  • In this paper, the process of extruding Cu-10Fe alloy using a finite element analysis (FEA) was theoretically analyzed. To achieve this, the dependence of strain rate and temperature of the alloy required for the extrusion process was secured by utilizing databases for Cu and Fe and the KHL model. For microstructure analysis, FE-SEM with EDS was used to distinguish the phases present in Cu-10Fe alloy. The mechanical characteristics of Cu-10Fe alloy were secured using the results of fitting the mechanical properties of Copper and Steel from the Deform database to the KHL model. The deformation behavior within the alloy during hot extrusion was analyzed, providing insights into effective stress, effective strain, effective strain rate, and temperature. It was observed that the strain distribution was non-uniform. These research findings contribute to an improved understanding of the hot extrusion process of Cu-10Fe alloy and can aid in predicting the mechanical properties of the material.

  • Misch metal (rare earth element, Ce, La, Nd, Pr) which has large influence on high-temperature stability and toughness was added to the Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, and squeeze casting was used for Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys. The effect of applied pressure and misch metal additions on mechanical properties in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy by direct squeeze casting has been investigated. The applied pressure were 0 MPa(gravity casting), 25, 50 and 75 MPa. Squeeze-cast Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys had better mechanical properties than those of non-pressurized cast alloys because of the increased cooling rate by the application of pressure during solidification. By the addition of misch metal in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, better combination of strength and elongation was obtained. The addition of 0.3%Mm in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy improved the heat resistant property due to the formation of fine eutectic phases.

  • Effects of conventional rolling(CR) and differential speed rolling(DSR) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Si alloy were investigated in detail. The copper alloy with thickness of 3 mm was rolled to 50 % reduction at ambient temperature without lubricant with a differential speed ratio of 2:1. The conventional rolling in which the rolling speed of upper and lower rolls is identical was performed under identical rolling conditions. The shear strain introduced by the CR showed positive values at positions of upper roll side and negative values at positions of lower roll side. However, it showed zero or positive values at all positions for the samples rolled by the DSR. The microstrucure and texture development of the as-rolled copper alloy did not show any significant difference between CR and DSR. The tensile strength of the DSR processed specimen was larger than that of the CR processed specimen. The effects of rolling methods on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-rolled copper alloy are discussed in terms of the shear strain.

  • Austenite stainless steel(ASS), aluminum alloy and nickel steel alloy are the most widely used in many cryogenic applications due to superior mechanical properties at low temperature. The Face-Centered Cubic(FCC) and Hexagonal Close-Packed(HCP) materials are used for the primary and secondary insulation barrier of Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) carrier tank and various kinds of LNG applications currently. In this study, tensile tests of ASS, aluminum alloy and nickel steel alloy were carried out for the acquisition of quantitative mechanical properties under the cryogenic environment. The range of thermal condition was room temperature to $-163^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range was 0.00016/s to 0.01/s considering the dependencies of temperatures and strain rates. The comprehensive test data were analyzed in terms of the characteristics of mechanical behavior for the development of constitutive equation and its application.

  • A study was made to investigate the microstructure and the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel, Al-Mg alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy each representing bcc, fcc and hcp crystal structures, respectively fabricated by equal-channel angular(ECA) pressing. After a series of ECA pressings was performed, most grains were significantly refined below ${\mu}m$ in diameter with high mis-orientation of grain boundaries irrespective of different crystal structure used. Regarding the strain hardening capability, tensile tests of ultrafine grain (UFG) dual-phase (ferrite/martensite) steel which was different from UFG ferrite-pearlite steel were carried out at ambient temperature, and corresponding mechanical properties were discussed in relation to modified C-J analysis. Low-temperature and/or high strain-rate superplasticity of the UFG Al-Mg alloy and UFG Ti-6Al-4V alloy were also studied. Based on the analysis used in this study, it was concluded that UFG alloys exhibited the enhanced mechanical properties as compared to coarse-grained (CG) counterparts.

  • This study was performed to observe the microhardness change of the surface and the bonding strength between the porcelain and alloy specimens in order to investigate the effects of appended indium, tin and copper on interfacial properties of Au-Pd-Ag alloys. The hardness of castings was measured with a micro-Vicker's hardness tester. The interfacial shear bonding strength between alloy specimen and fused porcelain was measured with a mechanical testing system(MTS 858.20). The microhardness of Au-Pd-Ag alloy was increased by adding indium and tin, but not increased by adding copper. The shear bonding strength of Au-Pd-Ag-Sn alloy and Au-Pd-Ag-Cu alloy showed 87MPa, 57MPa. The higher concentration of adding elements showed the higher shear bonding strength.

  • The precipitation behaviors of ${\gamma}"(Ni_3Nb)$ in four Ni-base alloys were investigated. The four alloys were forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, IN 718 alloy and ECAPed(equal channel angular pressing) IN 718 alloy. Aging treatment was employed at either $600^{\circ}C$ or $720^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs. The TEM observation and hardness test were performed to identify the formation of ${\gamma}"$. The precipitation of ${\gamma}"$ was noticed after aging at $600^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy, while it was observed after aging at $720^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP. The lower aging temperature for ${\gamma}"$ precipitation in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy than in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP appeared to be due to the severe plastic deformation which occurred during mechanical alloying or ECAP.

  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy for lightweight automotive parts were investigated. The test specimens were prepared by gravity casting process. Solution heat treatments were applied to as-cast alloys to improve mechanical properties. The microstructure of the gravity casting specimen presents a typical dendrite structure, having a secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of $37{\mu}m$. In addition to the Al matrix, a large amount of coarsened eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase, and Fe-rich phases were identified. After solution heat treatment, single-step solution heat treatments were found to considerably improve the spheroidization of the eutectic Si phase. Two-step solution treatments gave rise to a much improved spheroidization. The mechanical properties of the two-step solution heat treated alloy have been shown to lead to higher values of properties such as tensile strength and microhardness. Consequentially, the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al alloy have been successfully characterized and are available for use with other basic data for the development of lightweight automotive parts.

  • To overcome a climate change, manufacturing complex-shaped electric mobility parts becomes one of the important issues for enhancing a performance of motor with reducing their weight. Therefore, development of laser-based additive manufacturing shed on light due to their flexible manufacturing capacity that can be suitable to solve the poor formability of Fe-Si alloys for electric mobility parts. Although there are several studies existed to optimize the performance of additively manufactured Fe-Si alloys, the post-annealing effect was not well investigated yet though this is important to control the texture and mechanical properties of additively manufactured parts. In the present work, annealing effect on the mechanical property and microstructure of additively manufactured Fe-4.5Si alloy was investigated. Because of the ordered phase initiation after annealing, the hardness of additively manufactured Fe-4.5Si alloy increased up to 1173 K while a hardness drop occurs at the 1273 K condition due to the micro-crack initiation. The response surface methodology result represents the 1173 K-5 h sample is an optimal condition to maximize the mechanical property of additively manufactured alloy without micro-cracks.

  • The annealing behavior of a 5083 Al alloy deformed at cryogenic temperature was investigated, focusing on the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties. Especially, the effects of annealing temperature, $150~300^{\circ}C$, and time, 3∼60min., on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. The optimization of the annealing conditions resulted in a mixture of equiaxed grains and elongated subgrains, exhibiting a good combination of uniform elongation and high strength.
