  • Maxillary defects are a result of necessary cancer surgery, congenital anomaly or trauma. Ideally the patient with the aquired maxillary defect should be provided with an obturator prosthesis that is comfortable, restores adequate speech, deglutition, and mastication, and is acceptable cosmetically. This is a case report of open type hollow obturator delivered in the partial maxillectomy treated patient. The satisfied result obtained as follows: The open type hollow obturator has the advantage of easy fabrication, lightness, easy cleaning and restores adquate speech.

  • Acupuncture is so effective and simple to use in the pain and dysfunction syndrome of TMD. Acupuncture treatment is a point-specific. So, the selection of acupuncture point is very important. According to the traditional meridian theory, we select the points; local points around TMJ and mastication muscles(ST6, ST7, GB20, GB21) and remote point(LI4). And if there is another pain, one or two other points are added. Both neural and humoral mechanism play an important role in acupuncture analgesia. The discovery of spinal gate mechanisms shows somatic stimulation can induce pain inhibition. Humoral mechanism has been established from the discovery of opioid receptors and endogenous opioids. Acupuncture induces a relaxation in the patient, which further decreases the muscle tension.

  • Dermoid cyst of the floor of mouth is infrequent. This cyst has been classified as epidermoid, dermoid and teratoid cyst. Dermoid cyst is more common in young adults and no sex predilection and has generally been present for months to years before progressive enlargement causes interference with the mobility of the tongue and disturbance of articulation and mastication. The authors have recently experienced dermoid cyst of the floor of mouth which was confirmed histopathologically.

  • The movements of oral surrounding muscles, lips, and tongue play a very important role while masticating, swallowing, and speaking. In case of the edentulous patient wearing dentures as well, every movement of the tongue can be seen almost the same as that of the dentulous jaw. The crushed food during mastication is swallowed and sent to pharynx. At this course, the contact of the posterior portion of tongue with dentures affects the stabilization of denture. The retention and stability of the complete dentures are related with buccinator muscles of buccal parts, lips in front, and tongue of the lingual sides. Strack(1946) insisted that the arrangement of artificial teeth in the same place as that of the natural dentition is the best way to maintain the stability of denture. In this report, I would like to introduce the several advantages of a new impression method taken simultaneously, and its procedures and clinical cases.

  • Surgical resection of the mandible due to presence of benign or malignant tumor is the most common cause of the mandibular deviation. Depending upon the location and extent of the tumor in the mandible, various surgical treatment modalities like marginal, segmental, hemi, subtotal, or total mandibulectomy can be performed. The clinicians must wait for extensive period of time for completion of healing and acceptance of the osseous graft before considering the definitive prosthesis. During this initial healing period prosthodontic intervention is required for preventing the mandibular deviation. This case report describes early prosthodontic management of a patient who has undergone a reconstructed hemi-mandibulectomy with modified mandibular guide flange prosthesis. The prosthesis helps patient moving the mandible normally without deviation during functions like speech and mastication.

  • Antioxidative noudle products were developed with mixed material and antioxidative liquid extracted from natural products. Matrrials were mixed with wheat flour, rice flour, starch and green tea. 3% of green tea was suitable mixing ratio from the mastication data of texture meter, and proper water contents were 33% to prepare these noodles. The suitable mixing ratio of materials were wheat flour(85%), starch( 12%) and greentea(3%) from the physical data of texture meter. Since AUC value of antioxidative liquid was more higher than that of tap water, antioxidative noodle products were expected for good health and preservation of some diseases.

  • This study examined the effect of cancellous bone microstructure on stress distribution within a premolar tooth and a dental implant against mastication force by the micro-finite element method (FEM). The mandibular specimen including a premolar was obtained from a cadaver and scanned with micro-CT to obtain CT images. FE models were reconstructed from CT images at mid-sagittal plane of the tooth. Six models were generated and analyzed for different structure and density in cancellous bone. Stress distributions fur each implant (or tooth) and the surrounding bone were compared. The study indicated that the microstructure of cancellous bone should be considered in finite element analysis to produce reasonable results and thus implant systems with high success rate.

  • Temporomandibular disorders typically present findings of limited or asymmetric patterns of jaw opening and joint sounds usually described as clicking, popping, grating, or crepitus. Recently, patients with temporomandibular disorders have received an increasingly aggressive treatment with a greater emphasis on surgical and dental reconstruction. Scientific studies have not clearly identified the specific causes of the temporomandibular disorders and therefore some of the treatments are empiric, without a firm scientific foundation. We carried out a study on the patients of pain clinic OPD and concluded that the causes of the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) pain are the prolonged contraction of the muscles of mastication, especially the masseter muscle. Therefore, the spasmolytic treatment of masseter muscle would be a better treatment for TMJ syndrome rather than the surgical and dental reconstruction.
