The main purpose of this study was to examine pathways from interparental conflict to adolescents' problem behavior through maternal support and control and/or quality of peer relationship. A sample of 340 high school students (166 boys and 174 girls) in Incheon completed questionnaires on interparental conflict, maternal support and control, quality of peer relationship, and problem behavior. Data were analyzed by means of structural equation modeling. The results demonstrated that interparental conflict had a direct influence in both internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors, indicating that adolescents who perceived higher levels of interparental conflict had more problem behaviors. Regarding pathways from interparental conflict to problem behavior through maternal support and control and/or quality of peer relationships, adolescents perceiving higher levels of interparental conflict reported higher maternal psychological control and lower support and behavioral control. This was followed by a lower level of quality in terms of their peer relationships; the lower quality of peer relationships resulted in more adolescent problem behaviors. These results indicate that interparental conflict and maternal support and control play crucial roles in the development of internalizing and externalizing problem behavior, respectively.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of maternal materialism and parenting on materialism in adolescents. Moreover, the relative significance of maternal materialism and parenting materialism in adolescents was also explored. The study subjects were 199 (98 male, 101 female) high school students in Seoul and their mothers. The following are the major findings. 1) Maternal materialism was not related with male adolescents' materialism but was with female adolescents'. 2) Maternal support, and open communication were negatively related with female adolescents' materialism while maternal control, and permissiveness were positively related. On the other hand, only maternal control was positively related with male adolescents' materialism. 3) Stepwise regression analysis revealed that maternal support, followed by maternal materialism, was the most important variable affecting female adolescents'. However, for male adolescents, maternal control was the only one variable affecting their materialism.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status, maternal involvement in learning, parenting behavior and children's self-determination motivation. The participants of this study consisted of 333 fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school children and their mothers living in Seoul. The results of this study indicated that mothers with a higher educational attainment reported greater autonomy support behavior and involvement in their offspring's learning. Conversely, mothers with low incomes were found to use psychological control and were also found to be involved in learning to a lesser degree. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that children whose mothers were less involved in learning showed higher levels of self-determination motivation. Additionally, maternal support for autonomy and psychological control had a number of moderating effects on the association between maternal involvement in learning and the child's self-determination motivation. Specifically, children tended to exhibit significantly lower levels of self-determination motivation when mothers were more involved in learning among those who received less support in terms of autonomy. Conversely, children had significantly higher levels of self-determination motivation when mothers were less involved in learning when it came to those children who were under less psychological control.
The purpose of this study is to investigate what antecedents and how much these antecedents have an effect on mother's parenting behaviors. The subjects of this study are 251 mothers who have child 3 to 6 year old in Daegu and Kyugbook province. The data are analysed through frequency, percentile, mean, standard deviation, Cronbach's α, Pearson's correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The major findings of this study are as follows:First, child's sex, temperament, and behavior problem, mother's parenting self-efficacy, and marital satisfaction and satisfaction of social support affect maternal affectionate parenting behavior. Second, child's temperament, mother's personality and parenting self-efficacy, and satisfaction of social support affect maternal control parenting behavior Third, mother's variables, especially parenting self-efficacy, have great effect on maternal affectionate parenting behavior than any other variables have. Forth, mother's variables, especially personality and efficacy of parenting, have great effect on maternal control parenting behavior than any other variables have.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the mediating roles of mothers' psychological well-being and support/control in the relationship between maternal child-related stress and adolescents' school adjustment. Participants were 389 3rd grade middle school students and their mothers. Mothers completed questionnaires about child-related stress and psychological well-being. Adolescents completed scales of maternal controlling/supportive parenting and school adjustment. Results indicated that a direct effect of mothers' child-related stress on adolescents' school adjustment was not significant. However, mothers' psychological well-being and support/control mediated the relations between child-related stress and adolescents' school adjustment. A higher level of child-related stress in mothers was associated with a lower level of psychological well-being, followed by a lower level of adolescents' school adjustment. Mothers who reported a higher level of child-related stress tended to be less supportive and more controlling, which led to a lower level of school adjustment. These findings suggest the need for considering both maternal characteristics and parenting in explaining adolescents' school adjustment.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of social support intervention on mood and maternal confidence of premature's mothers. The social support intervention is known to induce improved mood state and provide information on caretaking so as to increase the maternal confidence in the mother of a premature. To systematically investigate its effect, this study employed a nonequivalent randomized post-repeated quasi-experimental design. The intervention was given individually to mothers of prematures five times spanning five weeks. The sample consisted of the 50 mothers (experimental 27, control 23) of a premature. The data were collected using the structured questionaires twice as post tests. Various instruments were used in this study. The POMS developed by Lee(1990) was used to measure the mothers' mood state, Mother and Baby Scales by Wolke et al (1987). The results are as follows: 1. For the hypothesis test to see the effect of the social support intervention, the mean of the experimental group and the control group was compared by means of t-test and the following results are obtained. Hypothesis I. "The mood state of mothers with social support intervention is more positive than that of the mothers without such intervention." was not statistically supported and thus discarded (t=.799, p=.429). However the mean scores were 49.68 and 51.38 for the experimantal and control group, respectively, indicating more positive mood for the experimental group. Hypothesis II. "The maternal confidence of mothers with social support intervention is higher than that of the mothers without the tervention." was statistically supported (t=3.667, p=.001). 2. The mean score of the mood state was highest before discharge (52.29), meaning most negative, declined to 49.68 shortly after the discharge, again increased a bit to 50.07 at four weeks after the discharge, and stabilized to 49.22 around six weeks after the discharge. On the other hand the mean score of the maternal confidence was continuously increased with time. In view of the above results, it is concluded that the social support intervention with a preprogrammed protocol has the definite positive effect on increasing the maternal confidence and positive effect on improving mother's mood state.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and evaluate a Web-based program for the maternal role of primiparas who use the internet. Method: The study process was a systems requirements analysis, design and development of a program, program testing by experts, program implementation, and program evaluation by users. A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. The data was collected from October 5th, 2002 to February 24th, 2003. Result: 1. Based on inquiries into mothers' needs, a Web-based support program was developed. The program was then modified from feedback received from experts. 2. In a sub-scale analysis of mothers' perception of a baby, amenability and persistence was significantly higher in the intervention group. The differences in the mean score of maternal self-confidence and maternal satisfaction were significant. 3. Cyber counseling was done for a total of 73 cases and the most frequent problems for counseling were feeding and nutrition (28.8%), followed by baby care, and health problems. Conclusion: It was proven that a Web-based support program provided appropriate support to primiparas and was effective in promoting their maternal role. Therefore, this study suggests that a Web-based support program for primiparas can become a powerful nursing intervention on virtually all mother and infant health concerns.
