To improve AEP, wind turbine blade lengths are increasing every year. As the length of blades increases, the blade tip speed also increases. Because of the increased tip speed, the impact energy between the leading edge and raindrops also increases. The increased impact energy is the primary factor contributing to erosion of the blade's leading edge. Blade leading edge erosion reduces aerodynamic performance, increases repair costs, and causes downtime. Therefore, numerous studies are being conducted on protective solutions and RET systems to prevent and delay erosion of the blade's leading edge. However, few institutions in Korea research protective solutions and RET systems. In this study, we aim to develop a laboratory-scale RET system. The developed RET system was based on the ASTM G73-10 standard. As a result of the RET, it was confirmed that the erosion tendency was similar to that of overseas institutions. In addition, the effectiveness of the RET system was verified by a maximum erosion rate of 0.0023 for an epoxy-based protective solution.

A control algorithm for a 100 kW wind turbine is designed in this study. The wind turbine is operating as a variable speed variable pitch (VSVP) status. Also, this wind turbine is a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) Type. For the medium capacity wind turbine considered in this study, it was found that the optimum tip speed ratios to achieve the maximum power coefficients varied with wind speeds. Therefore a commercial blade element momentum theory and multi-body dynamics based program was implemented to consider the variation of aerodynamic coefficients with respect to Reynolds numbers and to find out the power and thrust coefficients with respect tip speed ratio and blade pitch angles. In the end a basic power controller was designed for below rated, transition and above rated regions, and a load reduction algorithm was designed to reduce tower vibration by the nacelle motion. As a result, damage equivalent Load (DEL) of tower fore-aft has been reduced by 32%. From dynamic simulations in the commercial program, the controller was found to work properly as designed. Experimental validation of the control algorithm will be done in the future.

The purpose of this study is to examine the structural stability of a low speed 200 W class gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine system. For the analysis, a commercial code is adopted. The pressure distribution on the rotor blade surface is examined in detail. In order to perform unidirectional FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis, the pressure resulted from CFD analysis has been mapped on the surface of wind turbine as load condition. The rotational speed and gravitational force of wind turbine are also considered. The results of FSI analysis show that the wind turbine reveals an enough structural margin. The maximum structural displacement occurs at trailing edge of blade and the maximum stress occurs at the strut.

Conventional wind power generators have limited installation sites due to low efficiency due to reverse resistance or high cut-in speed. To compensate for these problems, this study proposed another new type of tilting wind turbine. The key to this method is the structural design of a cylindrical cam with a guide groove that allows the blade to tilt. As the blade rotates by the cam, it tilts according to the angle. In the section that generates torque by receiving drag, the blade is made perpendicular to the wind. And it is a structure that creates a parallel state with the wind in the section where reverse resistance occurs. We prepared six types of cams considering the length of the section subject to drag, reverse resistance, tilting section. The performance was analyzed as the maximum value of the output, torque coefficient, and efficiency coefficient, which is indicated by setting different wind speed and low TSR.

The persistence analysis of marine physical environment factors is a basic analysis that must precede the use of sea areas as an analysis required in the coastal engineering such as downtime and design. In this study, the persistence analysis was implemented for wind speed and significant wave height data from four observation points of Deokjeokdo, Oeyeondo, Geomundo, and Geojedo among the marine meteorological observation buoys of the Korea Meteorological Administration. The persistence time means the consecutive time of observation data beyond specific level. The threshold wind speed and significant wave height were set in the range of 1~15 m/s and the range of 0.25~3.0 m, respectively. Then, the persistence time was extracted. As a result of the analysis, the persistence time of wind speed and significant wave height decreased rapidly as the reference value increased. The median persistence times under the maximum reference thresholds were assessed as a maximum of 5 hours for wind speed and a maximum of 8 hours for significant wave height. When the reference wind speed and significant wave height were 15 m/s and 3 m, respectively, the persistence time that could occur with a 1% probability were 52 and 56 hours. This study can be expanded to all coastal areas in Korea, and it is expected that various engineering applications by performing a persistence analysis of the metocean data.

