  • The technology of preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance is widely applied to ships in order to maintain the good voyageable condition. One of the most important fields of marine engineering is to seek the maximum availability and to solve the stochastic maintenance problem such that the cost for corrective maintenance is minimized. Accordingly, for the purpose of making the most suitable maintenance schedule which minimizes the expected cost function, this paper suggests the method to grasp the failure characteristics by the ship's maintenance data that are collected from the past. And, suggests the method to estimate the optimal maintenance interval by using the dynamic programming and the cumulative hazard rate function attained from the maintenance data.

  • Various maintenance programs and techniques have been implemented for roating machineries, since machines were invented for commerical use. The earliest type of maintenance was run-to-failure, where the machine was run until a fault caused to fail in service. It was obviously an expensive approach due to the unpredictability of the machine condition. Another type is the periodic maintenance, where machines are disassembled and overhauled on regular schedules. With the advent of reliable data collectors including FFT analyzer and developing of versatile supporting software such as ExpertALERT system, the predictive maintenance is known to be the most feasible maintenance type these days. The vibration analysis enables for a maintenance crew to find the exact cause of fault on a machine and to make a proper maintenance schedule with a trend analysis. The predicitive maintenance is considered to be the most important part of pro-active maintenance.

The Effects of Slab Size on Pavement Life Cycle Cost

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of expansion joint spacing (slab size) on the life cycle costs of owning Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) airfield pavements. Previous research has shown that slab size has a statistically significant impact on pavement performance. A probabilistic life cycle cost analysis was performed to determine if the effect of slab size on pavement performance would affect the total cost of ownership of PCC pavements. Data from 48 Pavement Condition Index (PCI) inspections of military and civilian airfields were used to develop probability-of-distress-by-condition curves, which were then used to develop probabilistic cost-of-repair-by-condition curves. A present worth life cycle cost analysis was then performed for various slab sizes, using construction costs, rehabilitation costs, and maintenance costs. Maintenance costs were determined by assuming a condition deterioration rate appropriate for each slab size and applying the cost-by-condition curves. The probabilistic cost-of-repair-by-condition curves indicated that smaller slabs are more expensive to repair on a unit cost basis. Life cycle cost analysis showed that larger slabs have a higher total cost of ownership than smaller slabs due to a faster rate of deterioration.

  • PURPOSES : Pavement Management System contains the data that describe the condition of the road. Under limited budget, the data can be utilized for efficient plans. The objective of this research is to develop a mixed integer program model that maximizes remaining durable years (or Lane-Kilometer-Years) in road maintenance planning. METHODS : An optimization model based on a mixed integer program is developed. The model selects a cluster of sectors that are adjacent to each other according to the road condition. The model also considers constraints required by the Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation. They select two lanes at most not to block the traffic and limit the number of sectors for one-time construction to finish the work in given time. We incorporate variable cost constraints. As the model selects more sectors, the unit cost of the construction becomes smaller. The optimal choice of the number of sectors is implemented using piecewise linear constraints. RESULTS : Data (SPI) collected from Pavement Management System managed by Seoul Metropolitan City are fed into the model. Based on the data and the model, the optimal maintenance plans are established. Some of the optimal plans cannot be generated directly in existing heuristic approach or by human intuition. CONCLUSIONS:The mathematical model using actual data generates the optimal maintenance plans.

Comparison of Asset Management Approaches to Optimize Navigable Waterway Infrastructure

  • An estimated investment gap of $176 billion needs to be filled over the next ten years to improve America's inland waterway transportation systems. Many of these infrastructure systems are now beyond their original 50-year design life and are often behind in maintenance due to funding constraints. Therefore, long-term maintenance strategies (i.e., asset management (AM) strategies) are needed to optimize investments across these waterway systems to improve their condition. Two common AM strategies include policy-driven maintenance and performance-driven maintenance. Currently, limited research exists on selecting the optimal AM approach for managing inland waterway transportation assets. Therefore, the goal of this study is to provide a decision model that can be used to select the optimal alternative between the two AM approaches by considering key uncertainties such as asset condition, asset test results, and asset failure. We achieve this goal by addressing the decision problem as a single-criterion problem, which calculates each alternative's expected value and certain equivalence using allocated monetary values to determine the recommended alternative for optimally maintaining navigable waterways. The decision model considers estimated and predicted values based on the current state of the infrastructure. This research concludes that the performance-based approach is the optimal alternative based on the expected value obtained from the analysis. This research sets the stage for further studies on fiscal constraints that will effectively optimize these assets condition.

