The purposes of this research were to investigate the enrichment of metal-reducing bacteria from KURT groundwater and the identification of the microbial diversity by 16S rRNA as well as to examine microbial Fe(III)/Mn(IV) reduction and to analyze morphological features of interactions between microbes and precipitates and their mineralogical composition. To cultivate metal-reducing bacteria from groundwater sampled at the KURT in S. Korea, different electron donors such as glucose, acetate, lactate, formate, pyruvate and Fe(III)-citrate as an electron accepter were added into growth media. The enriched culture was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis for the diversity of microbial species. The effect of electron donors (i.e., glucose, acetate, lactate, formate, pyruvate) and electron acceptors (i.e., akaganeite, manganese oxide) on microbial iron/manganese reduction and biomineralization were examined using the 1st enriched culture, respectively. SEM, EDX, and XRD analyses were used to determine morphological features, chemical composition of microbes and mineralogical characteristics of the iron and manganese minerals. Based on 16S rRNA gene analysis, the four species, Fusibacter, Desulfuromonas, Actinobacteria, Pseudomonas sp., from KURT groundwater were identified as anaerobic metal reducers and these microbes precipitated metals outside of cells in common. XRD and EDX analyses showed that Fe(III)-containing mineral, akaganeite (${\beta}$-FeOOH), reduced into Fe(II)/Fe(III)-containing magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) and Mn(IV)-containing manganese oxide (${\lambda}-MnO_2$) into Mn(II)-containing rhodochrosite ($MnCO_3$) by the microbes. These results implicate that microbial metabolism and respiratory activities under anaerobic condition result in reduction and biomineralization of iron and manganese minerals. Therefore, the microbes cultivated from groundwater in KURT might play a major role to reduce various metals from highly toxic, mobile to less toxic, immobile.

[ $MnO_2$ ]catalysts were prepared by precipitation method using potassium manganate and manganese acetate. The effect of calcination temperatures of $MnO_2$ catalysts for CO oxidation has been studied and their physicochemical properties were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ sorption, temperature programmed reduction of $H_2$ ($H_2-TPR$), and temperature programmed desorption of CO (CO-TPD) techniques. $MnO_2$ calcined at $300^{\circ}C$ catalyst has a large surface area $181m^2/g$ having a narrow pore size distribution at 9 nm. The results of XRD and $H_2-TPR$ showed that the catalysts calcined at different temperatures showed mixed oxidation states of Mn such as $Mn^{4+}$ and $Mn^{3+}$. CO-TPD showed that the quantity of $CO_2$ desorbed was decreased with increasing the calcination temperatures. The catalytic activity over the catalyst calcined at $300^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest conversion reaching to 100% at $200^{\circ}C$. $H_2O$ vapor showed an inhibiting effect on the efficiency of the catalyst because of co-adsorption with CO on the active sites of manganese oxide catalysts and the initial catalytic activity of CO oxidation could be regenerated by removing $H_2O$ vapor in the reactants.

