  • This research proposed integrated expressway traffic management strategy using ramp metering and toll mainline metering. This research suggested a traffic signal optimization model for integrated operation of ramp and mainline metering based on Demand-Capacity Model that is used to optimize allowable input volume for ramp metering in FREQ model. The objective function of this model is sectional throughput volume maximization, and this model can calculate optimal signal timings for mainline metering and ramp metering. This study conducted an effectiveness analysis of integrated metering strategy using PARAMICS and its API. It targeted Seoul's Outer Ring Expressway between Gimpo and Siheung toll gate. As a simulation result, integrated operation of mainline and ramp metering provided more smooth traffic flow, and throughput volume of mainline increased to 14% in congested section. In addition, a queue of 400 meter was formed at metering point of toll gate. This research checked that integrated traffic management strategy facilitates more efficient traffic operation of mainline and ramp from diffused traffic congestion.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide useful information for fishermen in the manner of investigation a sinking speed of current type tuna longline gear at the North Pacific Ocean as a new developed tuna longline fishing ground. The sinking depth of mainline in connection with different basket was investigated. The experiments were also performed with different materials such as Supermansen (i.e., PE) and Hitech (i.e., PA) for the mainline to investigate the sinking depth of mainline and hooks. Furthermore, the relation between the sinking depth of hooks and catches are investigated also. The sinking depth of mainline at the first and the last shooting basket shows deeper than that of middle part of a basket due to reduced shortening ratio. The sinking depth of mainline and hook with Hitech material shows more shallow than that of Supermanse material, even the Hitech case was designed to sink deeper than that of Supermanse case. The highest catches arise at the middle part basket as the hook number 7 with around 248m sinking depth. From the results, longline with Hitech material is needed to increase the sinking force for reaching the relevant sinking depth. Moreover, the current strength at the North Pacific Ocean will be considered for further commercial fishing.

  • Most traffic congestion on a freeway occurs in the merge area, where conflicts between mainline traffic and on-ramp traffic are frequently generated. So far, research on the merge area has mainly dealt with free flow traffic and research on the congested traffic at the merge area is rare. This study investigates the relationships between mainline traffic and on-ramp traffic at three different segments of the merge area. For this purpose, new indicators based on such traffic variables as flow, speed, and density are used. The results show that a negative relationship exists between mainline and on-ramp flow. It is also found that the speed and the density of the right two lanes in the mainline traffic are significantly affected by the on-ramp flow. Based on the correlation analysis of the indicators, it is confirmed that the ramp influence area is the right two lanes of the freeway mainline. The revealed relationships between mainline and on-ramp traffic may help to analyze the capacity of the downstream freeway segment of the merging area in congested traffic. The findings of this studyalso provide a basis to develop a model that estimates the merge traffic volume in congested traffic, which is neither theoretically nor empirically sound in most other traffic flow models developed so far.

  • This work discusses simulation results for the fuzzy logic controller tested the project“Fuzzy Ramp Metering Algorithm Implementation.”The performance objectives were, in order of priority, to maximize total vehicle-miles, maximize mainline speeds, and minimize delay per vehicle while maintaining an acceptable ramp queue. In the fuzzy logic controller, the sensors from the on-ramps were helpful in maintaining reasonable ramp queue and mainline congestion because it considered these factors simultaneously. Each metered ramp had a parameter input file, which allowed the controller to be modified without recompiling the software. Consequently, maintenance costs should be minimal.

  • This study aims to develop a mainline metering strategy considering queue imbalance among lanes that can reduce congestion at a toll plaza section by managing queue caused by mainline metering. The suggested strategy considers simultaneously optimizing the number of cars in merging area and managing queue by lane. This study analyzes the effectiveness of the strategy with respect to the average travel time and the occurrence rate of spillback using the PARAMICS. The results show that the suggested strategy has an effect on reducing congestion and improving operation efficiency at toll plaza. In particular, the congestion become more intensified when the length of waiting space is shorter; however, this study shows that the suggested strategy can relieve the congestion in that condition.

  • PURPOSES : This study performs fundamental research on ramp-metering design criteria. METHODS : We carefully review previous studies in terms of ramp-metering design criteria and then consider applicability in Korea. For this, traffic simulation model is employed to analyze actual effect according to specific location of stop-line when implementing ramp-metering. RESULTS : When a stop-line moving forward with a 50m interval, travel speed at mainline relative to current stop-line location tends to decrease. However, traveling speed at approach roads increase about 5~18% under the same condition. When a stop-line location moving backward with a 50m interval, mainline travel speed increase approximately 17~32% whereas traveling speed at approach roads decrease. All cases are compared with the current stop-line location. CONCLUSIONS : We believe that both cases are useful with respect to freeway management. For example, moving forward a stop-line case can be used management for queuing area at ramp section and approach roads. Moving backward a stop-line case can be used for traffic control, focusing on mainline of freeways.

  • Access management is aimed at preserving the road's high intercity mobility. In urbanized areas, immoderate acceleration lane-length requirements restrict the accessibility of land. Therefore, there are many opinions to revise the minimum acceleration lane-length requirement. For this purpose, it is important to diagnose the effects of slow vehicles on the mainline. This study analyzed a single merging vehicle's total delay occurrence depending on the mainline traffic flow rate and merging speed. A linear relationship was observed between the mainline traffic flow rate and total delay. As a merging speed increases gradually from 40km/h to 100km/h in 20km/h intervals, the total delay decreases by 5.0, 1.6, and 5.1 times, respectively. This shows that the ideal condition with the total delay is less than 0.5 vehicle·sec when there is no speed difference between the mainline and merging vehicle. On the other hand, given the one-second response time of drivers, the total delay occurrence was slightly low when the speed difference between the mainline and merging vehicle was less than 20km/h.

  • Heights of a platform above the rail for the passenger train in the country are classified into two categories such as the low level (500mm; mainline) and the high level (1,135mm; metropolitan subway line) platforms. In order to operate similarly both a mainline railroad and a metropolitan subway line, as the requisite door safety system, it is necessary to develop the doorstep equipment of the rolling stock regardless of both the low and high level platforms. In this study, the application of doorstep equipments to use mixed with two types of platforms are examined on the supposition that the train only for the low level platform stops in the both low and high level platforms.
