  • This paper has two main purposes, One is a scientific theory for the Hangul writing system. It is a mathematical model which is formulated a logical characteristics involved in the compositionality principle of Hun Min Jung Um[6], and is based on the traditional scientific methodology and theory. The other is an engineering model for the Hangul writing system. It has proven that the model is more theoretical and practical that the conventional models called Hangul automata. This paper also shows the reasons why Korean has a great national pride in Hangul[3]. Consequently, we suggest that Hangul writing system has a potential capability as an ultimate human interface connecting human, computer and information.

  • This paper presents the results of the numerical analysis on the behaviour of mooring system of offshore guyed tower. Finite element method is used and geometric nonlinearities are considered in the analysis of mooring line. The governing equilibrium equations are derived by the principle of virtual work, and modified Newton-Raphson method and Newmark-${\beta}$ method are employed in response calculations. The drag and inertia effects of fluid are included using a Morrison type equation. The influences of changing typical parameters like initial inclination and tension of line at the guy attachment point, the length of clump weight, its unit weight and the anchor line length are examined. The effects of idealising the clump weight as a point load(lumped clump weight) on the behaviour of mooring lines are also discussed. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity and capability of the mathematical formulation.

  • This paper considers the control model identification and H(sub)$\infty$ controller design for a tandem cold mill (TCM). In order to improve the performance of the existing automatic gauge control (AGC) system based on the Taylor linearized model of the TCM, a new mathematical model that can complement the Taylor linearized model is constructed by using the N4SID algorithm based on subspace method and the least squares algorithm based on ARX model. It is shown that the identified model had dynamic characteristics of the TCM than the existing Taylor linearized model. The H(sub)$\infty$ controller is designed to have robust stability to the system parameters variation, disturbance attenuation and robust tracking capability to the set-up value of strip thickness. The H(sub)$\infty$ servo problem is formulated and it is solved by using LMI (linear matrix inequality) techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of the proposed H(sub)$\infty$ controller.

  • This paper presents the theoretical development and qualitative evaluation of a new concept in the mathematical modeling of dynamic structures. We use both test data and analytical approximations to identify the parameters of an incomplete model. The model has the capability of predicting the response of the points of interest on the structure over the frequency range of interest and can be used to predict the changes in natural frequencies and normal modes due to structural changes. The theory was tested by running simulated tests on a relatively simple structure, identifying the parameters of the incomplete model, and using this model to predict the effects on frequency and mode shapes of several mass and stiffness changes. The conditions of the tests were varied by selecting different numbers of points of measurement, varying the frequency range, and by including assumed measurement error. It is recommended that the theoretical development be continued and that applications to more complex structures be carried out in order to develop a better understanding of the limitations and capabilities of the method. A successful, more definitive sevaluation could lead to immediate practical applications.

  • This paper presents a novel range-free localization algorithm based on quantum particle swarm optimization. The proposed algorithm is capable of estimating the distance between two non-neighboring sensors for multi-hop heterogeneous wireless sensor networks where all nodes' communication ranges are different. Firstly, we construct a new cumulative distribution function of expected hop progress for sensor nodes with different transmission capability. Then, the distance between any two nodes can be computed accurately and effectively by deriving the mathematical expectation of cumulative distribution function. Finally, quantum particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to improve the positioning accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior in the localization accuracy and efficiency when used in random and uniform placement of nodes for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks.

  • This paper introduces a four-Pole Lorentz force type self-bearing motor in which a new winding configuration is proposed to enable the sing1e winding to function both as a synchronous PM motor and as a magnetic bearing. The Lorentz force type has some good points such as the linearity of control force, freedom from flux saturation, and high efficiency, unlike conventional self-bearing motors using a reluctance force. And also, compared with the previously proposed eight-pole type, this four-pole self-bearing motor is more profitable for high rotational speed. In this paper, mathematical expressions of torque and radial force in the proposed self-bearing motor are derived to show that they can be separately controlled regardless of rotational speed and time. For verification of the theory, a prototype is made, where a ring-shape outer rotor is actively controlled in two radial directions while the other motions are passively stable supposing the radial stability. Through some experiments. it is shown that the proposed scheme can provide high capability and feasibility for a small high-speed self-bearing motor.

  • Staff scheduling is an important area, both from an academic and industrial point of view. It has become increasingly important as business becomes more service oriented and cost conscious in a global environment. There has been a lot of study to develop new and efficient staff scheduling models and methods. The purpose of this paper is not to develop new theoretical results but to develop a comprehensive user-friendly staffing model that can be applied to the real-world practice. The developed staffing software, OptStaff, provides the optimal configuration of the customer support center including the selection of customer support center locations, the allocation of staffs to each selected location, and schedules of staffs, so as to minimize the total cost while maximizing the customer satisfaction level. OptStaff also has capability to do scenario analysis by varying the levels of parameters and to create a variety of graphs and reports with user-friendly interfaces.

  • In this study, the shallow water equations on the sphere is simulated by the proposed method which has high spatial resolution and is based on the CIP(Cubic Interpolated Pseudoparticle) method. The governing equations are approximated on the longitude-latitudinal coordinate system. To avoid the problems resulting from the convergence of the meridians toward high-latitude and singularities on the poles, the semi-Lagrangian and finite volume method are employed. in addition, the CIP method is employed to solve the advection equations and is extended to apply on the equations in the polar coordinate system. The mathematical formulation and numerical results are also described. To verify of the efficiency, accuracy and capability of proposed algorithm, the standard test cases proposed bv Williamson et. al are simulated and the results are compared with other results. As a result, it is found that the present scheme gives a good properties in preserving shapes of solution and settles the pole problems in solving the shallow water equations on the sphere.

  • The goal of this research is the shape design of the valve using a computer simulation. For an analysis a basic mathematical model describing compression cycle is considered as consisting of five sets of coupled equations. These are the volume equation (kinematics), valve dynamic equation (dynamics), ideal gas equation (thermodynamics), Bernoulli equation (fluid dynamics), and dynamic equation of fluid particle based on Helmholtz equation (acoustics). Valve motion is made by the superposition of free vibration modes obtained by the finite element method. That is, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors are the sufficient modeling factors fur the valve in the simulation program. Thus, to design a shape of the valve, shape design sensitivity through chain-ruled derivatives is considered from two sensitivity coefficients, one is the design sensitivity of the capability of compressor with respect to the eigenvalues of the valve, and the other is the design sensitivity of the eigenvalue with respect to the shape change of the valve. In this research, the continuum design sensitivity analysis concepts are used for the latter.

  • Active control of on-orbit spacecraft jitter is a significant problem for future spacecraft mission requiring stringent pointing performance. Jitter is major disturbance source degrading payload pointing performance. Both passive and active jitter isolation techniques have been studied during the last decade. We present active jitter isolation for a model device in this work. The device provides active control capability by 3 degree-of-freedom control of payload in feedback control strategy. Mathematical modeling of the device is pursued which is naturally used for a baseline controller design. Simulation results are used to validate the designed control law.
