Tenebrio molitor larvae contain large amounts of proteins, lipids and other functional materials, enabling this insect to be used as an edible food source in animal feeds and for industrialization. Although many efforts have been made to set up mass rearing systems, few studies have been conducted to establish optimal rearing conditions for the production of high quality T. molitor larvae. Herein we investigated 1) the effects of additional diets on the survival and fecundity of the insect, 2) the relationship between oviposition period and the uniformity of larval size, 3) the effects of rearing density and temperature on insect development, and 4) the storage stability of eggs and pupae at low temperatures given possible temporary production discontinuation. The addition of carrot and zucchini to the traditional wheat bran diet significantly increased the survival and fecundity rate of adult T. molitor. Of the three different oviposition sampling periods (3, 7, and 14 days) used to investigate the uniformity of the hatched larvae in each treatment, the period of 3 and 7 days provided higher uniformity than the 14 days oviposition period. Larval development was faster at $30^{\circ}C$ than at 20, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$. Interestingly, oviposition rates were highest at $20^{\circ}C$ but showed much slower larval development and lower uniformity at $30^{\circ}C$. Regarding the effect of larval rearing densities (1, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 larvae per 90 mm diam. dish), larval weight was significantly reduced at higher rearing densities, but larval longevity and length were not influenced by rearing density. The 30 larvae/dish is suggested to be a reasonable density to be applied to mass production systems. When kept at $4^{\circ}C$, T. molitor eggs showed a significant reduction in hatching rate; however, when stored under the same conditions, pupae emergence rates remained high until 10 weeks, suggesting that storage at low temperatures is more suitable for the pupal stage than the egg stage. Our findings suggest that an increase in T. molitor adult survival and fecundity rates and a uniformity of hatched larval development can be achieved with the following recommendations: a combination diet (including wheat bran), a 7-day oviposition period; a larvae-rearing temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, a rearing density of 30 larvae/dish, and the storage of pupal stages at low temperatures in the case of rearing discontinuation. This study serves as a strong foundation for the successful mass production of high quality T. molitor larvae.
Since 1975, the studies on in vitro rearing Trichogramma spp., Anastatus japonicus Ashmead, Telenomus dendrolimusi Chu, Dibrachys cavus Walker, Habrobracon hebetor(Say), Bracon greeni Ashmead have been conducted successfully in China. The simulated “host-eggs" are made of polyethylene or polypropylene semispherical capsules, containing artificial diets, in which insectan pupal hemolymph is the main component. Manufacture of simulated “host larvae" are made of small rectangular parafilm of cotton-paper bags, containing artificial diets with insectan pupal hemolymph as the main component. Mass production of in vitro reared Trichogramma spp. and Anastatus japonicus and its utilization in the fields showed good effectiveness in controlling cotton bollworm, pine caterpillars, sugarcane borers and litchi stink bug.
To establish the successive rearing method of the perilla leaf pyralid, Prausta panopealis Walker, experiments were carried out wiht three diets based on a JAMSI-type artificial die for silkworm. On the SS4 diet containing 40% of perilla leaf powder the pupal and adult yields were higher than those on th fresh green perilla leaves.
A storage mite, Tyrophcgus putrescentiae, is recently known to be widely distributed in Korea, being commonly found in house dust, and may, therefore, be allergenically important. The purpose of this study was to develop mass rearing techniques for supplying a large quantity of allergens. The laboratory mouse food powder gave the highest yield, showing 1,251.5-fold increase in number after 10 weeks, and the mixed powder of laboratory mouse food and yeast (1 : 1) also gave same level of the production (1.203 1-fold increase in week 10). Several different combinations of temperature and relative humidity conditions were compared, and the maximum propagation was obtained at $25^{\circ}C$ and 64% RH, showing 960-fold increase in number. When the same amount of culture media was used the size of the culture container did not significantly influence the quantitative yield of T. putrescentice mites.
A mass-rearing method for a soil-dwelling predatory mite Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley) was developed using the double box system. The rearing box consists of two, outer (22 L, $54{\times}36{\times}18cm^3$) and inner (6.5 L, $31{\times}22{\times}11cm^3$), plastic boxes. Inner box was filled with chaff (rice husks) which is used as the shelter of the predatory mites. Outer box contained 1 L of water and the inner box, then covered with a lid. This system prevents the predatory mites from escaping as well as keeping moisture of the shelter. In addition, Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), as prey mites of S. scimitus, was reared on the rice bran as a food source using the same double box system. The both mites were reared at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, $60{\pm}10%$ relative humidity condition. The prey mites were provided once a week. The density of predatory mites increased three times for four weeks and the final population was approximately 120,000 individuals/box (4 L). This is a simple mass-raring technique of S. scimitus and helpful for the biological control of soil pests.

The mass-rearing system for Neodryinus typhlocybae as a biological control agent of Metcalfa pruinosa was established. Depending on the density of host nymphs and plants, the average number of cocoons produced by the parasitoids was 5-8 and 70-150 cocoons per leaf and sapling of mulberry, respectively. There is a significant difference in cocoon length between females (6.10-6.46mm) and males (4.20-4.62mm). Sex determination of cocoons before emergence will be helpful for efficiently releasing this parasitoid in fields. The parasitic rate of N. typhlocybae at the semi-field condition was on average 13-17%. The release number of this parasitoid did not affect parasitism. Nevertheless, the population growth rate of M. pruinosa was reduced by increasing the release number of N. typhlocybae. The parasitoid offspring's sex and bivoltine were influenced by the host age. On young host nymphs, the bivoltine portion of parasitoid increased. When parasitized on 4th or 5th nymphs, the offspring's female ratio of N. typhlocybae increased. This result may be useful for potentially controlling mass rearing production of parasitoid.
Biological characteristics of the almond moth, Cadra cautella, of which eggs will be substitute diets for Orius spp. and Trichogramma spp., were investigated and a mass-rearing system for the moth was developed. At 25$^{\circ}C$, egg, larval, and pupal period was 4.2, 29.8 and 8.3 days, respectively, and adult longevity was 5.8 days for female and 4.8 days for male. Total number of eggs at 20, 25 and 30$^{\circ}C$ was 128.9,207.9 and 139.9, respectively. The moth could be successfully reared with all food substrates tested, of which rice bran (50%)+chick feed (50%) assumed to be proper for massrearing in view of cost. Eggs could be stocked at 9 C for 7 days, representing 82% hatchability. In the rearing cage (16${\times}$24${\times}$9cm) used, 1,000 eggs was better for initial level of inoculation, showing relatively high emergence rate and adult weight. Mass-rearing procedures were explained in detail.
The ovipositional characteristics of the endangered species Prosopocoilus astacoides blanchardi was investigated for indoor mass-rearing. This insect required 3 weeks or more for mating after emergence when introduced at the 1:1 ratio of male to female. Among temperatures studied at 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32℃, the pre-ovipositional period of P. astacoides blanchardi was longest at 16℃ with an average of 109 days after emergence, while it was shortest at 32℃ with an average of 59.4 days. The number of eggs laid at 24℃ was highest with an average of 40.6 per female. The average lifespan of adults at 16℃ was 208.8 days for males and 263.9 days for females, while at 32℃ 96.1 days for males and 130.3 days for females. The number of laid eggs was dependent on insect rearing chamber size. The oviposition-trees did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect the number of laid eggs and ovipositional period. The results of this study could be used as rearing data for the restoration and mass propagation of the endangered species P. astacoides blanchardi.
