  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the activity of the craniofacial muscle and craniofacial form and occlusal state. In this study, subjects were consisted of 23 male adults with skeletal Class III malocclusion and 30 male adults with normal occlusion. The measurements in oral exam, lateral ceghalogram, and E.M.G. recordings of anterior temporal, masseter, and upper lip muscles at rest position, clenching in centric occlusion, chewing of gum, swallowing of juice, were analyzed with SPSS system. The results were as follows: 1. At rest position upper lip muscle activity of skeletal Class III group was significantly higher than that of normal group. 2. Both clenching and chewing masseter and temporal muscle activity of normal group were significantly higher than that of skeletal Class III group. 3. During swallowing of juice, upper lip muscle activity of skeletal Class III group were significantly higher than that of normal group. 4. The activities of masseter and anterior temporal muscle during clenching and chewing were significantly correlated with hypodivergent facial form and number of occluded teeth. 5. The activity of upper lip during swallowing had positive correlation with mandibular prognathism.

  • The author installed $3.75mm\times10mm$ $Br{\aa}nrmark$ osseointegrated implants and $3.5mm\times8mm$ I.T.I. hollow screw implants(Benefit) as a free standing abutment to replace lower left and right molars of 44-year-old female patient. Form the foregoing procedure, the author obtained the following results. 1. Free-standing $Br{\aa}nrmark$ and I.T.I. Hollow screw implants(Benefit) could be used to replace molars effectively without reduction of adjacent natural teeth, 2. Rotation of occlusal gold screw of $Br{\aa}nrmark$ implants was observed under occlusal force. 3. Adjustment of height of I.T.I. abutments was necessary in the mandibular second molar because of the limited occlusal clearance. 4. Form the oral examination, patient comments, panoramic and periapical radiographs, there were no pain, gingival imflammation and mobility, but slight reduction of alveolar bone level was shown around both implant systems. 5. Patient comments were comfortable on both systems. but the patient complained about economic problem of $Br{\aa}nrmark$ system and long treatment treatment time of both systems.

  • Actinomycosis is a subacute or chronic suppurative infection caused by Actinomyces species, which are anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria that normally colonize the human mouth and digestive and urogenital tracts. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most frequent clinical form of actinomycosis, and is associated with odontogenic infection. Characterized by an abscess and mandibular involvement with or without fistula, but the cervicofacial form of actinomycosis is often misdiagnosed because the presentation is not specific and because it can mimic numerous infectious and non-infectious diseases, including malignant tumors. We report a rare case of actinomycosis infection with coexisting submandibular sialolithiasis. The patient presented with a $1{\times}1cm$ abscess-like lesion below the lower lip. Punch biopsy of the lesion revealed atypical squamous cell proliferation with infiltrative growth, suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma. The patient underwent wide excision of this lesion, where the lesion was found to be an abscess formation with multiple submandibular sialolithiases. The surgical specimen was found to contain Actinomyces without any evidence of a malignant process. We assumed that associated predisposing factors such as poor oral hygiene may have caused a dehydrated condition of the oral cavity, leading to coexistence of actinomycosis and sialolithiasis.

  • The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) block is the most frequently used mandibular injection technique for achieving local anesthesia for restorative and surgical procedures. However, The IAN block does not always result in successful anesthesia, especially pulpal anesthesia. Lidocaine is used as a "standard" local anesthetic for the inferior alveolar nerve. Articaine recently joined Korean market as a form of dental cartridge. It has an advantage of superior diffusion through bony tissue. A variety of trial was performed to improve the success rate of inferior alveolar nerve block. In this review, the recent update related with inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia will be discussed on the anatomical consideration, anesthetic agent, technique, and complications.

  • Verrucous carcinoma is a distinctive form of low-grade squamous cell carcinoma. The tumor has an exophytic, cauliflower-like appearance, and usually occurs in males and tends to affect individuals over 60 years of age. It typically involves the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus and skin. Most intraoral cases involve the mandibular vestibule, the buccal mucosa and the hard palate. The cause is unknown, but most verrucous carcinomas arise from the oral mucosa in people who chronically use chewing tobacco or snuff. The treatment of oral verrucous carcinoma remains controversial. Whenever possible, surgically total excision and skin or mucosal grafting is recommended. After total excision of huge verrucous carcinoma, instead of dermal or mucosal grafting, we used artificial dermis silicone membrane. We had a good result without recurrence and present this case.

  • A study on the impacted teeth of the anterior segment was carried out. The data for this study were compiled form 1739 outpatients of the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Seoul National University. The following conclusions were obtained; 1. The frequency of the impacted teeth of the anterior segment was 2.8% and the frequency of male was 4.0%, that of female was 2.1%., respectively. 2. The order of occurrence of the impacted teeth in the anterior segment was maxillary canine mesiodens, maxillary central incisor, maxillary lateral incisor, mandibular canine. 3. The etiologic factors of the impaction were the space deficiency for eruption, cleft palate, the prolonged retention of deciduous teeth, dentigerous cyst. 4. The favorable results of treatment and prognosis were obtained from the impacted teeth of the normal shape after surgical exposure and adhered the plastic attachment and inducted them into the dental arch.

  • Osteopetrosis is a rare skeletal disease of unknown etiology. Osteomyelitic changes in the jaw bones are frequently seen in this disease, especially in the mandible and may follow upon tooth extraction. A case is reported of a 31-year-old male who was seen because of intraorally exposed bony spicule and chronic dull pain. Radiographic and haematological investigations led to the diagnosis of osteopeirosis with osteomyelitis. The striking radiologic findings were pathologic mandibular fracture and generalized skeletal thickening. The present case could be grouped under the benign form, type II osteopetrosis. With the conservative and minimally invasive modes of treatment including administration of penicillin G sodium, curettage and closed reduction, we could successfully manage the osteomyelitis and pathologic fracture associated osteopetrosis.

  • Cystic hygroma is a special form of lymphangioma. It most often occurs in the neck of children. We observed a 14-year-old male whose chief complaint was a abnormal swelling of the right mandibular angle area. The computerized tomography showed the well-defined nonenhancing cystic mass on right submandibular gland area and anterior triangle of the neck. The histopathologic fidings exhibited the multiloculatedfluid-filled cysts, which are lined a flattened layer of endothelial cells with foci of lymphocytes found lying adjacent to the lining. After evaluation of above findings, the mass was diagnosed as a cystic hygroma in the neck.
