This study is concerned with modeling an elastomer constitutive relation by utilizing the truncated Volterra series. Actual experimental data from the Instron Tester are obtained for combined input, i.e. constant strain rate followed by a constant strain input. These data are then estimated for step inputs and utilized for the truncated Volterra series models. One second order and one third order truncated Volterra series models have been employed to estimated the force-displacement relation which is one of the prominent properities to characterize the viscoelastic material. The third order Volterra series model has better results, compared with those of the second order Volterra series model.

Reactor pressure vessel (RPV) under severe accident conditions accompanied by core melting is exposed to direct high-temperature thermal loads. Understanding the creep behavior of the material is one of the most important factors for evaluating the structural integrity at these conditions. While damage evaluation studies have been conducted on critical structures of nuclear power plants through finite element (FE) analyses considering creep behavior, for accurate creep damage evaluation, constitutive equations considered in the FE analyses may have different results depending on the time hardening and strain hardening models as well as the tertiary creep consideration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the creep damage under severe accident conditions by using FE method for a representative domestic RPV material, SA508 Gr.3. The effect of material hardening models and constitutive equations which are the main variables were also investigated.
Numerical modeling for the safety-related equipment used in a nuclear power plant (i.e., cabinet facilities) plays an essential role in seismic risk assessment. A full finite element model is often time-consuming for nonlinear time history analysis due to its computational modeling complexity. Thus, this study aims to generate a simplified model that can capture the nonlinear behavior of the electrical cabinet. Accordingly, the distributed plasticity approach was utilized to examine the stiffness-degradation effect caused by the local buckling of the structure. The inherent dynamic characteristics of the numerical model were validated against the experimental test. The outcomes indicate that the proposed model can adequately represent the significant behavior of the structure, and it is preferred in practice to perform the nonlinear analysis of the cabinet. Further investigations were carried out to evaluate the seismic behavior of the cabinet under the influence of the constitutive law of material models. Three available models in OpenSees (i.e., linear, bilinear, and Giuffre-Menegotto-Pinto (GMP) model) were considered to provide an enhanced understating of the seismic responses of the cabinet. It was found that the material nonlinearity, which is the function of its smoothness, is the most effective parameter for the structural analysis of the cabinet. Also, it showed that implementing nonlinear models reduces the seismic response of the cabinet considerably in comparison with the linear model.

Finite element analysis using modern constitutive equation is one of the most general tools to simulate the deformation behavior and to predict the life of the structure. Constitutive equation becomes complicated so as to predict the material behavior more accurately than the classical models. Because of the complexity of constitutive model, numerical treatment becomes so difficult that the calculation should be verified carefully. One-element tests, simple tension or simple shear, are usually used to verify the accuracy of finite element analysis using complicated constitutive model. Since this test is mainly focused on the time integration scheme, it is also necessary to verify the equilibrium iteration using material stiffness matrix and to compare FE results with solution of structures. In this investigation, viscoplastic solution of thick walled cylinder was derived considering axial constraints and was compared with the finite element analysis. All the numerical solutions showed a good coincidence with FE results. This numerical solution can be used as a verification tool for newly developed FE code with complicated constitutive model.
Reinforced concrete is a complex material to be modeled in finite element domain. A proper material model is necessary to represent the nonlinear behaviour accurately. Though the nonlinear analysis of RC structures evolved long back, still an accurate and reliable model to predict the realistic behaviour of components are limited. It is observed from literature that there are three well-known models to represent the nonlinear behaviour of concrete. These models include Chu model (1985), Hsu model (1994) and Saenz model (1964).A new stress-strain model based on Weibull distribution has been proposed in the present study. The objective of the present study is to analyze a reinforced concrete beam under flexural loading by employing all the models. Nonlinear behaviour of concrete is considered in terms of stress vs. strain, damage parameter, tension stiffening behaviour etc. The ductility of the RC beams is computed by using deflection based and energy based concepts. Both deflection ductility and energy based ductility is compared and energy based concept is found to be in good correlation with the experiments conducted. The behavior of RC beam predicted using ABAQUS has been compared with the corresponding experimental observations. Comparison between numerical and experimental results confirms that these four constitutive models are reliable in predicting the behaviour of RC structures and any of the models can be employed for analysis.
It was clear from the former researches on reinforced concrete filled tubular steel (RCFT) structures that RCFT structures have different performance than concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) structures. However, despite of that, load-sharing ratio of RCFT is evaluating by the formula and range of CFT given by JSCE. Therefore, the aim of this investigation is to study the load-sharing ratio of RCFT columns subjected to axial compressive load by performing numerical simulations of RCFT columns with the nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) program - ADINA. To achieve this goal, firstly proper material constitutive models for concrete, steel tube and reinforcement are proposed. Then axial compression tests of concrete, RC, CFT, and RCFT columns are carried out to verify proposed material constitutive models. Finally, by the plenty of numerical analysis with small-sized and big-sized columns, load-sharing ratio of RCFT columns was studied, the evaluation formulas and range were proposed, application of the formula was demonstrated, and following conclusions were drawn: The FEA model introduced in this paper can be applied to nonlinear analysis of RCFT columns with reliable results; the load-sharing ratio evaluation formula and range of CFT should not be applied to RCFT; The lower limit for the range of load-sharing ratio of RCFT can be smaller than that of CFT; the proposed formulas for load-sharing ratio of RCFT have practical mean in design of RCFT columns.
Modified two-surface model (M2SM) is one of the steel elasto-plastic hysteretic constitutive models that consider both analysis accuracy and efficiency. However, when M2SM is used for complex strain history, sometimes the results are irrational due to the limitation of stress-strain path judgment. In this paper, the defect of M2SM was re-modified by improving the judgment of stress-strain paths. The accuracy and applicability of the improved method were verified on both material and structural level. Based on this improvement, the nonlinear time-history analysis was carried out for a deck-through steel arch bridge with a 200 m-long span under the ground motions of Chi-Chi earthquake and Niigata earthquake. In the analysis, we compared the results obtained by hysteretic constitutive models of improved two-surface model (I2SM) presented in this paper, M2SM and the bilinear kinematic hardening model (BKHM). Results show that, although the analysis precision of displacement response of different steel hysteretic models differs little from each other, the stress-strain responses of the structure are affected by steel hysteretic models apparently. The difference between the stress-strain responses obtained by I2SM and M2SM cannot be neglected. In significantly damaged areas, BKHM gives smaller stress result and obviously different strain response compared with I2SM and M2SM, and tends to overestimate the effect of hysteretic energy dissipation. Moreover, at some position with severe damage, BKHM may underestimate the size of seismic damaged areas. Different steel hysteretic models also have influences on structural damage evaluation results based on deformation behavior and low cycle fatigue, and may lead to completely different judgment of failure, especially in severely damaged areas.

