The ever-increasing cost of natural sand and the environmental impacts of extracting manufactured sand (quarry sand) calls for exploring the potential to use alternative materials as fine aggregates in concrete. Copper slag and ferrous slag are industrial by products obtained from the smelting process of copper and iron respectively. A large quantity of copper slag and ferrous slag end up being disposed as waste in landfills and this poses a serious threat to the environment. Copper slag and ferrous slag have similar physical and chemical properties as natural sand and also exhibit pozzolanic activity. This paper studies the technical feasibility of industrial by-products such as copper slag and ferrous slag to replace the fine aggregate in concrete by evaluating the workability, strength and durability characteristics of concrete. The test results indicate that the strength properties are not affected by 40% or 100% replacement of quarry sand with iron slag or copper slag. However, 40% replacement of quarry sand with iron slag or copper slag in concrete is recommended considering the durability aspects of concrete.
This study aims to examine four machine learning (ML)-based models for their potential to estimate the splitting tensile strength (STS) of manufactured sand concrete (MSC). The ML models were trained and tested based on 310 experimental data points. Stone nanopowder content (SNPC), curing age (CA), and water-to-cement (W/C) ratio were also studied for their impacts on the STS of MSC. According to the results, the support vector regression (SVR) model had the highest correlation with experimental data. Still, all of the optimized ML models showed promise in estimating the STS of MSC. Both ML and laboratory results showed that MSC with 10% SNPC improved the STS of MSC.
The extensive utilization of concrete has given rise to environmental concerns, specifically concerning the depletion of river sand. To address this issue, waste deposits can provide manufactured-sand (MS) as a substitute for river sand. The objective of this study is to explore the application of machine learning techniques to facilitate the production of manufactured-sand concrete (MSC) containing stone nano-powder through estimating the splitting tensile strength (STS) containing compressive strength of cement (CSC), tensile strength of cement (TSC), curing age (CA), maximum size of the crushed stone (Dmax), stone nano-powder content (SNC), fineness modulus of sand (FMS), water to cement ratio (W/C), sand ratio (SR), and slump (S). To achieve this goal, a total of 310 data points, encompassing nine influential factors affecting the mechanical properties of MSC, are collected through laboratory tests. Subsequently, the gathered dataset is divided into two subsets, one for training and the other for testing; comprising 90% (280 samples) and 10% (30 samples) of the total data, respectively. By employing the generated dataset, novel models were developed for evaluating the STS of MSC in relation to the nine input features. The analysis results revealed significant correlations between the CSC and the curing age CA with STS. Moreover, when delving into sensitivity analysis using an empirical model, it becomes apparent that parameters such as the FMS and the W/C exert minimal influence on the STS. We employed various loss functions to gauge the effectiveness and precision of our methodologies. Impressively, the outcomes of our devised models exhibited commendable accuracy and reliability, with all models displaying an R-squared value surpassing 0.75 and loss function values approaching insignificance. To further refine the estimation of STS for engineering endeavors, we also developed a user-friendly graphical interface for our machine learning models. These proposed models present a practical alternative to laborious, expensive, and complex laboratory techniques, thereby simplifying the production of mortar specimens.

Self-compacting concretes (SCC) are highly fluid concrete which can flow without any vibration. Their composition requires a large quantity of fines to limit the risk of bleeding and segregation. The use of crushed sand rich in limestone fines could be an adequate solution for both economic and environmental reasons. This paper investigates the influence of quarry limestone fines from manufactured crushed sand on rheological, mechanical and durability properties of SCC. For this purpose, five mixtures of SCC with different limestone fines content as substitution of crushed sand (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%) were prepared at constant water-to-cement ratio of 0.40 and $490kg/m^3$ of cement content. Fresh SCC mixtures were tested by slump flow test, V-funnel flow time test, L-box height ratio, segregation resistance and rheological test using a rheometer. Compressive and flexural strengths of SCC mixtures were evaluated at 28 days. Regarding durability properties, total porosity, capillary water absorption and chloride-ion migration were studied at 180 days. For the two test modes in fresh state, the results indicated compatibility between slump flow/yield stress (${\tau}_0$) and V-funnel flow time/plastic viscosity (${\mu}$). Increasing the substitution level of limestone fines in SCC mixtures, contributes to the decrease of the slump flow and the yield stress. All SCC mixtures investigated achieved adequate filling, adequate passing ability and exhibit no segregation. Moreover, the inclusion of limestone fines as crushed sand substitution reduces the capillary water absorption, chloride-ion migration and consequently enhances the durability performance.

