Experimental Validation for the Development of Holographic Particle Velocimetry System for Spray Droplets (홀로그래피를 이용한 분무 액적 속도 측정시스템 개발을 위한 실험적 검증)

  • The Holographic Particle Velocimetry system can be a promising optical tool leer the measurements of three dimensional particle velocities. In this research, validation experiments for the development of holographic particle velocimetry system for spray droplets were conducted with measuring the velocities of glass beads on a rotating disk. Uncertainty analysis was performed to identify the sources of all relevant errors and to evaluate their magnitude. The measurement results of distance between glass beads, size, and velocities obtained with holographic method are compared reasonably well with the known values within acceptable range of errors.

  • We have examined how sensitively the extinction value determined by the method of star-count depends on such factors as the plate limit, the size of counting reseau, the non-linearity in the number distribution of stars with magnitude, and the angular resolution demanded by the given problem. We let the Poisson distribution portray the statistical nature of the countings, and chose the region containing the globule Barnard 361 as an example field. Uncertainties due to various combinations of the factors are presented in graphic forms: (1) Dynamic range in the extinction measurements is evaluated as a function of reseau size for varying plate limits. (2) Statistical errors involved in the star-count are analized in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio, the plate limit and the reseau size. (3) Systematic error due to the non-linearity in the number distribution are thoroughly analized. (4) Finally, a methodology is presented for correcting the systematic error in the observed radial density gradient. These graphs are meant to be used in selecting proper size of the reseau and in estimating errors inherent to the star-count analysis.

  • It has been widely known that geometrical or form errors of ball bearings such as ball size error, ball waviness, inner and outer race waviness due to inherent manufacturing imperfection are one of the major sources of uncontrollable non-repeatable run-out (NRRO) vibration in HDD spindle motor. NRRO in HDD is also known to be the primary cause of limiting the storage capacity of HDD. In this paper, We performed vibration analysis for NRRO a ball bearing being used in 3.5" HDD spindle motor. To theoretically estimate NRRO considering the geometrical errors of ball bearing components, a simple three degrees of freedom model was proposed and then vibration analysis for axial and radial NRRO was conducted utilizing the measured geometric imperfection of a bearing with both the waviness magnitude and phase taken into account. Effects of bearing preload and clearance on NRRO was also investigated as an effort to predict their optimum values minimizing bearing NRRO.

Validation experiments for the developed system were conducted measuring the velocities of glass beads on a rotating disk. The measurement results of distance between glass beads, size, and velocities of them using holographic method compared reasonalbly well with the known values within acceptable range of errors.

WFIRST ULTRA-PRECISE ASTROMETRY I: KUIPER BELT OBJECTS

  • I show that the WFIRST microlensing survey will enable detection and precision orbit determination of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) down to $H_{vega}=28.2$ over an effective area of ${\sim}17deg^2$. Typical fractional period errors will be ${\sim}1.5%{\times}10^{0.4(H-28.2)}$ with similar errors in other parameters for roughly 5000 KBOs. Binary companions to detected KBOs can be detected to even fainter limits, $H_{vega}=29$, corresponding to R~30.5 and effective diameters D~7 km. For KBOs H~23, binary companions can be found with separations down to 10 mas. This will provide an unprecedented probe of orbital resonance and KBO mass measurements. More than a thousand stellar occultations by KBOs can be combined to determine the mean size as a function of KBO magnitude down to H~25. Current ground-based microlensing surveys can make a significant start on finding and characterizing KBOs using existing and soon-to-be-acquired data.

  • An analysis method which calculates corrective machining information for improving the motion accuracy of linear motion guide Is proposed in this paper. The method is composed of two algorithms. One is the algorithm fur prediction of the motion errors from rail form error. The other is the algorithm for prediction of rail form error from the motion errors of table. Transfer function is utilized in each algorithm, which represents the ratio of bearing reaction force variation to unit magnitude of spatial frequencies of raid from error. As the corrective machining information is acquired from the measured motion errors of table, the method has a merit not to measure rail form error directly. Validity of the method is verified both theoretically and experimentally. By applying the method, linear motion error of test equipment is reduced from 5.97$\mu$m to 0.58$\mu$m, and reduced from 32.78arcsec to 6.21 arcsec in case of angular motion error. From the results, it is confirmed that the method is very effective to improve the motion accuracy of linear motion guide.

Effect of Fatigue on Force-Matching in the Quadriceps Muscle

  • This study examined the ability of human subjects to match a force in their quadriceps muscle during fatigue. Twenty subjects (mean age: 23.4 yrs, mean height: 167.8 cm, mean weight, 62.6 kg) were enrolled in the experiment. In the force-matching task, the quadriceps muscle generated 50% of the MVIC (maximum voluntary isometric contraction) torque under visual control and then without visual feedback. After inducing fatigue in the quadriceps muscle, the subjects were required to match 50% of the MVIC torque without visual feedback. The perceived magnitude of the force and force-matching errors were measured. 50% of the MVIC torque was perceived from 39.96 Nm in the pre-fatigue condition to 44.95 Nm in the post-fatigue condition. 50% of the MVIC torque-matching errors increased significantly from .55% in the pre-fatigue condition to 9.6% in the post-fatigue condition (p<.001). in addition, there were significantly more force-matching errors in women than in men (p<.01). In conclusion muscle fatigue can interfere with a subject's ability to match a force. This suggests that muscle fatigue may contributes to the sensitization of the proprioception.

Asymptotic Stabilization of Linear Systems with Time-Varying Input Disturbances Using Disturbance Observer Techniques and Min-Max Control Method (외란관측기법과 최대최소 제어방법을 이용한 시변 입력 외란을 갖는 선형 시스템의 점근 안정화)

  • This paper deals with asymptotic stabilization problems for linear systems with time-varying input disturbances. In order to eliminate the influence of a disturbance on the system, a disturbance observer is designed and the time-varying disturbance can be rejected using its estimated value. Since the disturbance observer is kind of low-pass filter, it has inevitably estimation errors. To eliminate the inflences on the performance due to these errors, the additional control is designed based on these estimation errors using a well-known min-max control method. It is shown that the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed. In general, the min-max control method requires the switching of control inputs and the switching magnitude of the control input is determined by the disturbance estimation error bounds. As the error bounds can be made arbitrarily small by choosing the high gain for the disturbance observer, the control method suggested in this paper can reduce the chattering phenomena as small as possible. Therefore, it has superior performance to the existing ones.

  • A large prropotion of structural failures are due to human error at the design stage of a structural engineering project, and many of these failures could have been prevented if there had been proper design checking. Analyses of the data from the 6 engineering firms and 24 professional engineer practitioners are shown on diagrams, also applicated for suggested models; overview checking. And then analyzed results of current work in this area, which examine the effects of error magnitude, are compared to the limit data obtained from the surveys. Overview checking only is analyzed of three typical design checking processes; self checking; Independent detailed checking, and overview checking.

  • A modeling of the dynamics of two cooperating robot manipulators doing assembly job such as peg-in-hole while coordinating the payload along the desired path is proposed. The system is uncertain due to the unknown mass and moment of inertia of the manipulators and the payload. To control the system, a robust control algorithm is proposed. The control algorithm includes fuzzylogic. By the fuzzy logic, the magnitude of the input torque of the manipulators is controlled not to go over the hardware saturation with keeping path tracking errors bounded.
