A Study on freshmen's achievements for grade point average among college entrance types in natural science or engineering (입시전형별 이공계 신입생의 대학수학 성취도 비교 분석 - 2012년 M 대학교 이공계 신입생을 중심으로 -)

  • In this paper, we analyzed the freshmen's achievements on general mathematics their GPA based on 'basic mathematics diagonal test score' among college entrance types in natural science or engineering. Also, we studied the achievements of students who were not passed the 'Basic Mathematics Diagonal Test (BMDT)' and had to take supplementary lessons to improve their mathematics abilities four times a week during the first semester of academic year 2012 in Mokpo National University. We found the followings; first, freshmen were accepted by the university through the regular admission have a higher level of academic achievement compared other type admission. Second, freshmen's academic achievement in the first semester has significant meaningful effect on their academic achievement in the second semester. Finally, there are correlations between achievements of general mathematics and a curriculum of freshmen who were passed test after taking supplementary lessons.

Harriot's algebraic symbol and the roots of equation (Harriot(1560-1621) 의 대수기호와 방정식의 근)

  • Thomas Harriot(1560-1621) introduced a simplified notation for algebra. His fundamental research on the theory of equations was far ahead of that time. He invented certain symbols which are used today. Harriot treated all answers to solve equations equally whether positive or negative, real or imaginary. He did outstanding work on the solution of equations, recognizing negative roots and complex roots in a way that makes his solutions look like a present day solution. Since he published no mathematical work in his lifetime, his achievements were not recognized in mathematical history and mathematics education. In this paper, by comparing his works with Viete and Descartes those are mathematicians in the same age, I show his achievements in mathematics.

  • This study is to explore the ways in which the affective characteristics of Korean middle school students have been developed and the ways in which they have an effect on their mathematics achievements by using TIMSS (the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) data of 1995, 1999, and 2003. In addition, this study investigates the differences in affective variables between boys and girls toward mathematics. The result of the study indicates that the affective characteristics of Korean middle school students have changed a little, but that its effect on mathematics achievement increased a lot from 1995 to 2003. This study also shows that the Korean students study mathematics to get a job than to enter a university. However, girls have come to study it harder before going to college and it seems to have an impact on their mathematics scores; this happened in 1999. So we can infer from it that the decreasing in the difference between boys and girls in mathematics achievement may have been influenced by the girls' learning motivation to go to college. Lastly, it should be said that another analysis is needed to find out the reason for the devaluation of the importance of mathematics among the Korean middle school students.

Effects of Math Lessons Based on Constructivism Ideas on Learners' Achievements - With Focus on The Area of Fractions for 4th Graders - (구성주의에 바탕을 둔 학습자 중심 수업을 받은 학생들의 학업성취도 - 초등학교 4학년 분수 영역을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of the research is to assure the effect of learner-centered instruction driven from the constructivism. The school in participation of the research is one of them called "achievement increase intensive school". Quasi-experimental design is applied for the research. Some conclusions were drawn from the research. Experimental group' achievements of both "learned contents" and "none learned contents" were more superior than ones gained from comparative group with statistically significant difference. The results implied that learner-centered instruction is effective for students who have low achievements from standards tests.

  • In this paper, we designed an open class teaching model in level-based team arrangements. In this way, teaching lesson plans were newly developed in order to teach students in open classroom environments. Both teachers and students required enough time to be acquainted with the new approach. However, empirical data analyses of mid-term and final examinations as well as survey data mathematical achievements indicated that most of the students have shown interests in mathematical activities and confidences on their mathematical abilities. Furthermore, there were few students who seemed to be isolated from mathematical activities. In particular, most students didn't seem to get lower grades than expected from other teachers who hesitated to apply the new model.

