  • Fiber waviness is one of manufacturing defects encountered frequently in thick composite structures. It affects significantly on the behavior as well as strength of thick composites. Thick composites with fiber waviness have two kinds of nonliearity. One is material nonlinearity, and the other is geometrical nonliearity due to fiber waviness. There are only a few studies that have considered both material and geometrical nonlinearities. In this paper, a FEA model was proposed to predict nonlinear behavior and strength of thick composites with fiber waviness.

Design of automotive inner panel by sectional forming analysis (단면성형 해석에 의한 자동차 내부 판넬의 설계)

  • A finite element program was developed using line elements for simulating the stretch/draw forming operation of an arbitrarily-shaped plane-strain section. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation is employed, introducing a minimum plastic work path assumption for each time step. Geometric and material nonlinearities are also considered within each time step. The finite element equation is based on the mesh-normal, which compatibly describes arbitrary tool surfaces and FEM meshes without depending on the explicit spatial derivatives of tool surfaces. The membrane approximation is adopted under the plane stress assumption. The sheet material is assumed to obey a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive law. The developed program was tested in the die-tryout of typical automotive inner panels. In order to determine a single friction coefficient and boundary length, FEM results and measurements of thinning for a stretched section of final die were compared. After finding analysis parameters, the sheet forming operations of original and final die designs were simulated. Excellent agreement between measured and computed thickness strains was obtained and the developed program was able to identify die designs which were rejected during die tryout.

A Study on the Algorithm for Nonlinear Dynamic Response Analysis of Shell Structure (쉘 구조물의 비선형 동적응답 해석을 위한 Algorithm에 관한 연구)

  • The main intention of this paper is to develop and compare the algorithm based on finite element procedures for nonlinear transient dynamic analysis which has combined effects of material and geometric nonlinearities. Incremental equilibrium equations based on the principle of virtual work are derived by the finite element approach. For the elasto - plastic large deformation analysis of shells and the determination of the displacement-time configuration under time-varying loads, the explicit, implicit and combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is adopted. In the time structure is selected and the results are compared with each others. Isoparametric 8-noded quadrilateral curved elements are used for shell structure in the analysis and for geometrically nonlinear elastic behaviour, a total Lagrangian coordinate system was adopted. On the other hands, material nonlinearity is based on elasto-plastic models with Von-Mises yield criteria. Thus, the combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is benefit in general case of shell structure, which is the result of this paper.

  • ;Recently the sheet forming simulation technology revealed great progress in the sense of practical application in the automotive, electric/electronics and aviation/space industries. The goal of sheet forming simulation is to embedded in the design engineering system which is consisted by the analysis and synthesis modules. This design simulation system predicts the slackness of sheet and estimate the formability, and search the optimum material/forming/structure conditions. This OVER-ALL OPTIMUM DESIGN can be classified as follow; 1. ANALYZING PROCEDURE: Numerical simulation based on nonlinear theories -geometry, material and friction nonlinearities- 2. OPTIMIZATION PROCEDURE: Optimum design based on mathematical programing and AI technologies, those are implemented in CAD/CAM/CAE System - Concurrent Engineering System-.   • The purpose of this study is to develop of unbonded tendon model considering time-dependent behavior. In this paper, a numerical model for unbanded tendon is proposed based on the finite element method, which can represent straight or curved unbonded tendon behavior. This model and time-dependent material model are used to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of unbonded prestressed concrete structures. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of concrete structures was used. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and models for reinforcements and tendons in the concrete. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. It accounts for the aging, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressing steel. The proposed unbonded tendon model and numerical method for time-dependent behavior of unbonded prestressed concrete structures is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

Cracking behavior of RC shear walls subject to cyclic loadings

  • This paper presents a numerical model for simulating the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls subject to cyclic loadings. The material behavior of cracked concrete is described by an orthotropic constitutive relation with tension-stiffening and compression softening effects defining equivalent uniaxial stress-strain relation in the axes of orthotropy. Especially in making analytical predictions for inelastic behaviors of RC walls under reversed cyclic loading, some influencing factors inducing the material nonlinearities have been considered. A simple hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain relation of steel is also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively. To assess the applicability of the constitutive model for RC element, analytical results are compared with idealized shear panel and shear wall test results under monotonic and cyclic shear loadings.

  • In this paper, seismic energy response of inelastic steel structures under earthquake excitations is investigated. For this purpose, a numerical procedure based on nonlinear dynamic analysis is developed by considering material, geometric and connection nonlinearities. Material nonlinearity is modeled by the inversion of Ramberg-Osgood equation. Nonlinearity caused by the interaction between the axial force and bending moment is also defined considering stability functions, while the geometric nonlinearity caused by axial forces is described using geometric stiffness matrix. Cyclic behaviour of steel connections is taken into account by employing independent hardening model. Dynamic equation of motion is solved by Newmark's constant acceleration method in the time history domain. Energy response analysis of space frames is performed by using this proposed numerical method. Finally, for the first time, the distribution of the different energy types versus time at the duration of the earthquake ground motion is obtained where in addition error analysis for the numerical solutions is carried out and plotted depending on the relative error calculated as a function of energy balance versus time.

Finite Element Analysis for Plastic Large Deformation and Anisotropic Damage

  • An improved analysis model for material nonlinearity induced by elasto-plastic deformation and damage including a large strain response was proposed. The elasto-plastic-damage constitutive model based on the continuum damage mechanics approach was adopted to overcome limitations of the conventional plastic analysis theory. It can manage the anisotropic tonsorial damage evolved during the time-independent plastic deformation process of materials. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation for elasto-plastic damage coupling problems including large deformation, large rotation and large strain problems was completed to develop a numerical model which can predict all kinds of structural nonlinearities and damage rationally. Finally a finite element analysis code for two-dimensional plane problems was developed and the applicability and validity of the numerical model was investigated through some numerical examples. Calculations showed reasonable results in both geometrical nonlinear problems due to large deformation and material nonlinearity including the damage effect.

Construction stage analysis of fatih sultan mehmet suspension bridge

  • In this study, it is aim to perform the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element models of the bridge are modelled using SAP2000 program considering project drawing. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Because of the fact that the bridge has steel structural system, only prestressing steel relaxation is considered as time dependent material properties. The structural behaviour of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given with detail. It is seen that construction stage analysis has remarkable effect on the structural behaviour of the bridge.

  • In recent years, the use of fiber reinforced polymer composites has increased because of their unique features. They have been used widely in the aircraft and space industries, medical and sporting goods and automotive industries. Thanks to their beneficial and various advantages over traditional materials such as high strength, high rigidity, low weight, corrosion resistance, low maintenance cost, aesthetic appearance and easy demountable or moveable construction. In this paper, it is aimed to determine and compare the geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis results of footbridges using steel and glass fiber reinforced polymer composite (GFRP) materials. For this purpose, Halgavor suspension footbridge is selected as numerical examples. The analyses are performed using three identical footbridges, first constructed from steel, second built only with GFRP material and third made of steel- GFRP material, under static and dynamic loadings using finite element method. In the finite element modeling and analyses, SAP2000 program is used. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta criterion. The numerical results have indicated that the responses of the three bridges are different and that the response values obtained for the GFRP composite bridge are quite less compared to the steel bridge. It is understood that GFRP material is more useful than the steel for the footbridges.
