Effect of TiC Content on Oxidation Behavior of Sintered WC-TiC-TaC Alloys

  • The effect of TiC content on oxidation behavior of the sintered WC-TiC-TaC alloys with 2 mass% TaC and different TiC amounts of 3-45 mass% was investigated through oxidation tests in air at 973K. As a result of the tests, it was revealed that with increasing TiC content in the alloys, mass changes caused by oxidation and thickness of the scale decreased. Thus, it is considered that the main component of the scales changed gradually from $WO_3$ to $TiO_2$ with increasing TiC content in the alloys, and oxygen diffusion through the scale to the alloys was inhibited gradually.

  • Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of Reynolds number on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}=180$, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Dynamic subgrid-scale models for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses and mass fluxes were employed to close the governing equations. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows with constant mass flux imposed at the wall are studied for Sc=0.71. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. To show the effects of Reynolds number on the turbulent mass transfer, the mean concentration profile, root-mean-square of concentration fluctuations, turbulent mass fluxes, cross-correlation coefficient, turbulent diffusivity and turbulent Schmidt number are presented.

HORIZON RUN 4 SIMULATION: COUPLED EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES AND LARGE-SCALE STRUCTURES OF THE UNIVERSE

  • The Horizon Run 4 is a cosmological N-body simulation designed for the study of coupled evolution between galaxies and large-scale structures of the Universe, and for the test of galaxy formation models. Using 63003 gravitating particles in a cubic box of Lbox = 3150 h−1Mpc, we build a dense forest of halo merger trees to trace the halo merger history with a halo mass resolution scale down to Ms = 2.7 × 1011h−1M. We build a set of particle and halo data, which can serve as testbeds for comparison of cosmological models and gravitational theories with observations. We find that the FoF halo mass function shows a substantial deviation from the universal form with tangible redshift evolution of amplitude and shape. At higher redshifts, the amplitude of the mass function is lower, and the functional form is shifted toward larger values of ln(1/σ). We also find that the baryonic acoustic oscillation feature in the two-point correlation function of mock galaxies becomes broader with a peak position moving to smaller scales and the peak amplitude decreasing for increasing directional cosine μ compared to the linear predictions. From the halo merger trees built from halo data at 75 redshifts, we measure the half-mass epoch of halos and find that less massive halos tend to reach half of their current mass at higher redshifts. Natural frequencies and response amplitude operators of scale model of spar-type floating offshore wind turbine

  • This paper is concerned with the comparative numerical and experimental study on the natural behavior and the motion responses of a 1/75 moored scale model of a 2.5 MW spar-type floating offshore wind turbine subject to 1-D regular wave. Heave, pitch and surge motions and the mooring tensions are investigated and compared by numerical and experimental methods. The upper part of wind turbine which is composed of three rotor blades, hub and nacelle is modeled as a lumped mass and three mooring lines are pre-tensioned by means of linear springs. The numerical simulations are carried out by a coupled FEM-cable dynamics code, while the experiments are performed in a wave tank equipped with the specially-designed vision and data acquisition system. Using the both methods, the natural behavior and the motion responses in RAOs are compared and parametrically investigated to the fairlead position, the spring constant and the location of mass center of platform. It is confirmed, from the comparison, that both methods show a good agreement for all the test cases. And, it is observed that the mooring tension is influenced by all three parameters but the platform motion is dominated by the location of mass center. In addition, from the sensitivity analysis of RAOs, the coupling characteristic of platform motions and the sensitivities to the mooring parameters are investigated.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain the effects of the parameters of the suspension system in railway rolling-stock for KT-23 type Passenger vehicle. According to the analysis and the small scale model car test. optimal condition was obtained for the stiffness ratio of secondary spring to primary spring of the suspension system and the mass ratio of the bogie frame to the car body. The analysis of the study shows that if the car body mass is increased or secondary stiffness Is lowered, the vertical vibration level is reduced and the passenger comfort can be improved. Especially, strong peaks are occurred in the frequencies corresponding to the rotational speed of driving axle and vehicle wheel. Hence, in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics through the small scale model car, the driving method of the vehicle on the test bench, rotational characteristics of the wheel and the natural modes of vehicle should be investigated and be modified.

