  • Nickel substituted manganese ferrites, $Mn_{1-x}Ni_xFe_2O_4$ ($0.0{\leq}x{\leq}0.6$), were fabricated by sol-gel method. The effects of sintering and substitution on their crystallographic and magnetic properties were studied. X-ray diffractometry of $Mn_{0.6}Ni_{0.4}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite sintered above 523 K indicated a spinel structure; particles increased in size with hotter sintering. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectrum of this ferrite sintered at 523 K could be fitted as a single quadrupole doublet, indicative of a superparamagnetic phase. Sintering at 573 K led to spectrum fitted as the superposition of two Zeeman sextets and a single quadrupole doublet, indicating both ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic phase. Sintering at 673 K and at 773 K led to spectra fitted as two Zeeman sextets due to a ferrimagnetic phase. The saturation magnetization and the coercivity of $Mn_{0.6}Ni_{0.4}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite sintered at 773 K were 53.05 emu/g and 142.08 Oe. In $Mn_{1-x}Ni_xFe_2O_4$ ($0.0{\leq}x{\leq}0.6$) ferrites, sintering of any composition at 773 K led to a single spinel structure. Increased Ni substitution decreased the ferrites' lattice constants and increased their particle sizes. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra could be fitted as the superposition of two Zeeman sextets due to the tetrahedral and the octahedral sites of the $Fe^{3+}$ ions. The variations of saturation magnetization and coercivity with changing Ni content could be explained using the changes of particle size.

  • This paper investigates the cogging torque reduction in a brushless DC(BLDC) motor having an inner-rotor with surface-mounted segment-type permanent magnets. The kind of magnets for the BLDC motor could have different waveforms of magnetization such as square, trapezoidal and sinusoidal form. This paper discusses the effect of the unsymmetrical magnetization distribution in the segment-type permanent magnet, which is able to obtain through a segment structure that the number of poles per segments is 2 ($N_p/N_s$), on the cogging torque and EMF waveform. Where the existing magnetizer fixture for the square-type magnetization is used to magnetize the magnets in two segment structures of $N_p/N_s$ = 1 and 2. The effectiveness of the proposed designs had been confirmed by comparing cogging torque, and EMF waveform between conventional and new models which are analyzed by Finite Element Method (FEM).

  • Superparamagnetic regions and magnetic anisotropic properties in randomly orientated Co nano dots(NDs) were investigated as a function of dot diameter, spacing, and density. The Co NDs were fabricated by intentionally exposing a laser source on ultra thin film. Various dot sizes are ultimately realized by changing laser power, scan condition, and intial film thickness. Magnetic hysteresis loops, angle-dependent magnetization, and temperature dependence magnetization of the Co NDs were measured with a superconducting quantum interference device. The analysis of magnetization and hysteresis loops was effectively used to determine superparamagnetic regions of the Co NDs. Up to now, the experimentally observed results repeal that room temperature superparamagnetic limit of our Co NDs was about 30 nm in diameter, with the confirmation of high resolution transmission electron microscope.

  • In order to the magnetization and magnetic entropy change for superparamagnetic ferrite nanoparticles, ultrafine cobalt ferrite particles were synthesized using a mircoemulsion method. The peak of X-ray diffraction pattern corresponds to a cubic spinel structure with the lattice constant 8.40 $\AA$. The average particle size, determined from X-ray diffraction line-broadening using Scherrer's, is 7.9 nm. The maximal magnetizations measured at 5 and 300 K are 24.3 emu/g and 17.2 emu/g, respectively. Superparamagnetic behavior of the sample is confirmed by the coincidence of the M vs. H/T plots at various temperatures. According to the thermodynamic theory, magnetic entropy change decreases with increasing temperature.

  • This paper describes a new magnetization method for non-destructive testing with magneto-optical sensor (denoted as MO sensor) which have the following characteristic : high observation sensitivity, independence of the crack orientation, and precise imaging of a complex crack geometry such as multiple cracks. When a magnetic field is applied normally to the surface of a specimen which is significantly larger than its defects, approximately the same magnetic charge per unit area occurs on the surface of the specimen. If there is a crack in the specimen, magnetic charge per unit area has the same value at the bottom of the crack. The distribution of the vertical component of the magnetic flux density, B$\_$Z/, is almost uniform over the no-crack area (denoted as B$\_$Z,BASE/), while the magnetic flux density is smaller in the surroundings of the crack(denoted as B$\_$Z,CRACK/) If B$\_$Z, BASE/ is a bit larger than the saturated magnetic flux density of the MO sensor (B$\_$s/) , then small magnetic domains occur over the crack area and a large domain over the non-crack area because B$\_$Z,CRACK/ is smaller than B$\_$s/.

