  • Magnetic transmission soft X-ray microscopy has been used to study element-specifically the magnetization reversal behavior of ${(Co_{84}Cr_{16})}_{87}Pt_{l3}$ alloy thin films with a lateral resolution of 35 nm. Our results indicate that the magnetization switching is carried out by a random nucleation process that can be attributed to the reversal of individual grains. We found evidence of a large distribution of the switching fields at the nanogranular length scale, which has to be considered seriously for applications of CoCrPt systems as magnetic high density storage materials.

  • The at loss is an important issue in the design of superconducting cables and transformers. In these devices the Bi-2222 tapes are usually placed face-to-face. In such arrangements ac loss is influenced by adjacent tapes. The effect is investigated by measuring the magnetization loss in the stacked conductor, which consists of various numbers of Bi-2223 tapes. For the single tape the magnetization loss in perpendicular field is larger than that in parallel field by about a factor 10. This agrees well with the prediction for hysteresis loss in slab and strip models. For the stacked conductor in perpendicular field the magnetization loss at low fields is greatly decreased, compared to the loss of the single tape. However the loss at high fields is nearly unaffected. This behavior is well described by the slab model.

  • Polycrystalline samples of LaFe$O_3$-BaTi$O_3$ were synthesized to examine the structural and magnetic behavior. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the ceramics had tetragonal symmetry with less tetragonal strain (c/a) than BaTi$O_3$. The magnetic hysteresis measured at room temperature suggested that the magnetic nature deviates from that of the parent LaFe$O_3$, which has antiferromagentic with a G-type spin structure. Improved magnetic behavior of the solid solution compound might be due to the increase in the canting angle of the spin. The presence of oxygen vacancies and fluctuating Fe valence, arising from the substitution of $Ba^{2+}$ and $Ti^{4+}$ at the A- and B-sites of the lattice, might contribute to bulk magnetization. The temperature dependent magnetization indicated that magnetization was higher at low temperatures and showed a decreasing trend with increasing temperature to room temperature. The magnetic transition temperature of these samples was 665 K and 743 K for the mixed system and LaFe$O_3$, respectively.

  • Recently, there has been much interest in magnetic thin film patterned in submicron scale because of possible ultrahigh density storage media or logical device applications [1-3]. Various geometries such as rectangle, circle, ring and ellipse type dots have been studied to find the shape showing stable switching behavior from repeated cycles. However, rectangle and circle types may not be suitable for device applications because they have two uncontrollable different magnetization reversal modes: C state and S state, resulting in different coercivity and irreproducible switching[4]. • This paper examines permanent magnet eddy current couplings and brakes. Specifically, the effect of permanent magnet magnetization patterns on the magnetic field and force production is investigated. The eddy current couplings and brakes employ high energy-product neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets that act on iron-backed copper drums to provide torque transfer from motor to load without mechanical contact. A 2-dimensional finite element modeling is performed to predict the electromagnetic behavior and the torque-speed characteristics of permanent magnet type eddy current couplings and brakes under constant speed operation.

  • In order to pinpoint the different factors responsible for magnetization reversal, we performed simulation using OOMMF micromagnetic package for rectangular shaped permalloy element having length of $1{\mu}m$, width 50-100 nm and thickness 15-80 nm with length to width ratio L/W>4. Interestingly an increase in coercivity with thickness is found for every width below a critical thickness. With increasing width and thickness, the distinct behavior of coercivity, hysteresis loops and reversal mechanism are presented. Vortex end domains are observed during the magnetization reversal beyond particular thickness, where the three dimension reversal mechanism is expected to begin, causing a sudden increase in coercivity.
