developed in this work. It was confirmed that the developed transducer with new structure had wider frequency bandwidth and uniform sensitivity than a conventional 20 MHz transducer.

  • The electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique makes use of surface-bonded lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patches as impedance transducers measuring impedance variations monitored on host structural components. The present experimental work further evaluate an alternative to the conventional EMI technique which performs measurements of the variations in the output voltage of PZT transducers rather than computing electromechanical impedance (or admittance) itself. This paper further evaluates a variant of the EMI approach presented in a previous work of the present authors, suitable, for low-cost concrete structures monitoring applications making use of a credit card-sized Raspberry Pi single board computer as core hardware unit. This monitoring approach is also deployed by introducing a new damage identification index based on the ratio between the area of the 2-D error ellipse of specific probability of EMI-based measurements containment over that of the 2-D error circle of equivalent probability. Experimental results of damages occurring in concrete cubic and beam specimens are investigated under increasing loading conditions. Results illustrate that the proposed technique is an efficient approach for identification and early detection of damage in concrete structures.

  • The focus of this article is on the assessment of vertical wind vector components and their aerodynamic impact on lattice framework, specifically two distinct sections of a guyed transmission tower. Thunderstorm winds, notably very localized events such as convective downdrafts (including downbursts) and tornadoes, result in a different load on a tower's structural system in terms of magnitude and spatial distribution when compared to horizontal synoptic winds. Findings of previous model-scale experiments are outlined and their results considered for the development of a testing rig that allows for rotation about multiple body axes through a series of wind tunnel tests. Experimental results for the wind loads on two unique experimental models are presented and the difference in behaviour discussed. For a model cross arm with a solidity ratio of approximately 30%, the drag load was increased by 14% when at a pitch angle of $20^{\circ}$. Although the effects of rotation about the vertical body axis, or the traditional 'angle of attack', are recognized by design codes as being significant, provisions for vertical winds are absent from each set of wind loading specifications examined. The inclusion of a factor to relate winds with a vertical component to the horizontal speed is evaluated as a vertical wind factor applicable to load calculations. Member complexity and asymmetric geometry often complicate the use of lattice wind loading provisions, which is a challenge that extends to future studies and codification. Nevertheless, the present work is intended to establish a basis for such studies.

  • Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modem air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras($1280pixel{\times}1024pixel$) were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

  • SiC materials have been extensively studied for high temperature components in advanced energy system and advanced gas turbine. However, the brittle characteristics of SiC such as low fracture toughness and low strain-to fracture still impose a severe limitation on practical applications of SiC materials. For these reasons, $SiC_f/SiC$ composites can be considered as a promising for various structural materials, because of their good fracture toughness compared with monolithic SiC ceramics. But, high temperature and pressure lead to the degradation of the reinforcing fiber during the hot pressing. Therefore, reduction of sintering temperature and pressure is key requirements for the fabrication of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites by hot pressing method. In the present work, Monolithic LPS-SiC was fabricated by hot pressing method in Ar atmosphere at 1760 $^{\circ}C$, 1780 $^{\circ}C$, 1800 $^{\circ}C$ and 1820 $^{\circ}C$ under 20 MPa using $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ system as sintering additives in order to low sintering temperature. The starting powder was high purity ${\beta}-SiC$ nano-powder with an average particle size of 30 nm. Monolithic LPS-SiC was evaluated in terms of sintering density, micro-structure, flexural strength, elastic modulus and so on. Sintered density, flexural strength and elastic modulus of fabricated LPS-SiC increased with increasing the sintering temperature. In the micro-structure of this specimen, it was found that grain of sintered body was grown from 30 nm to 200 nm.

  • Recently, development efforts of triple-effect absorption chiller have been increased in order to improve the efficiency of double-effect absorption chiller. However, triple-effect absorption chiller has some disadvantages, including high corrosion characteristic of LiBr solution at high temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Moreover, it is necessary to develop new components for operation under high pressure of 2 bars even though COP is increased to 1.6 or 1.7. The objective of this study was to introduce a new system by combining double effect absorption chiller with single effect absorption chiller with multi-generators using bypass flow of LiBr dilute solution to $3^{rd}$ generator to overcome the disadvantages of triple-effect chiller and improve energy efficiency. Results indicate that the new absorption cycle had a much higher efficiency than double-effect chiller system, showing significant improvement when bypass solution flow rate of 25% was applied to the $3^{rd}$ generator using the main dilute solution of the absorber. The COP of the new chiller system was found to be 1.438, which was 21.7% higher than that (1.18) of the present double-effect system. The COP was decreased when solution by-pass rate to the $3^{rd}$ generator was increased. In addition, lower cooling water temperature caused higher COP. Therefore, the multi-generator system with by-pass solution might be an excellent chiller alternative to triple-effect absorption chiller with higher efficiency.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic effects on the flow field under the wing with varying aspect ratio were investigated by measuring pressures on the lower surface of wing and analysing velocity components using Particle Image Velocimetry at Reynolds numbers of $1.384{\times}10^5$ and $2.306{\times}10^5$. In case of aspect ratio 4.8 which keeps the wing tip at a distance of 80% chord length from the pylon, the vortex from the wing tip influenced the flow field under the wing by reducing static pressures on the lower surface and increasing the velocity in proximity of the wing tip. Throughout the results, it is observed that aerodynamic effects of wing tip on the flow field around pylon under wing become insignificant as the aspect ratio increases.

  • Polyester/melamine cured coatings had been used for pre-primed coatings and pre-coated metal coatings, because it has good mechanical, chemical properties, and mar resistance. But it has weak points such as stiffness and low formability for making automotive components. Polyester had been synthesized using polycarbonate diol of long alkyl chain which can improve flexibility and formability which is one of the important factors for pre-coated steel sheets (PCM). In this study, strain and tensile strength were examined by the tensile test and formability was examined by the drawing test. Also, Those polyester resins were also measured by DMA to verify flexibility of cured coatings.
