  • In this study, a conceptual pyroprocess flowsheet has been devised by combining several dry-type unit processes; its applicability as an alternative fuel cycle technology was analyzed. A key point in the evaluation of its applicability to the fuel cycle was the recovery yield of fissile materials from spent fuels as well as the proliferation resistance of the process. The recovery yields of uranium and transuranic elements (TRU) were obtained from a material balance for every unit process composing the whole pyroprocess. The material balances for several elemental groups of interest such as uranium, TRU, rare earth, gaseous fission products, and heat generating elements were calculated on the basis of the knowledge base that is available from domestic and foreign experimental results or technical information presented in open literature. The calculated result of the material balance revealed that uranium and TRU could be recovered at 98.0% and 97.0%, respectively, from a typical PWR spent fuel. Furthermore, the anticipated TRU product was found to emit a non-negligible level of $\gamma$-ray and a significantly higher level of neutrons compared to that of a typical plutonium product obtained from the PUREX process. The results indicate that the product from this conceptual pyroprocessing should be handled in a shielded cell and that this will contribute favorably to retaining proliferation resistance.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate and optimize an effectiveness process for the recovery of Pd from the spent Pd/C catalyst by the process of hydrogenation of maleic anhydride over Pd/C. Pd solution recovered from Pd/C catalyst was used to prepare Pd/C catalysts. Their characteristics were compared to those of Pd/C catalyst prepared by using a reagent grade precursor solution. Pd in the spent catalyst was leached by the modified process with dry and wet methods to obtain the high recovery ratio of Pd. The burn-out of carbon in the spent Pd/C catalyst was carried out in the rage of $600-900^{\circ}C$. Pd content of carbonized catalyst was confirmed by XRF and ICP. Pd was extracted from carbonized spent catalysts with acid solutions of 1,2 and 4 M HCl at a leaching temperature of $90^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The high recovery ratio of Pd was shown as 92.4% that leached in 4 M HCl. Also Pd/C catalysts were prepared by using the leached solution and the reagent grade of $H_2PdCl_4$ as a precursor solution and the characteristics were analyzed by XRD, CO-chemisorption and FE-TEM. As a result, the dispersion of the catalyst prepared by using the leached solution was 34.6%, which was found to be equal to or more than that of the Pd/C catalyst prepared by the reagent grade precursor solution.

  • One of the methods currently being investigated as a possible non-intrusive diagnostic tool for condition monitoring of power transformer and cable is the recovery voltage measurement, which will be improving the ability to detect the content of water concentration and the ageing process in the insulation system and may thus be an indicator of insulation quality and its ageing status. The polarization phenomenon was studied using RVM with oil-paper samples. In order to interpret its mechanism, the Extended Debye model was introduced. With different circuit parameters, various simulation results were gotten. Furthermore, with the test samples of different ageing condition, measurements are accomplished in the lab. On the basis of this experiment as well as theoretical analysis, correlations between polarizations and ageing were analyzed.

  • Die desig for manufacturing hooks from steel wires has been depended on empirical procedures based on trial and error method. To design die, at first the curvature and bending angle of hook are computed by using AutoCAD and developed program which is composed of Visual Basic. Then spring back should be considered because the elastic recovery of material is very important in bending process. In this study, bending analysis of elastic-plastic materials is applied to predict curvature of hook and spring back. Therefore, systematic procedure of die design for bending hook is achieved to consider elastic recovery in terms of hook shapes. Experimental results are good agreement with calculated results.

  • The Louisiana crawfish industry comprises the largest concentration of crustacean aquaculture in the United States. Processing plants throughout the culture region annually generate as much as 80 million pounds of peeling waste during recovery of the 15% (by weight) edible tail meat. A commercial oil extraction process for recovery of carotenoid astaxanthin from crawfish waste has been developed. Crawfish pigment in its various forms finds applications as a source of red intensifying agents for use in aquaculture and poultry industries. Crawfish shell, separated in the initial pigment extraction step, is an excellent source of chitin. Applicable physicochemical procedures for isolation of chitin from crawfish shell and its conversion to chitosan have been developed. Crawfish chitosan has been demonstrated to be both an effective coagulant and ligand-exchange column material , respectively, for recovery of valuable organic compounds from seafood processing wastewater.

  • A Quench in cable-in-conduit (CIC) conductors is often initiated by a disturbance such as strand motion that generates a highly localized normal zone in a strand or a few strands of the CIC conductors. The localized normal zone causes current and heat transfer between a disturbed strand and neighboring strands. Electrical and thermal contact characteristics between strands thus have an effect on the transient stability of the CIC conductors. In this paper the effect of contact characteristics between strands on the CIC conductor stability is presented based on the measured heat transfer characteristics of supercritical helium (SHe) for the local heating. The quench and recovery processes of the strands for the abrupt and highly localized disturbance are analyzed at the boundary between quench and recovery.
