Research of Chemical Properties of Soil and Growth Characteristics of Panax ginseng under Organic and Conventional Cultivation Systems in Korea (국내 유기와 관행 재배 인삼의 토양화학성과 생육 특성 조사)

  • The objective of the present study was to perform a comparative analysis of the chemical properties of the cultivation site soil and growth characteristics of organically and conventionally cultivated ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). Organically and conventionally cultivated ginseng samples (4-, 5-, and 6-year-old) were collected from 52 fields at 14 locations throughout Korea. The samples were collected over three years from 2013 to 2015, with the collection period between October and November of each year. In order to increase the yield of organically cultivated ginseng, the amount of nutrients was increased to match that of the conventional cultivation system, which highlights the need for proper management in accordance with the standards for chemical properties of soil. Growth duration of organic ginseng was ${\geq}60days$ shorter than that of conventional ginseng and its average yield per 1ha was 60% than that of conventional ginseng. Root weight of organically cultivated ginseng was approximately 54% that of conventionally cultivated ginseng. Rhizome diameter and body shape index of organically cultivated ginseng were lower than those of conventionally cultivated ginseng, indicating that organically cultivated ginseng was thinner and longer than conventionally cultivated ginseng. Root length was greater in 5-year-old conventionally cultivated ginseng with a low percentage of paddy-upland rotation fields. The number of rootlets was lower in 5- and 6-year-old organically cultivated ginseng with a high percentage of direct seeding cultivation. Dry weight was distinctly lower in 5- and 6-year-old organically cultivated ginseng with early defoliation than that of conventionally cultivated ginseng. Incidences of notched belly and root rot tended to be higher in conventional cultivation, with the incidence of notched belly being distinctly higher in 4- and 6-year-old roots and root rot being more prevalent in 5- and 6-year-old roots. Red discoloration and eelworm damage, which are highly affected by soil moisture, were most common in the organically cultivated 4-year-old roots. Organically cultivated ginseng showed early defoliation than conventionally cultivated ginseng, as a result, its yield and weight were low, while the incidence of physiological disorders was low. In order to increase the yield of organically cultivated ginseng, studies on cultivation technology that can overcome early defoliation, as well as soil moisture management that can minimize physiological disorders, are required.

Effect of Prophylactic Ibuprofen in Preterm Infants Less than 1,250 g in Birth Weight (1,250 g 미만 미숙아에서 예방적 Ibuprofen의 효과)

  • Purpose: Ibuprofen is used for prevention and treatment of patent ductus arteriosus as an alternative drug of indomethacin in very premature infants. We aimed to determine the effect of prophylactic ibuprofen on patent ductus arteriosus and clinical outcomes in preterm infants less than 1,250 g. Methods: A retrospective review of 39 preterm infants who were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit from November 2009 to July 2010 was performed. Patients were divided into a prophylactic group (n=13) and a matched historical control group (n=26), where prophylactic ibuprofen were administrated within 24 hours after birth. The rate of ductal closure, side-effects of drug treatment and clinical outcomes were compared between two groups. Results: Comparison of the prophylactic and control groups revealed no significant differences in the rate of ductal closure (69.2% vs 77.7%, P=0.825) and surgical ligation (23.1% vs 30.8%, P=0.719). Occurrence of bowel perforation was more frequent in the prophylactic group than the control group, but was not significant (30.8% vs 11.5%, P=0.194). The frequency of intraventricular hemorrhage (grade${\geq}$3) and other outcomes did not differ between the groups. Conclusion: Ibuprofen prophylaxis in preterm infants did not decrease the rate of ductal closure, the need for surgical ligation and the incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage. Further studies are needed to investigate the beneficial effect and associated adverse events attributed to ibuprofen prophylaxis.

