In this work, thermoelastic dynamic behavior of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) cylinders subjected to mechanical pressure loads, uniform temperature environment or thermal gradient loads is investigated by a mesh-free method. The material properties and thermal stress wave propagation of the nanocomposite cylinders are derived after solving of the transient thermal equation and obtaining of the time history of temperature field of the cylinders. The nanocomposite cylinders are made of a polymer matrix and wavy single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are assumed variable along the radial direction of the axisymmetric cylinder. Also, material properties of the polymer and CNT are assumed temperature-dependent and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite are estimated by a micro mechanical model in volume fraction form. In the mesh-free analysis, moving least squares shape functions are used to approximate temperature and displacement fields in the weak form of motion equation and transient thermal equation, respectively. Also, transformation method is used to impose their essential boundary conditions. Effects of waviness, volume fraction and distribution pattern of CNT, temperature of environment and direction of thermal gradient loads are investigated on the thermoelastic dynamic behavior of FG-CNTRC cylinders.
This paper presents the dynamic instability analysis of un-damped elastically supported piezoelectric functionally graded (FG) beams subjected to in-plane static and dynamic periodic thermomechanical loadings with uncertain system properties. The elastic foundation model is assumed as one parameter Pasternak foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. The piezoelectric FG beam is subjected to non-uniform temperature distribution with temperature dependent material properties. The Young's modulus and Poison's ratio of ceramic, metal and piezoelectric, density of respective ceramic and metal, volume fraction exponent and foundation parameters are taken as uncertain system properties. The basic nonlinear formulation of the beam is based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) with von-Karman strain kinematics. The governing deterministic static and dynamic random instability equation and regions is solved by Bolotin's approach with Newmark's time integration method combined with first order perturbation technique (FOPT). Typical numerical results in terms of the mean and standard deviation of dynamic instability analysis are presented to examine the effect of slenderness ratios, volume fraction exponents, foundation parameters, amplitude ratios, temperature increments and position of piezoelectric layers by changing the random system properties. The correctness of the present stochastic model is examined by comparing the results with direct Monte Caro simulation (MCS).
The dynamic output-feedback robust control method based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) method is presented for suppressing vibration response of a functionally graded material (FGM) beam with piezoelectric actuator/sensor layers in this paper. Based on the reduced model obtained by using direct mode truncation, the linear fractional state space representation of a piezoelectric FGM beam with material properties varying through the thickness is developed by considering both the inherent uncertainties in constitution material properties as well as material distribution and the model error due to mode truncation. The dynamic output-feedback robust H-infinity control law is implemented to suppress the vibration response of the piezoelectric FGM beam and the LMI method is utilized to convert control problem into convex optimization problem for efficient computation. In numerical studies, the flexural vibration control of a cantilever piezoelectric FGM beam is considered to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed control method. Compared with the efficient linear quadratic regulator (LQR) widely employed in literatures, the proposed robust control method requires less control voltage applied to the piezoelectric actuator in the case of same control performance for the controlled closed-loop system.
Vacuum interrupters that is used in various switchgear components such as circuit breakers, distribution switches, contactors, etc. spreads the arc uniformly over the surface of the contacts. The electrode of vacuum interrupters is used sintered Cu-Cr material satisfied with good electrical and mechanical characteristics. Because the closing velocity is 1-3m/s, the deformation of the material of electrodes depends on the strain rate and the dynamic behavior of the sintered Cu-Cr material is a key to investigate the impact characteristics of the electrodes. The dynamic response of the material at the high strain-rate is obtained from the split Hopkinson pressure bar test using cylinder type specimens. Experimental results from both quasi-static and dynamic compressive tests with the split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus are interpolated to construct the Johnson-Cook equation as the constitutive relation that should be applied to simulation of the dynamic behavior of electrodes. To evaluate impact characteristic of a vacuum interrupter, simulation is carried out with five parameters such as initial velocity, added mass of a movable electrode, wipe spring constant, initial offset of a wipe spring and virtual fixed spring constant.