  • My suggestions to the teachers on the basis of my research are as follows: 1. A mathematical curriculum in high school requires an intuitive understanding. I'm sure we can not only improve the student's intuition and imagination by Euler's insight and intellectual investigation, but also induce motive and interest in mathematical learning by increasing the inquiry activities. Therefore, I suggest that we take advantage of teaching aids available from this research by processing the units in the mathematical textbook. 2. We can feel the beauty of mathematics by Euler's symbols and simple formulas. We must take pride in teaching mathematics because the mathematical insight is very useful in the inqury process. 3. We have to model ourselves after Euler's spirit of inquiry and energetic activities.

A STUDY ON PROBLEMS OF STATISTICS TEACHING TO USE COMPUTER PROGRAM

  • As students have been familiar to Internet or media which has big visual effects rather than letters, they preferred the class in computer lab to theoretical class. The class in computer lab showed all the students good reactions in concern and interest. Statistics achievements of high level students in 2008 became better than that in 2007 but those of low level students became worse than that in 2007. I analyze the reason why the achievements of low level students have become worse. The purpose of this study is to supplement of the trouble of the class in computer lab and find out a better teaching and develop mathematics education's satisfaction and qualification.

Ability and Creativity : Their Role in Science and Technology

  • In addition to exceptional abilities and domain-specific aptitudes, frequently creativity potentials are used to explain high achievements in science and technology. In the Guilford tradition, research focuses increasingly on convergent versus divergent thinking, that is, a suspected dichotomy between intelligence and creativity. Despite important insights from this about relationship of ability and creativity, a number of important questions remain unanswered. These relate not only to conceptualization and measurement problems regarding the hypothetical constructs "scientific ability" and "creativity", but also their diagnosis and nurturance in childhood and adolescence. It would appear that, in view of current research paradigms, the role of ability and creativity needs to be redefinded in order to more reliably predict and explain excellent achievements in science and technology. Advances are mostly expected from synthetic approaches. Thus, I will be presenting new theoretical models and empirical research results. Finally, consequences for the prediction and promotion of mathematical-scientific and technical talents will be discussed including the consideration of sex-related problems.

A Comparative Study on the Relation between Using Calculators in Math Lessons and Mathematics Achievement of Elementary School Students (초등학교 수학 수업에서 계산기 사용에 대한 국가별 비교)

  • Current mathematics curriculum of South Korea suggests that students learn mathematics in school with calculators except that the aim of the math lessons is to achieve calculation skills, but we can't be sure that elementary school students use calculators in math lessons of school. Actually we don't have enough data to identify how many elementary school students use calculators in math lessons. The aims of this study are to compare the ratio of elementary school students using calculators in math lessons of school between 20 countries and to analyse the relation between using calculators in math lessons and the achievements of math through $4^{th}$ grade mathematics test of TIMSS 2015. The results of this study are two. One is that generally $4^{th}$ grade students did not use calculators in math lessons. The other result is that generally there is no relation between using calculators in math lessons and the achievements of the math test through $4^{th}$ grade mathematics test of TIMSS 2015. Only in Hong Kong SAR, students without using calculators have higher achievements than students using calculators. In England and USA, students using calculators have higher achievements than students without using calculators. Finally, researcher in this study suggests some implications on using calculator in elementary schools.

A classification analysis of students from multicultural families based on their mathematics achievement over time (다문화학생의 수학학업성취도 변화와 계층분류)

  • Recently, the number of multicultural families has significantly increased in Korea, and this trend creates a need to understand how successfully students from multicultural families achieve their mathematics learning. To understand and predict the changes in mathematics learning achievement of these students over time, we conducted in this study a latent growth mixture model analysis. The study findings show that the majority (92%) of the students from multicultural families experience a decrease in their mathematics achievement over time as their grade level goes up. It was found, in particular, that female students are likely to have lower initial achievements and rapid decline over time more than male students and that the decline over time was more severe for female students than their male counterparts. The findings of this study convey several implications on the how to support the students from multicultural families. First, the result of this study was different from the outcomes of previous studies that presented the income of the household and the education level of the students' parents as major factors that determine the academic achievement of the students from multicultural families. Furthermore, the study indicates the need for more research to identify variables related to the mathematical achievements of the students from multicultural families and the need to use these research findings to develop public support plans for the students from multicultural families.
