Present Status of Dietetic Internship Program in Korea (우리나라 병원 수련영양사의 교육 프로그램 현황)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the standardized manual for dietetic internship. The general information of the dietetic internship program in Korea was gathered and of dietetic internship(DI) in the USA was also surveyed. The existence of DI program manual, the number of intern and length of the dietetic internship program, and other general information were investigated. At first, the questionnaire was developed and mailed to 130 hospitals in Korea and the number of returned questionnaires was 42 showing participating rate of 28%. Second, telephone survey was carried out and the number of response was 40 out of 46 participating rate of 87%. The results of this study could be summarized as follow. 1. eneral informations of dietetic internship program in Korea; The hospital having a dietetic internship program was 31.7% and of them 14.6%(12 hospitals) have a manual developed by themselves. The number of dietetic intern per hospital was 2.0$\pm$ 1.4. The length of the program was from 3 to 12 months. Ten hospitals (38.5%) have a only food service program and 16 hospitals (62.5%) have both food service and clinical program. Seventy one percent (58 hospitals) of total hospital were willing to use the well developed standardized dietetic internship manual. 2. eneral information of Dietetic Internship Program in the USA; Two hundred fifty nine hospital had the dietetic internship program approved by ADA. The number of dietetic intern in each hospital was 10.6$\pm$ 6.3. The mean length of the program was 13.6$\pm$ 6.3 months. Twenty seven percent of institution have coordinated internship/masters degree program. The range of tuition for DI program was from 300 to 30,855(otherwise, interns were payed by the hospital in Korea). As a conclusion, the standardized dietetic internship program for the clinical dietitian as nutrition professionals to carry out their job at the hospitals should be developed. And the coordinated internship/masters degree program could be considered to improve the skill levels and job performances of clinical dietitian.

Subjectivity of Leadership Behavior for Nurse Manager in Hospital

  • This study has been attempted using the Q methodology to clarify leader type of nurse managers that head nurses and general nurses recognize, and to clarify its relative relation. Sixty-three statements were extracted through interviews with general and professional people interested in the subject of nurse leaders to extract the Q population. A total of 314 Q population was formed added with 251 questions extracted from related documents. Final 32 Q samples were selected by reorganization of 314 Q population after reexamining statements through inquiry of 1 professor of the nurse department, 2 students in course of nurse science masters degree and 2 students in course of doctoral degree. The P sample selection standard of this study were 25 nurses and 30 head nurses. Examination subjects themselves filled out 32 statements classified in a measure of 9 points from agreeable items to disagreeable items. Principal component factors were analyzed using the QUANL pc program after grading the contents of the P sample. Nurses recognizing subjective structure for leader behaviors of nurse manager were analyzed to be 3 factors: vision presentation type, self-capability consideration type, relationship consideration type, and head nurses recognizing subjective structure were analyzed to be 2 types: task pursuit leader type, and concord pursuit type. Nursing manager's leader behavior, expected by staff nurse are more complex and higher level which may combined with task pursuit leader type in concord pursuit leader of head nurse. Also according to Horsey and Blanchard theory(1977), the effectiveness of leadership becomes to be larger as the accordance rate between the behaviors of nurse leaders and followers reaction increase Two suggestions have been made based on the conclusion. 1. Studies on creating strategies in relation to development, management, selection of nurse leaders should be made based on this study. 2. There is a need for relative study of production and degree of similarity of leadership types based on this study.

Why have Marriages been Delayed? (왜 결혼이 늦어지는가?)

  • In this paper we try to explain delays in one's first marriage that are observed in contemporary society by accounting for possible factors that may play a substantial role in delaying marriages. Discrete-time survival analysis with unobserved heterogeneity was employed. The result indicates that the odds of getting married compared to odds of not getting married are 0.91 times, i.e. 8.5% lower for women with bachelor's degree than women with high school diploma or below. The odds of getting married compared to odds of not getting married are 0.4 times, i.e. 59.6% lower in case of women with masters and/or doctorate program degree than women with bachelor's degree. Employed men's odds of getting married to not getting married are increased by a factor of 1.65 compared to the unemployed men. In addition, if one's family circumstances are economically below average at the age of 14, the odds decrease by a multiple of 0.65. With these results, we are able to conclude that not only education level but also one's economic ability play significant roles in determining one's marriage decision.

