Background: Functional massage is a therapeutic massage that incorporates joint motion in non-end-range to reduce pain and improve range of motion (ROM) in patients. This study was aimed at investigating the immediate effect of functional massage on pain, range of motion, balance ability and, gait speed of patients having undergone total hip replacement. Methods: Twenty patients were treated by one participating orthopedic manual physical therapist and randomly assigned to the control group (n=10) or the experimental group (n=10). To treat patients of each group, functional massage and range of motion exercises were used. The experimental group received a functional massage and the control group received range of motion exercise for minutes for one session. The visual analog scale was used for pain assessment. Balance ability was measured using a timed up and go test and a one-leg standing test for patients. The 10-meter walk test was used for the measurement of gait speed assessment of patients. Results: Significant improvements were observed in terms of balance ability (p<.05), gait speed (p<.05), and ROM (p<.05) after functional massage. There was no significant inter-group difference (p>.05). Conclusion: Application of the functional massage showed that statistically significant improvements in ROM, gait speed, and balance ability after a single treatment session. This technique may be a useful treatment in patients having undergone total hip replacement.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an 8-week ProBody massage program on body alignment and plantar pressure balance in middle-aged men with musculoskeletal diseases. Method: The subjects of this study were 20 middle-aged men with musculoskeletal diseases in B Metropolitan City who participated in an 8-week ProBody massage program conducted twice a week. Physical characteristics (height, weight, and body mass index), body alignment, and plantar pressure were assessed before and after the experiment. Results: The 20 middle-aged men with musculoskeletal diseases who underwent the ProBody massage program showed positive changes in physiological characteristics, body alignment, and plantar pressure balance. Conclusion: Consequently, the 8-week ProBody massage program was suggested to be effective for improving and preventing postural imbalance in middle-aged men with musculoskeletal diseases. The ProBody massage program could also be utilized to improve the body alignment and plantar pressure balance in middle-aged women with musculoskeletal diseases.
Purpose: To evaluate the effects of abdominal meridian massage either with the use of aroma oils or without using the oils for the relief of constipation in institutionalized children with cerebral palsy. Method: Using a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design, 40 children were randomly assigned to experimental (n=21) and control (n=19) groups. The experimental group received abdominal meridian massage with mixture of aroma oils, and the control group received abdominal meridian massage only. Prior to the intervention, baseline data were collected, and then abdominal meridian massage with or without aroma oils were given to both groups every morning for 15 minutes a day, six days a week, for 2 weeks. Outcome measures were number of bowel movements, amount of stool (gm), and frequency of laxatives, suppositories or enema. Using SPSS/Win 12.0 program, data were analyzed by $X^2$ test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Children in the experimental group defecated a larger volume of stool, and used fewer laxatives than those in the control group. The treatment effects lasted for 1 week after treatment. Conclusion: Abdominal meridian massage with aroma oils appears to be an effective adjunct maneuver in relieving constipation among institutionalized children with cerebral palsy.
This study developed smart vests with heat and massage functions that changed patterns, designs, materials, etc., and evaluated their functions and satisfaction. A knitted fabric with good elasticity and a heating lining were used, and in consideration of this, the final vest pattern fitted to the upper body was completed. A heat pad was attached to the back, and 6 vibration motors were attached to the trapezius muscle. The controller was placed on the left chest for easy operation, and the battery was stored in an inner pocket under the controller. The heating effect of the smart vest, the location of the devices, and the ease of operation were excellent. When the massage function was operated, the thermal comfort was increased compared to when the massage function was not operated, and the high thermal comfort was perceived by the operation of heat and heat+massage function. Due to the battery, the weight, irritating contact of devices and wearing sensation decreased, but there was no reduction in wearing sensation due to heat and vibration devices. The greater the satisfaction with the massage function, thermal comfort, fit, appearance and weight, the greater the product satisfaction.
This research is to verify the effects of infant massage on teacher-infant interaction and nursery adaptation. The subjects were 20 infants younger than one year of age, and the experimental group and the control group were randomly assigned. I developed an infant massage activity and trained an infant teacher to do it with 30-hours workshop. The massage was accomplished a total of 18 times, 3 times a week for 6 weeks. The research tools employed are the Caregiver Interaction Scale(CIS) which was developed by Arnett(1989) and employed by Kim(2009) and the Preschool Adjustment Questionaire(PAQ) which was employed by Yang(2005). They were modified and supplemented for this study to serve as a teacher rating scale. The collected data was analyzed after the experiment service through the t-verification. The results showed that the experimental group that took the infant massage scored higher than the control group in both teacher-infant interaction and nursery adaptation. Therefore, it demonstrated that infant massage has an effect on positive and permissive interaction in teacher-infant interaction and nursery adaptation.
