The purpose of this study was to establish Korean norms that will be valuable aids for diagnosis in orthognathic surgery patients. Lateral cephalometric measurements were established for adult Koreans (60 males, 62 females) with normal occlusion and acceptable profiles. The results were as follows: 1. Means, standard deviation and sexual differentiation were included within each measurement. 2. In skeletal measurements, FH to SN and SN to mandibular plane measurements in females were larger than those in males while all linear measurements in males were larger than those in males were larger than those in females. 3. Significant differences were observed between male and female groups on all of the items that showed vertical relationship in dental measurements. And the measurements of ADH, PDH and overbite in males were larger than those in females while the measurements of incisor exposure in females were larger than those in males. 4. In all measurements of soft tissue except NLA, that is, of FCA, UFH, ULL and LLL, males were larger than those in females.
It is necessary to understand the relationship between socio-cultural elements and smoking, alcohol, and marijuana use behaviors in order to plan public health policy or health promotion program of Mexican Americans. Demographic, socioeconomic status, and acculturation are variables which reflect mechanisms socialization influences these behavior patterns among this population. Thus, this study investigates the prevalence of addictive behaviors and individual differences on addictive behaviors related to variables of acculturation, age, gender, education, and income. And the interrelations among addictive behaviors are also examined. The analyses used data for Mexican Americans from the U.S. Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from July 1982 through December 1984 by the National Center for Health Statistics. ANOVA and correlation coefficients were used for this study. This study found that there are gender differences among addictive behaviors in their prevalence. Both males' and females' alcohol and marijuana use behaviors are positively related to the acculturation. Females' smoking behavior is positively related to acculturation while males' smoking is negatively related to it. Income and education are negatively related to males' smoking and positively related to males' alcohol behavior. However, males' marijuana behavior is not related to income. Females' smoking behaviors is not significantly related income and education. Education and income are positively related to marijuana behavior among females. Age is related to all three addictive behaviors among both gender. Age is negatively related to both males' and females' marijuana use behavior. Interrelation between smoking and marijuana use behavior is not significant among males. However, interrelations between alcohol and marijuana use behavior and between alcohol and smoking are significant among both genders. Females' smoking and marijuana use behavior is also significantly related.
The purpose of this study was to investigate nutrients intakes and nutritional quality of Adults and Elderly People in an island area (Wando). A three-day dietary intakes survey, using a 24 hour recall method was obtained from 187 subjects aged 46 to 84 (mean age 65.3) living in an island area (Wando). Nutient intakes were analyzed using CAN-Pro soft program and compared to Korean RDA. The quality of nutrients was assessed by analyzing nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR), mean adequacy ratio (MAR), and index of nutritional quality (INQ). The average daily mean energy intakes were 1869.0 kcal for males and 1943.9 kcal for females, respectively. Daily intakes of protein for males and females were 28.0 and 30.4 g and those of fat were 31.5 and 28.51 g, respectively. Nutrient consumed below $75\%$ of Korean RDA was protein, vitamin A, Ca and Zn in both males and females. Average CPF ratio of males and females were 78.8 : 6.0 : 15.1 and 80.0 : 6.4 13.4, respectively. Energy intake ratio from protein was significantly higher in over 60 years males. Carbohydrate dependency decreased with age. Protein dependency increased with age. Nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) of energy, protein vitamin A and vitamin E were increased with age in males. The mean adequacy ratio (MAR), an index of overall dietary quality, were not significantly different by age group. Average MAR for males and females was 0.77 and 0.78, respectively. The index of nutritional quality (INQ) showed the tendency to decrease with age. Especially, there were significantly decreases in INQ of all nutrients, except protein, with age. Based on these results, it is evident that people in the island area did not consume enough nutrients. Specially, dietary intake of protein, vitamin A, vitamin E, and Ca were not adequate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of chronic diseases according to obesity in the elderly older than age 65 using data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016~2018). The subjects of the survey were 3,245 elderly older than age 65 who participated in the health survey and nutrition survey, 45.8% of the subjects were males and 54.2% of the subjects were female. 37.5% of all the elderly were obese, and the females (42.4%) were more obese than the males (31.8%) (p<0.001). Diabetes, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia had a similar prevalence of 24.6%, 63.0%, and 12.7% in males and females, respectively. Hypercholesterolemia was higher in the elderly females (44.2%) than in the elderly males (24.9%) (p<0.001). Through the logistic regression analysis, it was found that the prevalence of chronic diseases was higher in obesity than normal in elderly males and females (p<0.001). The total food intake increased from 'under weight' to 'obesity' in males (p<0.01) and females (p<0.001). In the case of the elderly males, the higher the degree of obesity, the higher the energy intake (p<0.05), and 'pre-obesity' consumed the most energy in elderly females. As a result of this study, the higher the obesity rate of the elderly, the higher the prevalence of chronic diseases.