Performance Evaluation Model for Public-Private Partnership Projects - with Reference to BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) Road Projects - (민간투자사업 성과평가 모델 개발 및 적용 - 도로 부문 사업을 중심으로 -)

  • The aim of this paper is to develop a performance evaluation model for PPP (Public-Private Partnership) projects that appropriately reflects the important traits that are unique to PPP projects. To this end, 1) it defines a set of distinct perspectives involved in the PPP projects and their associated success factors that might differ amongst the perspectives; 2) it identifies the key performance indicators and suggests the performance evaluation criteria for each indicator; and 3) it builds a performance evaluation model by matching the success factors from each perspective with performance measure criteria as well as applies the model to the two selected BTO road projects in Korea. The process of model construction and its application confirms significant differences between the main stakeholder perspectives typically involved in PPP projects, which highlights the need for an evaluation model tailored for PPP projects by taking into account the distinct perspectives. The results from the PPP evaluation model developed in the study is compared against the results from the existing ex-post evaluation model for construction projects in general. The former shows a closer match with the results from the user satisfaction survey conducted. This new evaluation framework and the performance indicators entailed in it permits a balanced evaluation of PPP projects as it takes into account different perspectives involved in PPP projects as well as an understanding of the factors affecting the success of PPP projects. While the construction of the model is based on transport projects, it is applicable to different types of PPP projects through variation with the weight allocation amongst different success factors and/or additions or other adjustments to the performance evaluation criteria as required.

Growth Characteristics and Productivity of Single Cross Maize Hybrid for Grain, 'Andaok' (다수성 종실 옥수수 신품종 '안다옥'의 생육특성과 수량성)

  • Andaok, a new single cross variety, is a yellow dent maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2011. This hybrid, which has a high yield of grain, was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS161 and KS162. KS161 is the seed parent and KS162 is the pollen parent of Andaok. Silking date of Andaok is 3 days later than that of the check hybrid, Jangdaok. Plant height of Andaok is longer than that of Jangdaok. Ear numbers per 100 plants of Andaok is more than that of Jangdaok. Ear length of Andaok is shorter than that of Jangdaok. The weight of 100 seeds of Andaok is heavier than that of Jangdaok. It has moderate resistance to southern corn leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis), black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV) and corn borer. It has strong resistance to northern corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). It has resistance to lodging. Andaok was evaluated for its yield of grain at three locations from 2009 to 2011. The grain yield of Andaok was 7.80 ton/ha. Seed production of Andaok has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS161, and the pollen parent, KS162, in Yeongwol.

Development of Novel Method of Seismic Slope Stability Analysis (신(新) 유사정적 사면안정해석 기법 개발)

  • The seismic slope stability is most often evaluated by the pseudo-static limit analysis, in which the earthquake loading is simplified as static inertial loads acting in horizontal and/or vertical directions. The transient loading is represented by constant acceleration via the pseudostatic coefficients. The result of a pseudostatic analysis is governed by the selection of the value of the pseudostatic coefficient. However, selection of the value is very difficult and often done in an ad hoc manner without a sound physical reasoning. In addition, the maximum acceleration is commonly estimated from the design guideline, which cannot accurately estimate the dynamic response of a slope. There is a need to perform a 2D dynamic analysis to properly define the dynamic response characteristics. This paper develops a new hybrid pseudostatic method that links the modified one-dimensional seismic site response analysis and the pseudostatic algorithm. The modified site response analysis adjusts the density of the layers to simulate the change in mass and weight of the layers of the slope with depth. Multiple analyses were performed at various locations within the slope to estimate the change in seismic response of the slope. The calculated peak acceleration profiles with depth from the developed procedure were compared to those by the two-dimensional analyses. Comparisons show that the two methods result in remarkable match. The calculated profiles are used to perform pseudostatic analysis. The results show that use of peak or a fraction of acceleration at the surface can seriously underestimate or overestimate the factor of safety, and that the proposed procedure significantly enhances the reliability of a standard procedure.

  • Knowledge of growth and development is essential for pediatric dentistry treating growing patients. The data from the pediatric growth curve being used today does not reflect the growth transition of modern times, nor does it match the age range required for dental purposes. The present study, therefore, aims to introduce the process of producing a growth curve and growth rate curve based on data which represents a more accurate description of the present situation. The original data used in this study were from the 5th nationwide survey, SIZE KOREA 2004 study carried out by the Technology and Standards Policy Division, Department of Technology and Standards Planning, Ministry of Commerce, Industry. and Energy. Processing and rearranging the produced data with variations divided into the three quartiles and the 1st, 5th, 95th and 99th percentiles were included to produce a growth observation chart according to sex, height and weight differences. In the same way, a growth rate curve based on the geometric mean value was produced. The resulting growth charts can be used as an index for growth and development, and used for better communication between the pediatric dentist, patients or their parents.

