Dynamic displacement response of civil structures is an important index for in-construction and in-service structural condition assessment. However, accurately measuring the displacement of large-scale civil structures such as high-rise buildings still remains as a challenging task. In order to cope with this problem, a vision-based system with the use of industrial digital camera and image processing has been developed for long-distance, remote, and real-time monitoring of dynamic displacement of supertall structures. Instead of acquiring image signals, the proposed system traces only the coordinates of the target points, therefore enabling real-time monitoring and display of displacement responses in a relatively high sampling rate. This study addresses the in-situ experimental verification of the developed vision-based system on the Canton Tower of 600 m high. To facilitate the verification, a GPS system is used to calibrate/verify the structural displacement responses measured by the vision-based system. Meanwhile, an accelerometer deployed in the vicinity of the target point also provides frequency-domain information for comparison. Special attention has been given on understanding the influence of the surrounding light on the monitoring results. For this purpose, the experimental tests are conducted in daytime and nighttime through placing the vision-based system outside the tower (in a brilliant environment) and inside the tower (in a dark environment), respectively. The results indicate that the displacement response time histories monitored by the vision-based system not only match well with those acquired by the GPS receiver, but also have higher fidelity and are less noise-corrupted. In addition, the low-order modal frequencies of the building identified with use of the data obtained from the vision-based system are all in good agreement with those obtained from the accelerometer, the GPS receiver and an elaborate finite element model. Especially, the vision-based system placed at the bottom of the enclosed elevator shaft offers better monitoring data compared with the system placed outside the tower. Based on a wavelet filtering technique, the displacement response time histories obtained by the vision-based system are easily decomposed into two parts: a quasi-static ingredient primarily resulting from temperature variation and a dynamic component mainly caused by fluctuating wind load.

In this paper, a back analysis program for analyzing the behavior of tunnel-ground system and evaluating the material properties and tunnel design parameters was developed. This program was designed to be able to implement the back analysis of underground structure by combination of using FLAC and optimized algorithm as direct method. In particular, Rosenbrock method which is able to do direct search without obtaining differential coefficient was adopted for the back analysis algorithm among optimization methods. This back analysis program was applied to the site to evaluate the design parameters. The back analysis was carried out using field measurement results from 5 sites. In the course of back analysis, nonlinear regression analysis was carried out to identify the optimum function of the measured ground displacement. Exponential function and fractional function were used for the regression analysis and total displacement calculated by optimum function was used as the back analysis input data. As a result, displacement recalculated through the back analysis using measured displacement of the structure showed 4.5% of error factor comparing to the measured data. Hence, the program developed in this study proved to be effectively applicable to tunnel analysis.
Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the load carrying capacity of a target bridge structure based on the simple slab bridge of concrete over 20 years of public service. Method: By performing static loading test and dynamic loading test, the displacement, strain, impact factor, and natural frequency values were measured and evaluated through analysis method. Result: The main results of this study are as follows. First, the maximum displacement and maximum strain of S1 were assessed at 2.917 mm and 44.720 𝜇ε( tensile) and -13.760 𝜇ε(compression), respectively, with S2 maximum displacement and maximum strain being 2.100 mm and 4.870 𝜇ε(tensile), respectively. Second, the maximum measured impact factor was 0.191 in section S1 A-A, and the maximum measured impact factor was 0.155 in section S2 C-C. Third, the natural frequency was assessed at 6.086 Hz, and the measurement was found to be within the range of 6.152 Hz to 6.738 Hz. Conclusion: The tested bridge may be evaluated to show good behavior and characteristics for the design load.
The purpose of this study is to develop a new technique to quickly assess the quantitative stability of a tunnel by using measured displacement at the tunnel construction site. To achieve this purpose, in this study, a critical strain concept was introduced for the first time and applied to an assessment of a tunnel under construction. The new technique calculates numerically the strains of the surrounding ground by using displacements measured during tunnel excavation. The techniques considering the relative displacement, shotcrete, and anisotropic characteristics of ground were newly introduced after reinvestigating the existing analysis technique. In addition, an analysis module was developed based on the proposed analysis technique in this study, and the applicability of the developed module was verified. To verify the module, first of all, the calculated excavation displacements of a cylindrical tunnel by analytic method and commercial programs (Pentagon-3D, Flac-2D) were compared for the confirmation of applicability of commercial programs. Then, the calculated excavation displacements under the same initial condition, both with and without a shotcrete lining, by two commercial programs were compared. finally, we assess the load condition and material properties of in-situ ground by inputting tunnel excavation displacement, which was calculated by a commercial program, into the developed analysis module (FAST-Ver. 1.2, feedback Analysis System for Tunneling), and checked whether the assessed results conform to the originally assumed values.
The behaviors of a diaphragm wall and a contiguous pile wall such as CIP(Case-in-place pile) and SCW(Soil-cement wall), applied to the top-down construction method, were analyzed using the SUNEX program, which is widely used to design earth retaining walls. Four types of earth pressures, as described by Rankine (1857), Terzaghi and Peck (1967), Tchbotarioff (1973), and Hong and Yun (1995a), were applied to the analysis program to predict the lateral displacement of walls. The results show that the displacements of an earth retaining walls vary with the applied earth pressure. The predicted lateral displacement based on Hong & Yun's (1995a) earth pressure is similar to the measured displacement. Therefore, the actual lateral displacement of an earth retaining wall, as applied to top-down construction method, can be accurately predicted by using an analysis program considering Hong and Yun's (1995a) earth pressure.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare three dimensional displacement and peak velocity of the center of mass (COM) during obstacle crossing in young and older adults. METHODS: 10 young adults (6 males/4 females, $24.6{\pm}1.9$ years, age range: 22.0-26.9) and 10 older adults (1 male/9 females, $76.9{\pm}5.1$ years, age range: 65.2-81.2) participated in the study. Both groups crossed an obstacle, which is 10% of leg length, and COM was measured using motion analysis system. Independent t-test was used to find significant differences between two groups. RESULTS: The older adults showed significantly greater and faster COM displacement and peak velocity in mediolateral (M-L) direction as compared with young adults (p<.01 and p<.001 respectively). However, the young adults showed significantly greater and faster COM displacement and peak velocity in anteroposterior (A-P) direction as compared with older adults (p<.05 and p<.001 respectively). Furthermore, the young adults showed faster peak velocity of COM in vertical direction as compared with older adults (p<.001). However, no significant difference was found in the COM displacement in vertical direction between two groups. CONCLUSION: Greater and faster COM displacement and peak velocity in M-L direction in older adults were due to compensatory adjustment for appropriate contact on base of support of swing limb. Thus, the motion of the COM in M-L direction may be a crucial factor to identify risk of falls in older adults.