A Survey on Frequencies of Smoking Cessation Intervention for Patients Among Clinical Nurses (입원환자를 대상으로 한 간호사들의 금연 중재에 대한 실태 조사연구)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to 1) find out the characteristic of smoke related characteristics of nurses. 2) find out the frequency of Smoking cessation intervention delivered by nurses. 3) compare the differences in mean scores of smoking cessation interventions by general characteristics. Method: The survey questionnaire was mailed out to nurses who were working at the randomly selected hospitals throughout the country from November 28, 2003 to February 15, 2004. Result: $0.6\%$ of nurses were current smokers $40.7\%$ of nurses have attended smoking cessation education. Nurses who were older, had masters degree, had oncology experience, higher position, participated in smoking cessation education, and had smoking related disease among family members were variables related to higher frequencies in delivering tobacco interventions. Conclusion: Although nurses are in an important position in delivering tobacco interventions and provide resources, their participation in consistent delivery of an intervention is less than desirable. To help nurses to participate in the assessment of tobacco use and interventions for cessation, the development of educational program is necessary.

Improving the Standards of Midwifery Education and Practice and Extending the Role of a Midwife in Korean Women and Children′s Health Care

  • Background. A midwife is a medical professional who has a nursing license, and is also licensed as a midwife with one additional year of education. In this globalization era, a midwife's role is increasing in importance for women and children's health care worldwide. Purpose. The primary purpose was to analyze midwifery education programs in Korea and other nations. The secondary purpose was to define strategies to improve midwifery education and practice, and to extend the role of a midwife women and children's health care in Korea. Methods & Results. 1) The definition of a midwife and midwifery practice recognized internationally by World Health Organization (WHO) and International Council of Nurse Midwives (ICNM) was identified. 2) Midwifery education programs of Korea, U.S.A., Sweden, Australia, and Japan, were investigated and discussed. 3) Core competencies for the basic midwifery practice suggested by ACNM of the U.S.A. were reviewed as standard of midwifery practice. 4) As for the midwifery education system, a Masters degree program in a college of nursing is suggested. 5) The role of a midwife includes not only health care of childbirth women and newborn babies, but also a lifelong health care of women as well as her family and children. Conclusion. An effort to extend the midwife's role and to improve service is imperative. The Laws/Acts related to midwives should be revised in regard to education, and practices, and the national examination for midwifery licensure needs revision to qualify for international approval. Also, midwifery curriculum and standards of practice need to be evaluated periodically, and an effective system needs to be established to renew midwife licenses.

The Analysis of Theses Content Related to Parents' Needs for Their Education (부모교육 요구조사 관련 논문 내용 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to draw a general conclusion through summing up theses on parents' need for their education up to the present. The subjects of this study are 25 masters' degree theses on parents' need for their education in the kindergarten from 2001 to 2010. The results of data on parents' education method and style were conducted by frequency analysis. Also it was surveyed if in how many theses the contents of parents' education were rated over average points by Licker. The results of this study are as follows: First, the parents think that the proper frequency of their education is once or two in a semester and the favorite time is from 10 to 12 o'clock or from 2 p. m. to 4 p.m. They also want to learn on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. And they want a professional as their lecturer the most and then a homeroom teacher. Secondly, in the survey of their education style they like more lecture or a short course than any other thing, and then they like home messenger, group council and so on. But especially they don't like the style of visiting class, book lending, ceremony/class assistance, practice (workshop), and visiting home. Thirdly, they want to know a general guide in the kindergarten of the contents of their education a lot. And they want to know some of a budget, program, and assessment of a principal and the teachers in the kindergarten. Fourthly, they want to know all parts of the parents' roles related to rearing their children in their own elements of the contents of their education above all. And they also want strongly their free time, hobby, the liberal arts, amusement and recreation. Fifthly, in the view of infant development they want strongly to know how to communicate with their children rightly, and how to adjust their children's activities and how to praise or blame their children. And they also want how to form their children's right habit and to guide their children's right acts in the infant period the most. Lastly, they want to know children's physical development and their cognitive development in the view of infant development the most. And then they want to know the development of sociology, creativity, morality, and emotion in good order.