Viscoelastic components for vibration isolation or shock absorption in automobiles, machines and buildings are often subject to a high level of static deformation. From the dynamic design point of view, it is requisite to predict dynamic complex stiffness of viscoelastic components accurately and efficiently. To this end, a systematic procedure for complex modulus measurement of the viscoelastic material under large static deformation is often required in the industrial fields. In this paper, dynamic test conditions and procedures for the viscoelastic material under small oscillatory load superimposed on large static deformation are discussed. Various standard test methods are investigated in order to select an adequate test methodology. The influence of fixed boundary condition in the compression tests upon complex stiffness are investigated and an effective correction technique is proposed. Then the uniaxial tension and compression tests are performed and its results are compared with analysis results from conventional constitutive models.

A specific experimental method, the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique has been widely used to determine the dynamic material properties under the impact compressive loading conditions with strain-rate of the order of 103/s~104/s. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of rubber materials widely used for the isolation of vibration from varying structures under dynamic loading are determined using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar technique.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the SDAR (solvent deasphaltene residue), which is obtained from the solvent deasphalting (SDA) process, as a pavement material. METHODS : The physical properties of the SDAR were evaluated based on its chemical composition, and asphalt mixtures with the SDAR were fabricated and used for the evaluation of mechanical properties. Firstly, the chemical composition of SARA (saturate, aromatic, resin and asphaltene) was analyzed using the TLC-FID (thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detector). Moreover, the basic material properties of the asphalt binder with the SDAR were evaluated by the penetration test, softening point test, ductility test, and PG (performance grade) grade test. The rheological properties of the asphalt binder with the SDAR were evaluated by the dynamic shear modulus ($G^*$) obtained using the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. Secondly, the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures with the SDAR were evaluated. The compactibility was evaluated using the gyratory compacter. Moreover, the tensile strength ratio (TSR) was used for evaluating the moisture susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures (i.e., susceptibility to pothole damage). The dynamic modulus $E^*$, which is a fundamental property of the asphalt mixture, obtained at different temperatures and loading cycles, was used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION : The SDAR shows stiffer and more brittle behavior than the conventional asphalt binder. As the application of the SDAR directly in the field may cause early failures, such as cracks on pavements, it should be applied with modifiers that can favorably modify the brittleness property of the SDAR. Therefore, if appropriate additives are applied on the SDAR, it can be used as a pavement material because of its low cost and strong resistance to rutting.

In this paper, a statistical calibration method is proposed in order to identify the variability of complex modulus for a rubber material due to operational temperature and experimental/model errors. To describe temperature- and frequency-dependent material properties, a fractional derivative model and a shift factor relationship are used. A likelihood function is defined as a product of the probability density functions where experimental values lie on the model. The variation of the fractional derivative model parameters is obtained by maximizing the likelihood function. Using the proposed method, the variability of a synthetic rubber material is estimated and applied to a rubber mount problem. The dynamic characteristics of the rubber mount are calculated using a finite element model of which material properties are sampled from Monte Carlo simulation. The calculated dynamic stiffnesses show very large variation.

A theoretical method is presented to investigate the thermoelastic and dynamic response of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates made up of metal and ceramic. The temperature is assumed to be constant in the plane of the plate and to vary in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependant, and vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains is adopted to formulate the theoretical model. The modal analysis technique is used to develop the analytic solutions of the dynamic problem. The effect of material compositions and temperature fields is examined. The present theoretical results are verified by comparing with those from finite element analysis by ANSYS.

In this paper, a new first shear deformation plate theory based on neutral surface position is developed for the static and the free vibration analysis of functionally graded plates (FGPs). Moreover, the number of unknowns of this theory is the least one comparing with the traditional first-order and the other higher order shear deformation theories. The neutral surface position for a functionally graded plate which its material properties vary in the thickness direction is determined. The mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness direction by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Based on the present shear deformation plate theory and the neutral surface concept, the governing equations are derived from the principle of Hamilton. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface based formulation. Numerical illustrations concern flexural and dynamic behavior of FG plates with Metal-Ceramic composition. Parametric studies are performed for varying ceramic volume fraction, length to thickness ratios. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