  • In the digital camera system, CMOS image sensor (CIS) is widely used because its size and weight become smaller and power consumption becomes lower. However, there are common problems that colors of the recorded image do not match those of the photographed object and that spectral sensitivity of the CIS used in different cameras varies largely in each case. Therefore, color correction is needed because the spectral sensitivity of the CIS in each color is neither the same color component for most standard colors nor the appropriate color representation for any output devices. In the conventional method, a color correction is empirically obtained by a large number of iterative experiments, but the result is not so satisfied. In this paper, a new method to obtain the efficient color correction matrix for digital camera using CIS is proposed. We obtain camera transfer matrix under the certain white-balance point, and color correction matrix that makes the transfer characteristic of digital camera close to the transfer characteristic of ideal camera is obtained. The experimental results show that the transfer characteristic of digital camera by the proposed method is close to that of the ideal camera. In addition, the image quality of pictures of digital camera using the proposed method is dramatically improved.

The Effects of Mashing and Maturing Conditions on The Quality of Korean Traditional Kanjang(Soysauce) (한국전통간장의 품질에 미치는 사입과 숙성조건의 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum mashing and maturing conditions for Korean traditional Kanjang(soy sauce) production and to reduce the fermentation period. The effects of maturing time of soy sauce mash, maturing temperature, salt concentration and the ratio of Meju to salt brine on the quality of Kaniang(total nitrogen, pH and color) were examined. Soy sauce pigments and about 90% of N constituents contained in soybean Meju(Koji) in soy sauce mash were degraded and solubilized into liquid portion (soy sauce) of the mash within five days of maturing at $30^{\circ}C$ with the mashing ratio(weight/volume) of 1 : 4 of soybean(as raw soybean) to 20% salt brine. No remarkable effects of soy sauce maturing temperature in the range of $5^{\circ}C{\sim}30^{\circ}$ on the digestion and solubilization of N components and pigment extraction during five days of soy sauce mash maturing were observed. Optimum mashing salt brine concentration for the digestion and solubilization of N components and pigment extraction during soy sauce maturing at $30^{\circ}C$ were observed to be in the range of $15{\sim}20%$. The suitable mashing ratio of Meju to salt brine (wt./vol.) to match N content of the standards of identity of Korean traditional Kanjang(soy sauce) was found to be below 1 : 5.

  • This study is on perfume case that is one of a great number of ornaments which was designed by out ancestors. We had developed the tradition and the history of perfume case bag fan-weight etc. These have the same function as the present perfume. case. There were basket-shaped perfume cases which were the smellest one among the personal girdle ornaments in the silla era. The various patterned perfume case were made of gold metal coral platinum or green jadeite etc. In the single-crop trinkets a embroidered perfume bag with the gold and silver thread whose forms perfectly match their functions appeared during the Yi Dynasty. There was also a perfume bag which was one of the daily necessities. A precious "jul perfume" was carried by noble women. A fan-weight perfume bag was attached to the fan to emphasize the intrinsic beauty of utility and function. It is necessary to know the function of prefume case. As perfume case is weared on the clothes it was given more decorative effects as well as the function of medicinal amulet with a sweet smell. Therefore it is very important for us to study perfume case that has various function as an ornament. So The purpose of this study is to investigate the practical and decorative side of perfume case with the general examines of perfume finding how to practice use through our life. The results were as follows; 1. The first use of perfume is perfume through smoke which is for ceremony of religion It removes human body odor by degrees and spreads a sweet odor. Also the materials for making perfume of early age is aromatic plants which will be used flour-made flowers stems. As the materials for making perfume use is increasing today we can invent alcohol perfume today 2. Our country the custom of perfume-used is wide. Among them men's perfume-used was very special phenomenon. For example men were wearing perfume bag in the Silla era. Because perfume represented wealth and noble in those days. They shew off social position personality through perfume-used. 3. One of early religion ceremony article there was the perfume. And perfume case was means for containing perfume. Gradually the perfume case was used widly as increasing needs of perfume in human life. 4. In the middle period of 'Koryo' Dynasty perfume cases had a close relationship with clothes but after Mongolian has been attacked 'Koryo' there were changes in wearing clothes therefore the position of perfume cases were transfered to coat string that was the origin of decoration style that they began. Current Wheat Quality Criteria and Inspection Systems of Major Wheat Producing Countries (밀 품질평가 현황과 검사제도)