Because the WFS(Waste Foundry Sand), by-product of a casting factory, is generally a smaller particle than a fine aggregate, it has a bad influence on quality of concrete. Especially, the grading of aggregate is a very important factor in the case of concrete-based products having low water cement ratio manufactured by vibration and pressing method. Therefore, it is necessary to use WFS with the suitable grading of aggregate that it don't has a bad Influence on the quality of concrete-based products. This study investigated the suitable using proportion of WFS by means of the composition method of aggregate suggested by Driscoll. The results showed that it was desirable to use 10% of WFS since higher strength was developed with that amount.

In this study we measured the changes according to time respectively on the basis of 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes, taking into consideration the decline in fluidity of concrete according to elapsed time to analyze manufacturing capability of batcher plant according to elapsed time of ready-mixed concrete manufactured in batcher plant, and offer basic data for mixture design of ultra-high strength concrete. The proportion of water-binder was 23.55, water content was 160kg/m3, proportion of replacement of crushed sand was 0, 20 and 40% at 3 level, and we applied to the same condition of triaxial component using blast furnace slag powder and silica fume as admixture. And to meet the demand of certain fluidity, we measured respectively on property before and after hardening of ultra-high strength concrete using superplasticizer. As a result of experiment, before hardening of ultra-high strength concrete showed the best fluidity in conditions of crushed sand replacement rates of 20% and superplasticizer composition of 1.95%, but it appeared that fluidity drops as time goes by in the same composition condition. And it appeared that when it comes to hardened, the changes of compression strength according to elapsed time by crushed sand replacement rates were within 1MPa. Therefore, it turned out that the difference of strength according to elapsed time was low and compression strength of 280dys in composition mentioned above appeared highly as 88MPa.
Development of an effective liner by utilization of the tailings frm the Imcheon mine and polymer has been tried. The tailings piled in the Imcheon mine, whose true specific gravity is about 2.86, are composed mainly of quartz, alkali-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite, and mostly (93.7% in volume) coarser than sand grain size (50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Strength, leaching and permeability tests have been performed on the test specimens of polymer concrete manufactured with various mixing proportions of tailings, unsaturated polyester resins(UPR), calcium carbonates, stone powder sludges and granite soils. Polymer concrete specimens with stone powder sludges or granite soils as fillers and aggregates indicate 2.5 to 3 fold higher flexural and compressive strengths and lower permeabilities than those with calcium carbonates, which shows their usability as a waterproof liner. Also, the polymer concrete liner with stone powder sludge fillers is more advisable in aspects of utilization of waste sludges than that with other fillers.

The steel slag, a by-product which is produced on the process of manufacturing steel by refining pig iron is mainly used as road materials after aging it. It is necessary to age steel slag for long time in air because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag could make the volume expanded. Due to this reason it prevents steel slag from being used as aggregate of concrete. But steel slag used in this study is controled by a air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Rapid cooling prevents from generating of free-CaO in steel slag. In this study, it was investigated that steel slag manufactured by air-jet method affects on concrete in the freezing and thawing. As results of this study, concrete mixed with steel slag was worse in the freezing and thawing than concrete mixed with sand in spite of using air entraining agent. To obtain durability of concrete in the freezing and thawing, it is desirable to mix 50% of steel slag in concrete per unit weight of volume.

Recently, for the problem solution of demand and supply imbalance of fine aggregate due to the shortage of natural fine aggregate and the environment regulation on sea sand extraction in the construction field, the studies for the application of recycled fine aggregate using waste concrete are being progressed versatilely. The purpose of this study is to investigate quality of recycled fine aggregate manufactured by drying manufacturing system which is the manufacture method of high duality recycled fine aggregate, and to analyze on thehardened and durability properties of recycled concrete using it. Therefore it is to present the fundamental data for application and utilization of recycled concrete. The results of this study are as follows; Quality of recycled fine aggregate by drying manufacturing system is improved, and compressive strength, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth of recycled concrete using high quality recycled fine aggregate are similar to those of normal concrete using natural and crashed sand. But, resistance to $H_{2}SO_{4}$ show decreased somewhat.
In this study, two types of aggregate were used for making self-compacting concrete. Standard cubic specimens were exposed to different temperatures. Seventy-two standard cylindrical specimens ($150{\times}300mm$) and Seventy-two cubic specimens (150 mm) were tested. Compressive strengths of the manufactured specimens at $23^{\circ}C$ were about 33 MPa to 40 MPa. The variable parameters among the self-compacting concrete specimens were of sand stone type. The specimens were exposed to 23, 100, 200, 400, 600, and $800^{\circ}C$ and their mechanical specifications were controlled. The heated specimens were subjected to the unconfined compression test with a quasi-static loading rate. The corresponding stress-strain curves and modulus of elasticity were compared. The results showed that, at higher temperatures, Scoria aggregate showed less sensitivity than ordinary aggregate. The concrete made with Scoria aggregate exhibited less strain. The heated self-compacting concrete had similar slopes before and after the peak. In fact, increasing heat produced gradual symmetrical stress-strain diagram span.
