  • Disasters are the phenomena that we have to prevent the occurrence in order to keep the safety to human lives and properties, and if occurred, we have to minimize the economic, social, and mental costs of the occurred disasters or incidents. This research analyzes the optimal location of fire stations in terms of served population maximization in Seoul. This research introduces "the maximal covering location problem(MCLP)," one of the optimization techniques, as the primary research method. This research also applies a geographic information system into spatial distribution analyses of existing fire stations and observed fire incidents. Results from the analyses show that the existing location of fire stations and branches need to be improved. The dispatch location of fire engines should be reconsidered for rapid services of fire fighting.

  • Local governments should try to resolve the inequality of living SOC (Social Overhead Capital) and construct spatial information on the location of living SOCs and optimal locations. This study analyzed the accessibility, equity, and optimal location of the living SOC, considering the research needs related to the living SOC. The target facility is core living facilities(a public library, a park, a culture center, and a public daycare center). The analysis area is Suwon city in Gyeonggi province, and the base year of the analysis is 2020. The study calculated accessibility per population in a microscopic neighborhood living area(200m×200m). The Gini coefficient was used to identify the regional disparity in accessibility among Dong regions. The optimal location was explored with the Maximal Covering Location Problem theory. As a result, spatial accessibility of facilities except for public daycare centers revealed a large gap between regions. Areas with excellent accessibility also showed significant variations in the facilities. The regional disparity in living SOC was the largest in culture centers, followed by parks, public daycare centers, and public libraries. The optimal locations for public libraries, parks, and culture centers are concentrated in the old downtown, while those of public daycare centers are found throughout Suwon city. The results of this study are the crucial contents of spatial planning for SOC supply in local governments. Therefore, follow-up studies will be able to refer to the analysis structure and results of the study.

  • This paper addresses the efficient facility placements to adopt a super WiFi network, taking significant considerations as the next generation 'information highway'. Since the super WiFi has a wider geographic coverage by utilizing the white spaces of TV broadcasting which are empty and available frequencies for the wireless communications, it would play an important role in releasing digital divide of the internet access for low populated or mountainous areas. The purpose of this paper is to explore systematic and efficient spatial plans for the super WiFi. For doing this, we applied optimal location covering models to Gurye-gun, Jeonlanamdo. From the application, we presented optimal locations for super WiFi facilities and significant analytical results, such as the tradeoff between the number of facilities and coverage and marginal coverage for establishing super WiFi network. The results of this research would be usefully utilized for decision makers who wish to adopt a super WiFi, to extend wireless networks in a city or build a regional infrastructure of wireless facilities.

  • Reconstruction of calvarial bone defects from congenital anomaly or from bone loss due to traumatic or neoplastic processes remains a significant problem in craniofacial surgery and neurosurgery. To facilitate bone regeneration, there have been many trials such as autologous bone graft or allograft, and the addition of demineralized bone matrix and matrix-derived growth factor. Guided bone regeneration is one of the methods to accelerate bone healing for calvarial bone defects especially in children. Pericranium is one of the most usable structure in bone regeneration. It protects the dura and sinus, and provides mechanical connection between bone fragments. It supplies blood to bone cortex and osteoprogenitor cells and enhances bone regeneration. For maximal effect of pericranium in bone regeneration, authors used pericranium as a flap for covering calvarial defects in surgeries of 11 craniosynostosis patients and achieved satisfactory results: The bone regeneration of original cranial defect in one year after operation was 74.6%(${\pm}8.5%$). This pericranial flap would be made more effectively by individual dissection after subgaleal dissection rather than subperiosteal dissection. In this article, we reviewed the role of pericranium and reported its usefulness as a flap in surgery of craniosynostosis to maximize bone regeneration.

  • Recently, there is becoming larger interest in the public practice centers equipped with advanced manufacturing equipment of industries that is difficult to have in all vocational high schools for strengthening practical education and technical education tailored to the Fourth Industrial Revolution in vocational high schools. In this study, using spatial optimization approaches, we explored the optimal location sets of the public practice centers of vocational high schools in Seoul for an illustration. For the proposed optimial location methods, P-median Problem (PMP) and Maximal Coverage Location (MCLP) were used because, when the public practice centers located in priority of large vocational high schools based on the number of students, it showed that the result is not minimizing the travel distance and maximizing the demand of the vocational high school students. This study found that the PMP can find the optimal location sets that minimize the travel distance of whole students. In addition, all students can be captured through locating five public practice centers by MCLP. It should be noted that the optimal locations of this study are limited in Seoul. However, the frame of this methodology applied in this study can be utilized to locate the public practice centers in other regions based on the spatial decision making.
