모드 II 하중을 받는 CTS 시험편의 피로균열 전파거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior in CTS Specimen under Mode II Loading)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate fatigue crack behavior under shear(Mode II) loading. Various specimens and devices have been used in order to produce Mode II loading in fatigue experiments for shear crack propagation. But, there is not sufficient comparisons of experimental results between Mode II and others loading modes, because of characteristics of applied loads and specimens. So, compact tension shear(CTS) specimens were used in this paper to investigate the propagation behavior of Mode II by comparing the experimental results between loading modes. We firstly observed the characteristics which was showed in Mode II experiment using CTS specimens. The experimental results under Mode II loading were compared with fatigue crack behavior under Mode I and Mixed-mode I+II loading. The characteristics for initiation and propagation behavior under Mode II loading was investigated by such comparisons.

인텀샤프트 일체형 유니버셜 파이프 조인트용 다단조금형의 단조공정해석 (Forging Process Analysis of the Multi-forging Die for the Unified Universal Pipe Joint of the Intermediate Shaft)

  • This study was aimed at the design of the dies for the unified pipe joint of the intermediate shaft using the computer simulation to shorten the period of production, on the basis of the process planning which was designed by the field experts. In the computer simulation, 'Deform-3d' and 'eesy-DieOpt' have been used, which are the commercial process analysis and die design program. Through the process analysis, we could know the propriety of the forming process, the inner pressure of the die and the suitable fitting pressure between the insert and the sleeve which was not showing any positive tangential stresses in the insert. Through the simulation of die design, we could know the number of the stress ring, the diameter ratios, the stresses of the die, the shrink fitting tolerance and temperature in the condition of the already determined maximum outer die diameter of the multi-stage former. The validity of the die design using the computer simulation was analyzed by the experiments and the results were satisfactory. As the results of this study, the new and easy die design system for multi-forging has been developed.

In the computer simulation,'eesy-2-form' of 2D FEM simulation package and 'eesy-DieOpt' have been used, which are the commercial process analysis and die design program. Through the simulation of 'eesy-2-form', we could know the propriety of the forming process, the inner pressure of the die and the suitable fitting pressure between the insert and the sleeve which was not showing any positive tangential stresses in the insert. Through the simulation of 'eesy-DieOpt', we could know the number of the stress ring, the diameter ratios, the stresses of the die, the shrink fitting tolerance and temperature in the condition of the already determined maximum outer die diameter of the multi-stage former. The validity of the die design using the computer simulation was analyzed by the experiments and the results were satisfactory. As the results of this study, the new and easy die design system for cold forging has been developed.

Quantitative assessment of depth and extent of notch brittle failure in deep tunneling using inferential statistical analysis

  • A stress-induced brittle failure in deep tunneling generates spalling and slabbing, eventually causing a v-shaped notch formation. An empirical relationship for the depth of the notch to the maximum tangential stress assuming an equivalent circular cross-section was proposed (Martin et al. 1999). While this empirical approach has been well recognized in the industry and used as a design guideline in many projects, its applicability to a non-circular opening is worth revisiting due to the use of equivalent circular profile. Moreover, even though the extent of the notch also contributes to notch failure, it has not been estimated to date. When the estimate of both the depth and the extent of notch are combined, a practical and economically justifiable support design can be achieved. In this study, a new methodology to assess the depth as well as the extent of notch failure is developed. Field data and numerical simulations using the Cohesion Weakening Frictional Strengthening (CWFS) model were collected and correlated with the three most commonly accepted failure criteria (σ13, Dismaxc, σdevcm). For the numerical analyses, the D-shaped tunnel was used since most civil tunnels are built to this profile. Inferential statistical analysis is applied to predict the failure range with a 95% confidence level. Considering its accuracy and simplicity, the new correlation can be used as an enhanced version of failure assessment.

Decision based uncertainty model to predict rockburst in underground engineering structures using gradient boosting algorithms

  • Rockburst is a dynamic, multivariate, and non-linear phenomenon that occurs in underground mining and civil engineering structures. Predicting rockburst is challenging since conventional models are not standardized. Hence, machine learning techniques would improve the prediction accuracies. This study describes decision based uncertainty models to predict rockburst in underground engineering structures using gradient boosting algorithms (GBM). The model input variables were uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), uniaxial tensile strength (UTS), maximum tangential stress (MTS), excavation depth (D), stress ratio (SR), and brittleness coefficient (BC). Several models were trained using different combinations of the input variables and a 3-fold cross-validation resampling procedure. The hyperparameters comprising learning rate, number of boosting iterations, tree depth, and number of minimum observations were tuned to attain the optimum models. The performance of the models was tested using classification accuracy, Cohen's kappa coefficient (k), sensitivity and specificity. The best-performing model showed a classification accuracy, k, sensitivity and specificity values of 98%, 93%, 1.00 and 0.957 respectively by optimizing model ROC metrics. The most and least influential input variables were MTS and BC, respectively. The partial dependence plots revealed the relationship between the changes in the input variables and model predictions. The findings reveal that GBM can be used to anticipate rockburst and guide decisions about support requirements before mining development.

대형선박용 유압실린더에서 경제요소법을 이용한 응력해석 (Analysis on the Stress of Hydraulic Cylinder for Large Vessel by Boundary Element Method)

  • 수산업분야의 생력화와 조업공정의 단축으로 새로운 활로를 개척할 수 있는 방안으로 보조기계들의 유압화 및 대형화에 사용되는 후벽 유압실린더는 작동응력 거동의 분석과 파손예측의 정확성이 강구되어야만 기계고장으로 인한 해난사고의 개연성을 미연에 감소시킬 수 있다. 균일한 내압을 받는 대형선박용 유압실린더를 수치해석적 방법인 경계요소법을 사용하여 각종 응력 해석의 시도는 엄밀해나 유한요소법의 결과와 비교적 양호하게 일치하고 있다. 축대칭 형상에 대한 반경방향 응력이나 원주방향 응력의 BEM 해석결과는 단일절점과 이중절점 모두 최대 25MPa의 압축응력이나 최대 52MPa의 인장응력이 작용하고 있으므로 재료의 허용응력내에서 작동하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이중절점 형상함수(double node shape function)를 사용하여 원통형 형상의 구조물에 대한 수치계산 결과의 정확도를 높힐수 있었으며 입력데이터의 증가는 오차감소에 기여하였으나 프로그램의 실행시간(run-time)을 증가시켰다. 코너에서의 트랙션벡터의 불연속 현상을 해결하기 위한 이중절점의 사용은 영역 내부해의 안정성을 확보하였고 경계부근에서의 내부해의 발산을 제거하기 위한 이중지수형 적분법 사용은 해석결과의 오차를 효과적으로 감소시켰다.