Objectives : To evaluate the effects of aroma hand massage on sleep disturbance and depression in hospitalized elderly patients. Methods : The data was collected using questionnaires from the subjects who were admitted to the G Medical Hospital in Daegu from 7 July to 12 July, 2008. A total of 23 subjects were selected. The subjects were applied with the aroma hand massage to both hands using a solution diluting four drops of lavender oil in jojoba oil 10cc. Aroma hand massage was given for 10 minutes, one time a day, during 5 days. Results : There was statistically significant improvement on the Korean sleep scale(t=-7.614, p=0.000) and on the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Korea Version(GDSSF-K)(t=3.444, p=0.002). Conclusions : aroma hand massage is an effective therapeutic intervention for decreased sleep disturbance and depression. Therefore, aroma therapy and hand massage by therapeutic intervention is recommended for improving psychological and physiological functions in hospitalized elderly patients.
Purpose: This study was to identify the effect of hand massage on comfort in women with gynecologic cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for this study. Hand massage was provided to the experimental group for 5 min (2.5 min for each side) once on admission day, twice from the second day until the day before discharge, and once in the morning on discharge day. Results: Findings showed no significant differences in pre and post levels of general, physical, psycho-spiritual, social and environmental comfort. However, women's comfort levels in all domains were increased after the chemotherapy in the experimental group. Conclusion: Although there were some increases in women's comfort levels on all domains after the treatment, hand massage was not proved as a statistically useful nursing intervention in comforting women with gynecologic cancer. The results suggest that hand massage could be effective if it is applied longer than it was in this study. The future implications of hand massage in patients with various cancers are discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the spouse's aromatherapy massage on labor pain, anxiety during labor and childbirth satisfaction for laboring women. Methods: The subjects of this study were laboring women who didn't have any complication during pregnancy and who have admitted for childbirth with their spouse to E. hospital in D city. This study was carried out from June to November in 2007. The subjects were allocated into three groups: spouse's aromatherapy massage group, spouse's carrier oil massage group and control group. Aromatherapy massage and carrier oil massage was applied for ten minutes every hour after the cervix dilated 5cm. The subjects in the control group were with their spouse during labor. Results: The labor pain by VAS was significantly different among the three groups (Kruskal-Wallis $x^2$=7.09 p=.029) in the deceleration phase. The anxiety during labor by VAS were significantly different among the three groups (Kruskal-Wallis $x^2$=6.77 p=.034) in the deceleration phase. There was no significant difference in childbirth satisfaction among the three groups. Conclusion: The spouse's aromatherapy massage using Lavender, Clary sage, Frankincense and Neroli could be effective in decreasing labor pain and decreasing anxiety level during labor.
The purpose of this study is the evaluation of the degree of post injection soreness, symptom duration, factor and autonomic symptoms after trigger point injection in patients with trigger points. We devided the subjects of the study into four groups Such as, only dry needling, needle-TENS, with massage-stretch, massage-stretch only, including 100 patients, and measured the visual analog scale before treatment and after treatment. Before treatment, The VAS mean scores were $6.2{\pm}1.03$ in needle-TENS with massage-stretch group ; $6.2{\pm}1.75$ in needdle-TENS group, and $6.3{\pm}1.85$ in dry needling group, and $6.8{\pm}1.03$ in massage-stretch group. In post injection 3rd day, The VAS mean score were $0.9{\pm}1.78$ in needling-TENS with massage-stretch group, $1.1{\pm}1.52$ in needling-TENS group, $1.7{\pm}1.10$ in dry needling group, and $3.9{\pm}3.01$ in massage-stretch group. As for a causative factor of activities for trigger were overload with 37.0%, overwork with 35.0% and fatigue with 13.0%. Symptoms for trigger were tenderness with 28.0%, numbness and tingling with 24.0%. ROM limit with 17.0% and tightness with 17.0%. As a result, needling-TENS with massage-stretch group showed less soreness and effect than other group.
Purpose: This study was done to develop a new nursing intervention, Meridian Massage, and to investigate its effect on weight in infants and mother-infant interaction. Method: This study was conducted using a quasi experimental non equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Thirty-one newborn infants from a postpartum Management Center were selected and assigned to two groups, experimental and control. Data were collected from February 1 to September 30, 2004. Infants in the experimental group (16) were given Meridian massage for 15 minutes daily for 6 days and weighed every day at 10 am. Using the Nursing Child Assessment Feeding Scale(1978), mother-infant interaction was determined before the treatment, after 1 week and 1 month after the massage. Results: Infants in the experimental group had a higher average weight than those in the control group and the difference was significant (Z=-2.29, p=.022). For mother-infant interaction, the experimental group had higher scores tHan the control group, and the difference was significant between both the two groups, and the 3 measurement times. Conclusion: The Meridian Massage in this study showed positive weight gain and positive mother-infant interaction. This study shows that meridian massage is an effective nursing intervention in improving infant development.