Purpose: A quasi-experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of a home visiting discharge education program on the maternal self-esteem, attachment, postpartum depression and family function in 35 mothers of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) infants. Methods: Twenty-three mothers in the intervention group received the home visiting discharge education while 12 mothers in the control group received the routine, hospital discharge education. Baseline data was collected in both groups one day after delivery. The intervention group received the home visiting discharge education while the control group did the routine hospital-based discharge education. The questionnaire including the data on maternal self-esteem, attachment, postpartum depression and family function were collected within 1 week after the discharge by mail. Results: The scores of maternal self-esteem, and attachment were significantly increased, and the postpartum depression and the family function score were decreased after the home visiting discharge education in intervention group. There were no changes in these variables before and after the routine hospital-based discharge education in control group. Conclusion: These results support the beneficial effects of home visiting discharge education on the maternal role adaptation and family function of the mothers of NICU infants.
Purpose: The research was conducted to investigate the experience of maternal role attainment of mothers of premature infants admitted in NICU and to conceptualize the phenomena. Method: The grounded theory method was utilized for data collection and analysis. 8 mothers of premature infants were selected and in-depth interview was performed. Paradigm model was utilized for data analysis and presentation. Result: The central category was 'unstable maternal identity'. The properties of the core phenomena was 'ambivalent feeling to baby' 'negative emotion' 'commitment to baby'. The loss of control due to premature delivery was the causal condition. contextual condition was the 'perceived threats' due to severity of the premature infant and uncerainty of the baby's life. The mother's health status, economic status, and familial and social support was recognized as intervening conditions during the process of maternal role attainment. The strategic action/interactions were emotion-focused coping, reappraisal of the situation, problem-focused coping, and information seeking. The consequence was the maternal role attainment with competence and expectation. Conclusion: The process of maternal role attainment was affected by threats due to severity of the baby and intervening factors and interaction strategy. Further research is recommended to develop adequate intervention method during the process of maternal role attainment.
The main purpose of this study was to identify the effect of phone counseling carried out to promote the role of the primiperous mothers. The data were collected from march 20 to may 30, 1998. The subjects for the study were the mothers of 60 first bon neonates admitted to and discharged from Sam-sung Medical Center's neonatal ward. Thirty subjects were assigned to the experimental group and thirty to the control group. A measure of maternal identity as well as level of self confidence in taking care of an infant after giving birth was taken. Informational supportive nursing was then provided to the mothers through phone counseling for a total of four times at 2~3 days, 7~8days, 12∼13days and 18∼1days after discharged. The level of self confidence in taking care of an infant was then remeasured. The control group was not provided with supportive nursing through phone counseling instead the level of confidence in taking care of an infant was measured at 3 weeks. Taking previous study documentary evidence into consideration the researcher developed a supportive nursing telephone counseling program that provided both informational and emotional support suitable to primiperous mothers. A semantic differential scale developed according to Osgood and translated and adapted by Koh Hyo-Jung was used as the maternal self identity measurement tool. The tool used to measure self confidence in taking care of infant was the developed by Bak Mi Suk which includes 13 items from Pharis's self confidence scale The data were analyzed using χ²-test, t-test and paired t-test. The result of the study are as follows 1. First hypothesis The level of self confidence in taking care of an infant for the group of primiparas who received phone counseling in the postpartum period would be higher than that of the primiparas who did not receive phone counselling : As the experimental group's level of self confidence in taking care infants was significantly higher than that of the control group this hypothesis is accepted 2. Second hypothesis The level of maternal identity will be higher for the group of primiparas who received phone counseling than that of primiparas who did not received phone counseling As the experimental group's level of maternal identity was significantly higher than that of the control group this hypothesis is accepted In looking at the results of the study as a whole, it can be concluded that emotional and informational nursing support provided through phone counselling is an effective strategy in promoting the role of new mothers.