This paper presents a grid-connected dual stator-winding induction generator (DWIG) wind power system suitable for wide wind speed ranges. The parallel connection via a unidirectional diode between dc buses of both stator-winding sides is employed in this DWIG system, which can output a high dc voltage over wide wind speed ranges. Grid-connected inverters (GCIs) do not require booster converters; hence, the efficiency of wind energy utilization increases, and the hardware topology and control strategy of GCIs are simplified. In view of the particularities of the parallel topology and the adopted generator control strategy, we propose a novel excitation-capacitor optimization solution to reduce the volume and weight of the static excitation controller. When this excitation-capacitor optimization is carried out, the maximum power tracking problem is also considered. All the problems are resolved with the combined control of the DWIG and GCI. Experimental results on the platform of a 37 kW/600 V prototype show that the proposed DWIG wind power system can output a constant dc voltage over wide rotor speed ranges for grid-connected operations and that the proposed excitation optimization scheme is effective.
The use of boost chopper in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) aims to capture maximum power at any wind speed condition. It is reached by adjusting the duty cycle of boost chopper. In this paper, fuzzy logic algorithm is used to find the duty cycle value which yields the maximum power output. This control scheme is verified by PSIM simulation. Another MPPT method is also simulated as a comparison.
This paper describes a procedure to develop fragility curves for woodframe structures subjected to lateral wind loads. The fragilities are cast in terms of horizontal displacement criteria (maximum drift at the top of the shearwalls). The procedure is illustrated through the development of fragility curves for one and two-story residential woodframe buildings in high wind regions. The structures were analyzed using a monotonic pushover analysis to develop the relationship between displacement and base shear. The base shear values were then transformed to equivalent nominal wind speeds using information on the geometry of the baseline buildings and the wind load equations (and associated parameters) in ASCE 7-02. Displacement vs. equivalent nominal wind speed curves were used to determine the critical wind direction, and Monte Carlo simulation was used along with wind load parameter statistics provided by Ellingwood and Tekie (1999) to construct displacement vs. wind speed curves. Wind speeds corresponding to a presumed limit displacement were used to construct fragility curves. Since the fragilities were fit well using a lognormal CDF and had similar logarithmic standard deviations (${\xi}$), a quick analysis to develop approximate fragilities is possible, and this also is illustrated. Finally, a compound fragility curve, defined as a weighted combination of individual fragilities, is developed.

For a power grid that has a high wind penetration level, when wind speeds are continuously fluctuating, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of a variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) causes the significant output power fluctuation of a VSWT, thereby significantly fluctuating the system frequency. In this paper, an improved power-smoothing scheme of a VSWT is presented that significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation caused by varying wind speeds. The proposed scheme employs an additional control loop based on the frequency deviation that operates in combination with the MPPT control loop. To improve the power-smoothing capability of a VSWT in the over-frequency section (OFS), the control gain of the additional loop, which is set to be inversely proportional to the rotor speed, is proposed. In contrast, the control gain in the under-frequency section is set to be proportional to the rotor speed to improve the power-smoothing capability while avoiding over-deceleration of the rotor speed of a VSWT. The proposed scheme significantly improves the performance of the power-smoothing capability in the OFS, thereby smoothing the frequency fluctuation. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation by employing the different control gain for the OFS under various wind penetration scenarios.
The spanwise aerodynamic loads of the wind turbine blade are investigated numerically. The blade shape such as twist and chord length along the blade span is obtained from the procedure of aerodynamically optimal design. The rated tip speed ratio and the rated wind velocity are set to 7 and 12m/s respectively. The BEM method is applied to obtain both the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine (Fig.1) and the spanwise aerodynamic loads along the blade span including Prandtl's tip loss factor. The maximum running power coefficient is occurred around 90% radial position from hub (Fig.2). The distributed aerodynamic loads along the blade span can be used for structure analysis.