  • On the purpose to suggest an advanced scheme in assessing the domestic wheat quality, this paper reviewed the inspection systems of wheat in major wheat producing countries as well as the quality criteria which are being used in wheat grading and classification. Most wheat producing countries are adopting both classifications of class and grade to provide an objective evaluation and an official certification to their wheat. There are two main purposes in the wheat classification. The first objectives of classification is to match the wheat with market requirements to maximize market opportunities and returns to growers. The second is to ensure that payments to glowers aye made on the basis of the quality and condition of the grain delivered. Wheat classes has been assigned based on the combination of cultivation area, seed-coat color, kernel and varietal characteristics that are distinctive. Most reputable wheat marketers also employ a similar approach, whereby varieties of a particular type are grouped together, designed by seed coat colour, grain hardness, physical dough properties, and sometimes more precise specification such as starch quality, all of which are genetically inherited characteristics. This classification in simplistic terms is the categorization of a wheat variety into a commercial type or style of wheat that is recognizable for its end use capabilities. All varieties registered in a class are required to have a similar end-use performance that the shipment be consistent in processing quality, cargo to cargo and year to year, Grain inspectors have historically determined wheat classes according to visual kernel characteristics associated with traditional wheat varieties. As well, any new wheat variety must not conflict with the visual distinguishability rule that is used to separate wheats of different classes. Some varieties may possess characteristics of two or more classes. Therefore, knowledge of distinct varietal characteristics is necessary in making class determinations. The grading system sets maximum tolerance levels for a range of characteristics that ensure functionality and freedom from deleterious factors. Tests for the grading of wheat include such factors as plumpness, soundness, cleanliness, purity of type and general condition. Plumpness is measured by test weight. Soundness is indicated by the absence or presence of musty, sour or commercially objectionable foreign odors and by the percentage of damaged kernels that ave present in the wheat. Cleanliness is measured by determining the presence of foreign material after dockage has been removed. Purity of class is measured by classification of wheats in the test sample and by limitation for admixtures of different classes of wheat. Moisture does not influence the numerical grade. However, it is determined on all shipments and reported on the official certificate. U.S. wheat is divided into eight classes based on color, kernel Hardness and varietal characteristics. The classes are Durum, Hard Red Spring, Hard Red Winter, Soft Red Winter, Hard White, soft White, Unclassed and Mixed. Among them, Hard Red Spring wheat, Durum wheat, and Soft White wheat are further divided into three subclasses, respectively. Each class or subclass is divided into five U.S. numerical grades and U.S. Sample grade. Special grades are provided to emphasize special qualities or conditions affecting the value of wheat and are added to and made a part of the grade designation. Canadian wheat is also divided into fourteen classes based on cultivation area, color, kernel hardness and varietal characteristics. The classes have 2-5 numerical grades, a feed grade and sample grades depending on class and grading tolerance. The Canadian grading system is based mainly on visual evaluation, and it works based on the kernel visual distinguishability concept. The Australian wheat is classified based on geographical and quality differentiation. The wheat grown in Australia is predominantly white grained. There are commonly up to 20 different segregations of wheat in a given season. Each variety grown is assigned a category and a growing areas. The state governments in Australia, in cooperation with the Australian Wheat Board(AWB), issue receival standards and dockage schedules annually that list grade specifications and tolerances for Australian wheat. AWB is managing "Golden Rewards" which is designed to provide pricing accuracy and market signals for Australia's grain growers. Continuous payment scales for protein content from 6 to 16% and screenings levels from 0 to 10% based on varietal classification are presented by the Golden Rewards, and the active payment scales and prices can change with market movements.movements.