  • In this paper, a new method for the bridge maintenance is proposed to overcome the limit of the existing methods and to implement the preventive bridge maintenance system. The proposed method can establish the lifetime optimum maintenance strategy of the deteriorating bridges considering the life-cycle performance as well as the life-cycle cost. The lifetime performance of the deteriorating bridges is evaluated by the safety index based on the structural reliability and the condition index detailing the condition state. The life-cycle cost is estimated by considering not only the direct maintenance cost but also the user and failure cost. The genetic algorithm is applied to generate a set of maintenance scenarios which is the multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem related to the life-cycle cost and performance. The study examined the proposed method by establishing a maintenance strategy for the existing bridge and its advantages. The result shows that the proposed method can be effectively applied to deciding the bridge maintenance strategy.

A Study on the Method of Computing Standard Wartime Maintenance Man-Hour Incorporating Wartime Maintenance Condition (전장 정비환경을 고려한 전시 표준정비인시 산출방안 연구)

  • In a military maintenance system, the standard maintenance man-hour of weapon systems is a tool to estimate the maintenance capabilities of maintenance units, provide standards for determining the maintenance needs and workload, and provide basic data for establishing a maintenance plan. The standard maintenance man-hours of major weapon systems have already been derived and used, but the standard maintenance man-hour in a wartime maintenance environment has not been computed. Therefore, the standard wartime maintenance man-hours need to be derived and This study proposes a process and method of computing the maintenance man-hours. In addition, this work suggests the criteria of collecting and screening data that is necessary for estimating the standard maintenance man-hours and introduces a methodology for analyzing the characteristics of maintenance man-hour distribution in the process. The proposed process first designs a model that reflects the wartime maintenance environment, selects statistical techniques, collects maintenance data, analyzes the descriptive statistics, estimates the distribution, and finally presents representative values of maintenance man-hour. Based on the proposed method, the standard wartime maintenance man-hours of the four weapon systems were calculated, and the distribution of the maintenance man-hours was analyzed to follow a lognormal distribution, and the method presented reliable results.

  • Traditional maintenance planning is based on a constant maintenance interval for equipment life. In order to consider economic aspect for tm based preventive maintenance, preventive maintenance is desirable to be scheduled by RCM(Reliability-Centered Maintenance) evaluation. The main objective of RCM is to reduce the maintenance cost, by focusing on the most important functions of the system and avoiding or removing maintenance actions that are not strictly necessary. So, Markov state model is utilized considering stochastic state in RCM In this paper, a Markov state model much can be used for scheduling and optimization of maintenance is presented. The deterioration process of system condition is modeled by the stepwise Markov model in detail. Also, because the system is not continuously monitored, the inspection is considered. In case study, simulation results about RCM will be shown using the real historical data of combustion turbine generating unit in Korean power systems.

  • Purpose: This article provides the efficiency test results of conducting depot maintenance. Method: ANOVA (analysis of variance) and ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) tests are conducted using data obtained from Defense Logistics Integrated Information System (DELIIS). Results: The result shows that although the effect of the depot maintenance is significant, some parts do not follow the overall effect of the depot maintenance. In order to solve the problem we provide some suggestions to be improved. Conclusion: For improving the combat readiness condition of K-1 main battle tank, the maintenance policies and regulation must be revised for the parts of the weakness. In addition, the collection way of the operation and maintenance data must be redesigned.