To study entering and exiting routes of male and female Hynobius leechii to a breeding site and staying time of them within the breeding site, we monitored a breeding population located in the research forests of Kangwon National University. The breeding site was surrounded by a drift fence associated with nine pitfall traps. The breeding season of this population was about one month, from 16 March to 13 April, 2005. Breeding males arrived earlier at the breeding pond than females did. The operational sex ratio (OSR), defined as the ratio of males to females which are ready to mate, over a breeding season was female-biased as 0.67 male vs 1 female (57 males vs 87 females), but daily OSRs, OSR in a particular day, within the breeding pond were male-biased with $1.36\sim7.5$ male vs f female in six days out of seven investigated days. While breeding males stayed in the breeding pond for about 11 days, breeding females left the pond as soon as they completed oviposition. However, the females stayed at terrestrial areas near the pond for about seven days before completely leaving the breeding site. Entering and exiting routes to the breeding site were different between males and females, and between ovulated and oviposited females. Both males and females arrived earlier at the breeding site stayed longer within the site. Males stayed longer within the breeding site lost more body weight.

In this paper, COP (center of pressure) during quiet standing and squat-and-stand movement was analyzed to compare the postural control of young and elderly subjects with special interest in the elderly females who were reported to have higher fall rate than the elderly males. Subjects include the young subjects (10 males: $21.8{\pm}2.6yrs$, 10 females: $20.4{\pm}0.3yrs$) and the elderly subjects (8 males: $75.5{\pm}4yrs$, 8 females: $72.3{\pm}3.5yrs$). Analysis parameters were the mean of the distance between the instantaneous COP and the average COP (COP distance) and the mean of the COP movement velocity (COP velocity) in both AP (anterio-posterior) and ML (media-lateral) directions. During quiet standing, the COP distance in ML direction of elderly females was significantly greater than that of elderly males and the COP velocity of elderly females in both ML and AP direction were significantly greater than those of all the other groups. During squat and stand movement, the COP distance of elderly females was not significantly different with that of the elderly males. However, the COP velocity of elderly females was significantly greater than that of all the other groups. The large lateral weight shift (COP distance) of elderly females during quiet standing may explain their greater fall rate. However, this does not apply to squat-and stand movement. In contrast, COP velocity results show that the elderly females' COP is rapidly trembling compared to that of elderly males during both quiet standing and squat and-stand movement. This results suggest that rapid trembling or postural sway may reflect the reduced postural control ability and the risk of falling.
The objective of this study was to examine how circulating leptin concentrations and resting energy expenditures (REE) are related to body composition in obese adults, and to examine differences in these parameters according to gender. Twenty-three subjects, 6 males and 17 females, were recruited from patients with a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 27 at the Obesity Clinic of the K University Hospital. Anthropometric assessments and biochemical analyses were performed, and REEs were measured. In spite of having similar BMI values the plasma leptin levels of females (20.0$\pm$6.5 ng/ml) were significantly higher (p<.05) than those of males (14.2$\pm$6.1) ng/ml). In females, plasma leptin concentrations were found to be positively related to body weight. BMI, waist-hip ratio (WHR), fat mass (FM), body fat, and to the circumferences of forearm, waist and hip (p<.0001). However, in males, plasma leptin concentrations were positively related only to suprailiac thickness (p<.05). The higher plasma leptin levels in females compared to males may, at least partially. be explained by the females' higher subcutaneous fat mass. Plasma leptin concentrations appeared to reflect not only total fat mass but also regional fat distribution, especially in females. REE values of males (2254.3$\pm$256.2 kcal/day) were significantly higher (p<.01) than those of females (1799.1$\pm$454.7 kcal/day). REE values for females were positively related to body weight, BMI, lean body mass (LBM), FM, body fat, and to the circumferences of waist and hip (p<.05); however, REE values for males were (positively) related only to LBM (p<.05). REE values were not related to plasma leptin concentrations for either males or females, indicating that the plasma level of leptin might not be a predictor for REE value.