Objective: The displacement of the hyoid bone (HB) is a critical biomechanical component of the swallowing function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the swallowing-induced vertical and horizontal displacements of the HB in subjects with 2 different magnitudes of skeletal Class III malocclusion, by means of real-time, balanced turbo-field-echo (B-TFE) cine-magnetic resonance imaging. Methods: The study population comprised 19 patients with mild skeletal Class III malocclusion, 16 with severe skeletal Class III malocclusion, and 20 with a skeletal Class I relationship. Before the commencement of the study, all subjects underwent cephalometric analysis to identify the nature of skeletal malformations. B-TFE images were obtained for the 4 consecutive stages of deglutition as each patient swallowed 10 mL of water, and the vertical and horizontal displacements of the HB were measured at each stage. Results: At all stages of swallowing, the vertical position of the HB in the severe Class III malocclusion group was significantly lower than those in the mild Class III and Class I malocclusion groups. Similarly, the horizontal displacement of the HB was found to be significantly associated with the severity of malocclusion, i.e., the degree of Class III malocclusion, while the amount of anterior displacement of the HB decreased with an increase in the severity of the Class III deformity. Conclusions: Our findings indicate the existence of a relationship between the magnitude of Class III malocclusion and HB displacement during swallowing.

In this study, we developed a finite element model for the built-in bottom-freezer type refrigerator and then used the structural analysis method to analyze and evaluate the deflection of the doors. We tested the validity of the developed analytical model by measuring the deflection of the hinge when loads were applied to the upper and lower hinges of the refrigerating compartment and compared these with the analysis results. The comparison of the vertical displacement of the measured result and the analysis result showed an error ratio of up to 12.8%, which indicates that the analytical model is consistent. Using the analytical model composed of the cabinet, hinges and doors, we performed analyses for two cases: both doors closed, and the refrigerating door open. Since the maximum vertical displacement of the refrigerating compartment door (R-door) with the food load is smaller than the gap between the lower surface of the R-door and the upper surface of the freezer compartment door (F-door), it is judged that the R-door and the F-door do not contact when the doors are opened or closed. In addition, the analysis result showed that the difference between the vertical displacement at the hinge on the opposite side and the hinge side of the R-door is favorably smaller than the management criterion of the refrigerator manufacturer.
In this study the applicability of a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method was investigated by measuring the displacement and vibration of rock pillar due to underground mining blasting. When combined with a high speed photography technology, the DIC method provides an excellent photographic image processing ability that can be used to convert the evolving full-field surface properties of structures to 2D or 3D set of coordinate values. The measured coordinate sets are then used to calculate the displacement, strain, and velocity of the target structure. This technique is widely used in science and engineering, and continuously finds its new application areas. In this study, the DIC system and the conventional seismograph were compared for their ability to measure the displacement and vibration produced by blasting. In the field test both methods showed similar results. Thus, it is concluded that the DIC method is feasible to measure the ground displacements and vibrations from blasting.
The purpose of this study was to investigate relation between fastball motion and longtoss motion, and the kinematical analysis using APAS(Ariel Performance Analysis System). Eight people(age: $21.2{\pm}3.6years$, height: $177.1{\pm}3.1cm$, weight $68.6{\pm}2.5kg$) participated in the experiment. Followings are the conclusion. In displacement of fore-aft on COG(Center of Gravity), fastball motion moved more forward than longtoss motion. In displacement of vertical on COG(Center of Gravity), fastball motion was lower than longtoss motion In velocity of right hand, greater release velocity was measured for fastball motion than for longtoss motion. In displacement of elbow and shoulder joint, more extended displacement was exhibited in fastball motion than longtoss motion. In displacement of trunk tilt, fastball motion showed foreward tilt, longtoss motion showed backward tilt. In stride, fastball showed longer than longtoss.
