We introduce a method of estimating an unknown failure rate function based on sample data. We estimate failure rate function by a function s from a space of cubic splines constrained to be linear (or constant) in tails using maximum likelihood estimation. The number of knots are determined by Bayesian Information Criterion(BIC). Examples using simulated data are used to illustrate the performance of this method.
In this paper we propose a logdensity estimation based on a Fourier expansion. The basis functions consisting of trigonometric functions are determinded by stepwise addition and deletion and the Bayes Information Criterion, where the maximum likelihood method is used to estimate the parameters. Numericla examples using real data and simulated data are provided to show the performance of proposed method.
Motivated by Cook's (1986) assessment of local influence by investigating the curvature of a surface associated with the overall discrepancy measure, this paper extends this idea to the linear regression model with AR(p) disturbances. Diagnostic for the linear regression models with AR(p) disturbances are discussed when simultaneous perturbations of the response vector are allowed. For the derived criterion, numerical studies demonstrate routine application of this work.
A generalized Stein-rule estimator of the vector of regression coefficients in linear regression model is considered and its properties are analyzed according to the criterion of Pitman nearness. A comparative study shows that the generalized Stein-rule estimator representing a class of estimators contains particular members which are better than the usual Stein-rule estimator according to the Pitman closeness.

This paper is to show a clustering application of a density estimation method that utilizes the Gaussian mixture model. We define "closeness measure" as a clustering criterion to see how close given two Gaussian components are. Closeness measure is defined as the ratio of log likelihood between two Gaussian components. According to simulations using artificial data, the clustering algorithm turned out to be very powerful in that it can correctly determine clusters in complex situations, and very flexible in that it can produce different sizes of clusters based on different threshold valuesold values

Based on the new detection criterion proposed in Part 1 for the detecton of weak M-ary signals, a detection scheme for ultra wideband multiple access systems is investigated in the presence of impulsive interference. Simulation results show that the proposed detector, requiring less complexity, possesses almost the same performance as the maximum likelihood detector. In impulsive interference, the proposed detector also offers performance improvement over the detector optimized for Gaussian environment.
In this paper, we propose a novel approach to statistical model-based voice activity detection (VAD) that incorporates a second-order conditional maximum a posteriori (CMAP) criterion. As a technical improvement for the first-order CMAP criterion in [1], we consider both the current observation and the voice activity decision in the previous two frames to take full consideration of the interframe correlation of voice activity. This is clearly different from the previous approach [1] in that we employ the voice activity decisions in the second-order (previous two frames) CMAP, which has quadruple thresholds with an additional degree of freedom, rather than the first-order (previous single frame). Also, a soft-decision scheme is incorporated, resulting in time-varying thresholds for further performance improvement. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional CMAP-based VAD technique under various experimental conditions.

Most existing wavelet-based multiplicative watermarking methods are affected by geometric attacks to a certain extent. A serious limitation of wavelet-based multiplicative watermarking is its sensitivity to rotation, scaling, and translation. In this study, we propose an image watermarking method by using dual-tree complex wavelet transform with a multi-objective optimization approach. We embed the watermark information into an image region with a high entropy value via a multiplicative strategy. The major contribution of this work is that the trade-off between imperceptibility and robustness is simply solved by using the multi-objective optimization approach, which applies the watermark error probability and an image quality metric to establish a multi-objective optimization function. In this manner, the optimal embedding factor obtained by solving the multi-objective function effectively controls watermark strength. For watermark decoding, we adopt a maximum likelihood decision criterion. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method by conducting simulations on benchmark test images. Experiment results demonstrate the imperceptibility of the proposed method and its robustness against various attacks, including additive white Gaussian noise, JPEG compression, scaling, rotation, and combined attacks.

Application of Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to the hydrological time series would be an innovative way to identify extreme rainfall events in a series. Even though the optimum number of hidden states can be identify based on maximizing the log-likelihood or minimizing Bayesian information criterion. However, occasionally value for the log-likelihood keep increasing with the state which gives false identification of the optimum hidden state. Therefore, this study attempts to identify optimum number of hidden states for Colombo station, Sri Lanka as fundamental approach to identify frequency and percentage of extreme rainfall events for the station. Colombo station consisted of daily rainfall values between 1961 and 2015. The representative station is located at the wet zone of Sri Lanka where the major rainfall season falls on May to September. Therefore, HMM was ran for the season of May to September between 1961 and 2015. Results showed more or less similar log-likelihood which could be identified as maximum for states between 4 to 7. Therefore, measure of central tendency (i.e. mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance and auto-correlation) for observed and simulated daily rainfall series was carried to each state to identify optimum state which could give statistically compatible results. Further, the method was applied for the second major rainfall season (i.e. October to February) for the same station as a comparison.
This paper addresses a voice personality transformation algorithm which makes one person's voices sound as if another person's voices. In the proposed method, one person's voices are represented by LPC cepstrum, pitch period and speaking rate, the appropriate transformation rules for each Parameter are constructed. The Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is used to model one speaker's LPC cepstrums and conditional probability is used to model the relationship between two speaker's LPC cepstrums. To obtain the parameters representing each probabilistic model. a Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation method is employed. The transformed LPC cepstrums are obtained by using a Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) criterion. Pitch period and speaking rate are used as the parameters for prosody transformation, which is implemented by using the ratio of the average values. The proposed method reveals the superior performance to the previous VQ-based method in subjective measures including average cepstrum distance reduction ratio and likelihood increasing ratio. In subjective test. we obtained almost the same correct identification ratio as the previous method and we also confirmed that high qualify transformed speech is obtained, which is due to the smoothly evolving spectral contours over time.