Mean daily excretion of Ca, P, and Fe were measured in 49 healthy young Koreans(23 males and 26 females) form urine and feces samples cellected for three days. Dietary intakes of the subjects during the study periods were calculated from intake records. Main results of the study are as following: 1) Mean daily urinary, fecal, and total Ca excretions were 162$\pm$20mg, 346$\pm$39mg, and 508$\pm$50mg, respectively in males and 154$\pm$16mg, 262$\pm$26mg, and 416$\pm$24mg, respectively in females. The mean values of the two groups were not significantly different. 2) Mean daily urinary, fecal, and total P excretions were 751$\pm$45mg, 384$\pm$26mg and 1135$\pm$56mg, respectively in males and 552$\pm$29mg, 335$\pm$34mg and 894$\pm$50mg, respectively in females. Urinary and total P excretion in males were significantly higher than females(p<0.01), but such differences disappeared when the excretions were calculated per kg body weight. 3) mean daily fecal Fe excretions were 12.8$\pm$0.9mg in males and 10.1$\pm$0.8mg in females. The mean value in males was significantly higher than that in females(p<0.05) but when calculated per kg body weight, both groups excreted 0.2mg/kg body weight. 4) Mean daily intake levels of the minerals estimated from three day food intake records were Ca 543mg, P 1136mg, and Fe 14.3mg in males and Ca 533mg, P 869mg, Fe 10.8mg in females. These intake levels seem to be sufficient to supply the daily losses of the study subjects except P in females. However, the problem of estimating dietary intake levels by food intake record should be recognized. Especially females in the study are in menstration age and their Fe losses in the menstration (estimated to be 0.5mg of available Fe per day) should be also supplied in the diet.
This study was designed to analyze morphological characteristics of Korean young adults, norms and standard deviation of variables, sexual differences, correlationship between each area of face and correlationship between hard tissue and soft tissue. The primary sample consisted of 45 males and 57 females who were early and middle twenties and had acceptable profile, no history of previous orthodontic treatment, absence of remarkably large overjet and overbite, full complement of permanent teeth, Class I skeletal and dental relationships and good vertical facial proportions. Their cephalograms were analyzed morphologically with a computer morphometrics. Then the final sample - 25 males and 38 females - were selected within 1 S.D. of E-line, ANB, P/A facial height ratio, Interincisal angle, L1 to A-Pog, ODI and APDI. The results of the study were as follows: 1 In the form and proportion of facial skeleton there were no significant differences between males and females, but in the size males were larger than females. 2. The dental protrusion patterns had no significant sexual difference and no significant correlationship between protrusion of upper lip and inclination of upper incisor. But mentolabial angle had positively correlated with interincisal angle and negatively with inclination of upper and lower incisor. 3. In the relationship between nose and soft-tissue profile, males were larger than females in nasal length, height and angular measurements. 4. In analysis of soft-tissue profile, males were larger than females in the length and thickness. In the angular measurements and proportion of soft-tissue profile, there were no significant differences between males and females.
This study aims to categorize age groups for shoes manufacturing including shoes size and boot tree development for Koreans. In order to carry out the research, the characteristics of different parts of foot in relation to size are analyzed according to age and sex, making use of human body measurement database. As a result of statistical analysis, it was found that the measurement items such as foot length, metatarsal tibiale, foot breadth and instep circumference of a person reached the range of standard deviation and average numerical figures of an adult group (18-24) from the age of 14 in men's case, and from 12 for women's case, which indicates the time of completion of their foot growth. Based on these findings where males of 14 years old and females of 12 are within similar measurement range to adults, it is necessary to categorize the age groups for shoe sizing system into the following four groups: males 13 years old or under, males 14 years old or over, females 11 years or under, and females 12 years or over. The proportional measurement produced by dividing each measurement item of foot parts by foot length was compared in an independent samples t-test, and there were meaningful differences according to different foot shapes of the two age groups of males 13 or under - males 14 or over, and females 11 or under - females 12 or over. Also, the independent samples t-test for the age groups of males 13 or under - females 11 or under, and males 14 or over - female 12 or over, showed similar meaningful differences, which indicates the differences in foot shapes of male and female during the period of growth.