Manganese-incorporated neodymium oxide systems with a variety of Mn mol% were prepared to investigate the effect of doping on the electrical properties of neodymium oxide. XRD, XPS, SEM, DSC, and TG techniques were used to analyze the specimens. The systems containing 2, 5, 8, and 10 mol% Mn were found to be solid solutions by X-ray diffraction analysis and the lattice parameters were obtained for the single-phase hexagonal structure by the Nelson-Riley method. The lattice parameters, a and c, decreased with increasing Mn mol%. Scanning electron photomicrographs of the specimens showed that the grain size decreased with increasing Mn mol%. The curves of log conductivity plotted as a function of 1/T in the temperature range from 500 to 1000$^{\circ}C$ at $PO_2$'s of $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-1}$ atm for the specimens were divided into high-and low-temperature regions with inflection points near 820-890$^{\circ}C$. The activation energies obtained from the slopes were 0.53-0.87 eV for low-temperature region and 1.40-1.91 eV for high-temperature region. The electrical conductivities increased with increasing Mn mol% and $PO_2$, indicating that all the specimens were p-type semiconductors. At $PO_2$'s below $10^{-3}$ atm, the electrical conductivity was affected by the chemisorption of oxygen molecule in the temperature range of 660 to 850$^{\circ}C$. It is suggested that electron holes generated by oxygen incorporation into the oxide are charge carriers for the electrical conduction in the high-temperature region and the system includes ionic conduction owing to the diffusion of oxygen atoms in the low-temperature region.
To identify the effect and mechanism of carbon monoxide (CO) on delayed rectifier K+ currents (IK) of human cardiac fibroblasts (HCFs), we used the wholecell mode patch-clamp technique. Application of CO delivered by carbon monoxidereleasing molecule-3 (CORM3) increased the amplitude of outward K+ currents, and diphenyl phosphine oxide-1 (a specific IK blocker) inhibited the currents. CORM3-induced augmentation was blocked by pretreatment with nitric oxide synthase blockers (L-NG-monomethyl arginine citrate and L-NG-nitro arginine methyl ester). Pretreatment with KT5823 (a protein kinas G blocker), 1H-[1,-2,-4] oxadiazolo-[4,-3-a] quinoxalin-1-on (ODQ, a soluble guanylate cyclase blocker), KT5720 (a protein kinase A blocker), and SQ22536 (an adenylate cyclase blocker) blocked the CORM3 stimulating effect on IK. In addition, pretreatment with SB239063 (a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase [MAPK] blocker) and PD98059 (a p44/42 MAPK blocker) also blocked the CORM3's effect on the currents. When testing the involvement of S-nitrosylation, pretreatment of N-ethylmaleimide (a thiol-alkylating reagent) blocked CO-induced IK activation and DL-dithiothreitol (a reducing agent) reversed this effect. Pretreatment with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)-21H,23H porphyrin manganese (III) pentachloride and manganese (III) tetrakis (4-benzoic acid) porphyrin chloride (superoxide dismutase mimetics), diphenyleneiodonium chloride (an NADPH oxidase blocker), or allopurinol (a xanthine oxidase blocker) also inhibited CO-induced IK activation. These results suggest that CO enhances IK in HCFs through the nitric oxide, phosphorylation by protein kinase G, protein kinase A, and MAPK, S-nitrosylation and reduction/oxidation (redox) signaling pathways.
In this study, PVC-LMO beads were prepared by immobilizing lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with poly vinyl chloride (PVC) diluted in dioxane solvent. XRD and SEM analysis confirmed that LMO was immobilized well in PVC-LMO beads. The diameter of PVC-LMO beads prepared by dioxane solvent was about 2 mm. The adsorption experiments of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads were conducted batchwise. The optimum pH was pH 10. The adsorption characteristics of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model was 24.25 mg/g. The thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ were evaluated. The calculated ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ was between -6.16 and -4.14 kJ/mol (below zero), indicating the spontaneous nature of $Li^+$ adsorption on PVC-LMO beads. Also, the results showed that PVC-LMO beads prepared in this study could be used for the removal of lithium ions from seawater containing coexisting ions such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$.
Despite a simple preparation of manganese oxide (MnO2) nanowires by electrodeposition, the improvement in specific capacitance (Csp) and voltammetric response of the MnO2 nanowire-based electrodes has been quite limited. This is attributed to the poor electrical conductivity of MnO2 and its dense bulk morphology due to the aggregation of the nanowires. This study investigated the capacitive performance of MnO2 nanowires electrodeposited on agarose thin films. The good ionic conductivity and porous network of the agarose film provided favorable growth conditions for the MnO2 nanowires with suppressed aggregation. A maximum Csp value of 686 F/g measured at a scan rate of 10 mV/s was obtained, which was significantly larger than that of 314 F/g for the agarose-free MnO2 electrode at the same scan rate. The rate capability was also improved. The Csp measured at a high scan rate of 100 mV/s retained 74.0% of the value measured at 10 mV/s, superior to the retention of 71.1% for the agarose-free MnO2 electrode.

Nanostructuring the electrode surface is an emerging technology to improve the performance of supercapacitors since it can facilitate charge transfer, ion diffusion and electron propagation during electrochemical process. Fabrication of the electrode consisting of two or more materials together has also been focused on since it can provide synergetic effect such as broader working potential range and enhanced capacitance. In this work, we have used polyaniline (PANi) and manganese oxide (MnO2) as electrode materials. PANi is one of the promising electrode materials due to its high electrochemical activity, high doping level and stability. MnO2 is also widely studied material for supercapacitors since it is relatively cheap and environmentally friendly. Firstly, we synthesized polystyrene nanospheres on MnO2 nanoparticles. MnO2-incorporated PANi hollow nanospheres were then fabricated by polymerizing aniline monomers on these PS nanospheres and dissolving the inner PS spheres. The surface morphology, electronic absorption and electrical conductivity of the electrode were analyzed using field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), UV-visible spectrometer, and sheet resistivity meter, respectively. The electrochemical properties such as capacitance of the supercapacitors were also estimated using cyclic voltammetry.
