  • Structural steel has been used as a primary materials to columns and beams since 1960's in Korea with an advantages of excellent of load-bearing capacity and design flexibility, and faster construction. However, if the steel columns made of structural steel exposed to fire the load-bearing capacity is going down steadily and finally reach to collapse. Therefore, building regulation requires fire resistance according to building occupation, scales. The fire resistance can be evaluated two categories. One is prescriptive method that is based on building regulation, specification and so on and the other is performance-based fire engineering method. The latter can be designed based on scientific and engineering consequences. The easiest evaluation way using the fire engineering design is comparing to the limiting temperature and maximum temperature calculated based on heat transfer theory. If the limiting temperature of a column exceeds the maximum temperature of it, the column can carry the load during the fire. Therefore, the database of limiting temperature is very essential for evaluation of column. In this paper, to build the database of column made of rectangular hollow sections 8 fire tests with loading were conducted and the relation between the limiting temperature and the applied loads showed in reverse proportion.

  • An automotive wheel bearing is one of the most important components to guarantee the service life of a passenger car. The endurance life of a bearing is affected by many parameters such as material properties, heat treatment, lubrication conditions, temperature, loading conditions, bearing geometry, internal clearance and so on. In this paper, we analyze the relation between loads and deformations of wheel bearing units. On the basis of it, we calculate the endurance life of wheel bearing units and suggest a method to determine the initial contact angle to achieve a maximum endurance life with considering stress concentration.

  • As machines become smaller and faster multileaf foil bearings are used to overcome the problems with heat, friction and wear Systems with foil bearings do not need a separate system for lubrication. These bearings are self acting and are therefore green systems. Until now, there have been many studies on the structural and dynamical performances. Therefore the object of the present study is to predict the flow and structural characteristics by using the Fluid/structure interaction method. The increase in RPM led to the increase in pressure, temperature difference, maximum velocity, Mach number, shear stress and torque. In the case of 90,000 RPM effects such as choking led to a non-lineararity in the system. Also the effect of eccentricity ratio was observed and showed that eccentricity increased the maximum pressure and the density difference while decreasing the shear stress and torque.

  • Cracking in connote structures is one of the main issues of structural design next to ensuring the load-bearing capacity. Thermal analysis is used to prevent thermal mucking, but concrete properties are uncertain variable, and analysis results have uncertainty, too. In this study, sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effect of conductivity, specific heal and pouring temperature. The results show that lower conductivity and higher specific heat increase the maximum temperature and maximum tensile stress. The structure with internal restraint is mostly influenced by the change of conductivity and specific heat.

  • The mobility method of dynamically loaded journal bearings was applied to optimize the lubrication of the main journal bearing of the crank press. The effects of oil viscosity, temperature bearing clearance, length, the existence of the circumferential groove, peak press force, and crank rpm were examined. From the results of the minimum film thickness and the maximum film pressure, some of the factors could be optimized, and the degrees of the beneficial and detrimental effects of the others could be estimated.

  • Turbulence on the journal bearing operation is examined. And the thermal variability is studied for isothermal, convective and adiabatic conditions on the walls within some degree of journal misalignment. An efficient algorithm for the solution of the coupled turbulent Reynolds and energy equations is used to examine the effects of the various factors. The calculation data of turbulent analysis are compared with the ones of laminar analysis. Heat convection is found to play but a small role in determining friction and load. The friction distribution patterns through inside a journal bearing now appear different with high values at the front part of the bearing due to the high speed and low temperature, and a sudden decrease past the pressure maximum.

  • Foil bearings have been successfully used for small high speed rotors, such as ACM(Air Cycle Machine), turbo charger, turbo compressor, high speed motor, etc. Recently advanced researches are concentrated on the high load capacity and the extreme temperature foil bearings to extend the application boundary. Some bearings are already adopted into cryogenic machines and micro gas turbines. In this paper, a foil journal bearing designed for high load capacity, which is under development, is introduced. The bearing is for the turbo refrigerator which has a rotor of 18${\~}$25 kgf rotating at 23,000${\~}$38,000 rpm. This application is well beyond conventional spectrum of foil bearings because the rotor is relatively heavy and the rotational speed is low. Therefore, the development is challenging. The foil bearing is a bump type, the size is 60mm in diameter and 50mm in length, the operating fluid is air and rotational speed is 26,000 rpm. In-house software was developed and used for bearing design. Tested maximum load capacity is 80kgf, 0.62 in terms of load capacity coefficient, and testing is being continued.

  • To perform a cryogenic development test for Tribo-elements in a turbopump, a cryogenic bearing and seal test facility (BSTF) is designed and currently under construction in KARI. The working fluid is liquid nitrogen operating at a temperature $-197^{\circ}C$. The maximum operating pressure and volume flow rate of BSTF are 100 bar and 10 liters per second, respectively. The development tests of floating ring seals, inter-propellant seals (IPS) and cryogenic ball bearings in a turbopump will be performed using the BSTF. This paper briefly described design requirements and procedures of BSTF.

  • Surface texturing is widely applied to friction surfaces of various machine elements. Most of the theoretical studies have focused on isothermal (ISO) analyses which consider constant lubricant viscosity. However, there have been limited studies on the effect of oil temperature increase owing to viscous shear. Following the first part of the present study that investigated the effects of film-temperature boundary condition (FTBC) and groove number on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication characteristics of a surface-textured parallel thrust bearing with multiple rectangular grooves, this study focuses on the effect of groove depths. Current study numerically analyzes the continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations with temperature-viscosity-density relations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, FLUENT. The results of variation in temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions as well as load-carrying capacity (LCC) and friction force indicate that groove depth and FTBC significantly influence the temperature distribution and pressure generation. The LCC is maximum near the groove depth at which the vortex starts, smaller than the ISO result. For intense grooves, the LCC of THD may be larger than that from ISO. The frictional force decreases as the groove becomes deeper, and decreases more significantly in the case of THD. The study shows that groove depth significantly influences the THD lubrication characteristics of surface-textured parallel thrust bearings.