  • The control and reduction of the magnetization of naval vessel is important technologies for safety against torpedo and sea mine installed magnetic sensors. In general, we used to conduct as a magnetic treatment for permanent magnetization reduction and to compensate induced magnetization using on-board-degaussing system for the naval vessel's magnetic stealth. Navies have operated magnetic treatment facility in order to protect from sea mines. LIGNex1 Corp. has developed the magnetic treatment facility for the korea navy.

  • We have investigated the magnetic properties of $ErFe_2O_4$. Stoichiometric polycrystalline sample of $ErFe_2O_4$ was prepared by solid-state reaction method in a stream of CO/$CO_2$ gas. The X-ray power diffraction pattern shows that the diffraction peaks are indexed with respect to the rhombohedral structure with a space group of R3m. The temperature dependent magnetization for $ErFe_2O_4$ shows two-step phase transitions at about 220 and 250 K. The transition at 250 K is an antiferromagnetic transition and that at 220 K is a structural transition.

  • The Spin-dependent tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect was observed in $NiFe/Al_2O_3$/Co thin films. The samples were prepared by magnetron sputtering in a system with a base pressure of $3\times10^{-6}$Torr. the insulating $Al_2O_3$layer was prepared by r.f. plasma oxydation method of a metallic Al layer. The ferromagnetic and insulating layers were deposited through metallic masks to produce the cross pattern form. The junction has an active area of $0.3\times0.3\textrm{mm}^2$ and the $Al_2O_3$layer is deposited through a circular mask with a diameter of 1mm. It is very important that insulating layer is formed very thinly and uniformly in tunneling junction. The ferromagnetic layer was fabricated in optimum conditions and the surface of that was very flat, which was observed by AFM. Tunneling junction was confirmed through nonlinear I-V curve. $NiFe/Al_2O_3$/Co junction was observed for magnetization behavior and magnetoresistance property and magnetoresistance property is dependent on magnetization behavior and magnetoresistance property and magnetoresistance property is dependent on magnetization behavior of t재 ferromagnetic layer. The maximum magnetoresistance ratio was about 6.5%.

  • The structure and magnetic properties of Fe-Ni-N/Cu multilayered films, prepared by the DC magnetron sputter, as a function of different thicknesses of Fe-Ni-N ($t_{FeNiN}$) and Cu ($t_Cu$) layers have been studied by the methods of x-ray diffraction and measurement of magnetic moment. It has been found that the enhancement of (200) orientation in Fe-Ni-N layers is observed at the ratio of layer thickness with about $t_{FeNiN}/t_{Cu}$ $\underline{\simeq}$ 3.75. The reduction of magnetization due to the formation of interdiffusion near the interface is explained by means of the dead layer model. The temperature dependence of magnetization exhibits the feature of Blochs $T^{\frac{2}{3}}$ law. The layer thickness dependence of Curie temperature has been discussed by critical temperature theory of Heisenberg model.

  • Translation induced by the field-gradient force is being observed for a single ferromagnetic iron grain and a ferrimagnetic grain of a ferrite sample ($CuFe_2O_4$). From measurements on the translation, precise saturated magnetization of $M_S$ is possible for a single grain. The method is based on the energy conservation rule assumed for the grain during its translation and the grain is translated through a diffuse area under microgravity conditions. The results of the two materials indicate that a field-induced translation of grain bearing spontaneous moment is generally determined by a field-induced potential $-mM_SH(x)$ where m denotes the mass of sample. According to the above translations, the detection of $M_S$ is not interfered by any signals from the sample holder. The $M_S$ measurement does not require m value. By observing translations resulting from fieldinduced volume forces, the magnetization of a single grain is measurable irrespective of its size; the principle is also applicable to measuring susceptibility of diamagnetic and paramagnetic materials.