미소해칭 전열관의 젖음률에 대한 실험적 상관식 (Experimental Correlation of Wettability for Micro-scale Hatched Tubes)

  • The objectives of this paper are to develop a new method of wettability mea-surement and to study the effect of surface roughness on the wettability in a $H_2O$/LiBr falling film absorber. Two absorber tubes with micro-scale roughness and a bare tube are tested in a falling film absorber installed in a test rig. Inlet solution temperature, concentration and mass flow rate are considered as key parameters. A new method is proposed to estimate the wettability of a tube by measuring a minimum mass flow rate to wet the tube completely. The wettability for the structured surfaces was higher than that for the bare tube. The wettability decreased linearly along the vertical location. The wettability increased with increasing the solution temperature and the solution mass flow rate. The experimental correlations of the wettability for the bare and the micro-hatched tubes were developed with error bands of$\pm20%\;and\;\pm10%$, respectively. This work can be used in the design of absorbers with micro-scale roughness.

Lattice-spring-based synthetic rock mass model calibration using response surface methodology

  • The lattice-spring-based synthetic rock mass model (LS-SRM) technique has been extensively employed in large open-pit mining and underground projects in the last decade. Since the LS-SRM requires a complex and time-consuming calibration process, a robust approach was developed using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to optimize the calibration procedure. For this purpose, numerical models were designed using the Box-Behnken Design technique, and numerical simulations were performed under uniaxial and triaxial stress states. The model input parameters represented the models' micro-mechanical (lattice) properties and the macro-scale properties, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus, cohesion, and friction angle constitute the output parameters of the model. The results from RSM models indicate that the lattice UCS and lattice friction angle are the most influential parameters on the macro-scale UCS of the specimen. Moreover, lattice UCS and elastic modulus mainly control macro-scale cohesion. Lattice friction angle (flat joint fiction angle) and lattice elastic modulus affect the macro-scale friction angle. Model validation was performed using physical laboratory experiment results, ranging from weak to hard rock. The results indicated that the RSM model could be employed to calibrate LS-SRM numerical models without a trial-and-error process.

AGN BROAD LINE REGIONS SCALE WITH BOLOMETRIC LUMINOSITY

  • The masses of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be derived spectroscopically via virial mass estimators based on selected broad optical/ultraviolet emission lines. These estimates commonly use the line width as a proxy for the gas speed and the monochromatic continuum luminosity, λLλ, as a proxy for the radius of the broad line region. However, if the size of the broad line region scales with the bolometric AGN luminosity rather than λLλ, mass estimates based on different emission lines will show a systematic discrepancy which is a function of the color of the AGN continuum. This has actually been observed in mass estimates based on Hα/Hβ and CIV lines, indicating that AGN broad line regions indeed scale with bolometric luminosity. Given that this effect seems to have been overlooked as yet, currently used single-epoch mass estimates are likely to be biased.

Disruption time scale of merged halos in a dense cluster environment

  • To obtain a reliable estimate of the cold dark matter (CDM) substructure mass function in a dense cluster environment, one needs to understand how long a merged halo can survive within the host halo. Measuring disruption time scale of merged halos in a dense cluster environment, we attempt to construct the realistic CDM mass function that can be compared with stellar mass functions to get a stellar-to-halo mass ratio. For this, we performed a set of high-resolution simulations of cold dark matter halos with properties similar to the Virgo cluster. Field halos outside the main halo are detected using a Friend-of-Friend algorithm with a linking length of 0.02. To trace the sub-halo structures even after the merging with the main halo, we use their core structures that are defined to be the most 10% bound particles.

  • Numerical analysis is applied to model Pt-catalyzed reaction in a micro-scale combustor fueled by butane. The reaction constants of catalytic oxidation are determined from plug flow model with the experimental data. Orders of magnitude between the chemical reaction rate and the mass transfer rate are carefully compared to reveal which mechanism plays a dominant role in the total fuel conversion rate. For various conditions of fuel flow rate and surface temperature, the profiles of Sherwood number are investigated to study the characteristics of the mass transport phenomena in the micro-tube combustor.