Several typical hyper-elastic constitutive models that encompass both conventional and advanced ones were investigated for the application of instability problems, including the biaxial tension of a rubber patch and inflation of spherical or cylindrical balloons. The material models included the neo-Hookean model, Mooney-Rivlin model, Gent model, Arruda-Boyce model, Fung model, and Pucci-Saccomandi model. Analyses can be done using membrane equations with particular strain energy density functions. Among the typical strain energy density functions, Kearsley's bifurcation for the Treloar's patch occurs only with the Mooney-Rivlin model. The inflation equation is so generalized that a spherical balloon and tube balloons can be taken into account. From the analyses, the critical material parameters and limit points were identified for material models in terms of the non-dimensional pressure and inflation volume ratio. The bifurcation was then identified and found for each material model of a balloon. When the finite element method was used for the structural instability problems of rubber-like materials, some careful treatments required could be suggested. Overall, care must be taken not only with the analysis technique, but also in selecting constitutive models, particularly the instabilities.

High temperature flow behaviors of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C tool steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests on a Gleeble simulator. The compressive test temperature was varied from 850 to $1,150^{\circ}C$ with the strain rate ranges of 0.05 and $10s^{-1}$. The maximum height reduction was 45%. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrhenius-typed equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was proposed to simulate the hot deformation behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was also developed to compare with the constitutive model. It was concluded that the ANN model showed more accurate prediction compared with the constitutive model for describing the hot compressive behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel.
It is known that material properties, connection quality and manufacturing methods are among the important factors directly affecting the behavior of steel connections and hence steel structures. The possible performance differences between a fabricated connection and its computer model may cause critical design problems for steel structures. Achieving a reliable design depends, however, on how accurately the material properties and relevant constitutive models are considered to characterize the behavior of structures. Conventionally, the stress and strain fields in structural steel connections are calculated using the finite elements method with assumed material properties and constitutive models. Because the conventional strain gages allow the measurement of deformation only at one point and direction for specific time duration, it is not possible to determine the general characteristics of stress-strain distributions in connections after the laboratory performance tests. In this study, a new method is introduced to measure displacement distribution of simple steel welded connections under tension tests. The method is based on analyzing digital images of connection specimens taken periodically during the laboratory tension test. By using this method, displacement distribution of steel connections can be calculated with an acceptable precision for the tested connections. Calculated displacements based on the digital image correlation method are compared with those calculated using the finite elements method.
