  • Recently fishing industry is interested in efficiency and automation to acquire the international competitive power of national fishing industry. As an automation device of fishing boat, there are electric compasses using GPS and terrestrial magnetic sensor. Electric compass can be minimum size, high effectiveness with keeping the characteristic of a magnetic compass. This can be used a heading angle sensor to construct auto-navigation system in a small size ship. This paper develop electronic compass system that has serial output signal in NMEA 0183 and demonstrates the possibility of the electronics compass in navigation system for a small sized ship.

Performance Evaluation of Low Frequency Magnetic Field Shielding by Eddy-Current (와전류에 의한 저주파 자기장 차폐 성능 평가)

  • In this paper, the shielding effectiveness of aluminum shielded room with using eddy-current is calculated and measured after fabricated. The size and thickness of shielded room are decided as $2.4{\times}2.4{\times}2.4[m^3]$ and 12[mm] after AC shielding characteristics by eddy-current of conductive materials is analyzed. To verify the shielding effectiveness, a rectangular helmholtz coil is fabricated to generate magnetic field of 1.37[${\mu}T$] and measured magnetic field inside shielding room for 0.01~10[Hz]. According to calculations and measurements, AC Shielding effectiveness by eddy-current in aluminum is very small for 0.01~2[Hz] and 5 times to 11 times for 5~10[Hz].

  • High saturation magnetization (B$\_$s/) and excellent high frequency characteristics of magnetic thin films has been recognized as the most important requirement for further miniaturization and higher frequency operation in magnetic devices, such as magnetic heads and magnetic sensors. Up to now, Fe-X-N (X =Ti, Hf, and Al etc.) films with B$\_$s/ of 15 ∼ 19 kG and coercivity (H$\_$c/) of 0.5 ∼ 5.0 Oe have been successfully fabricated and proven to satisfy various requirements as a potential candidate for thin film head materials.   • This paper describes the features of electric and magnetic fields produced by lightning discharges. The measuring system consists of fast electric field sensor, crossed-loop magnetic field sensors, signal processing circuit, A/D converter and data acquisition equipment with a 12bit resolution and 10[MS/s] sampling rate. The frequency bandwidth and responsitivity of the electric field measuring system were 40[Hz]${\sim}$2.6 [MHz] and 2.08 (V/m/mV) and those of the magnetic field measuring system were 400[Hz]${\sim}$1[MHz] and 2.78[nT/mV], respectively. The electric and magnetic fields produced by lightning discharges were observed, and the features and parameters of the waveforms were analyzed.

  • In this paper, an estimation system of vehicle position and orientation on magnetic lane, which is a parameter of the steering controller for automated lane following is described. To verify that the magnetic dipole model could be applied to a magnetic unit paved in roadway, the analysis of the model is compared with the data of 3-axis magnetic field measured experimentally. The sensor location could be estimated by analysis of the model based on experimental data. For the magnetic lane model merged magnetic unit, the relation of sensor location and magnetic field is acquired experimentally. The proposed estimation of vehicle position and orientation is adopted to automated lane following by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we developed and implemented the geological magnetic filter for the improvements of the signal to noise ratio of the magnetic detection system. Using the geological magnetic filter, we can remove the coherent noises in the time domain and improve the signal to noise ratio of the magnetic detection system. Numerical simulation results show that geological magnetic filter can excellently remove the sensor misalignment effects and the regular short range local noise as well as it delete the coherent noises. We confirmed that the geological magnetic filter improved the signal to noise ratio about 19dB and deleted the coherent noises with restoring the source magnetic signal through experiments by implemented system.

  • This study focused on the charateristic of magnetic fluids, the viscosity deviation of magnetic fluids due to temperature changes, and fabrication of a 'purely' liquid type microvalve. The viscosity of magnetic fluids decreases sharply during increasing of temperature. The viscosity of magnetic fluids is rated 1,000 cP at the room temperature and 25 cP when the temperature reaches $100^{\circ}C$. Briefly, it is remarkable that the fluid flow can be controlled by the temperature and this characteristic can be adopted to the microfluidics as a microvalve. The fabrication of a liquid type microvalve is more easy than solid state microvalves and which can increase an efficiency of the controlability with respect to the thermo-pneumatic micropump which is studied broadly for many years. When the magnetic fluid used as a sealant for high level sealing, the pressure leakage is less than solid state microvalve. The experimental results show that the pressure drop in microchannel, filled with the magnetic fluid, is significant in the temperature range of $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and this result explains why the use of magnetic fluids is possible as a microvalve searcher uses this characteristics. Research on MFL PIG Design for the Inspection of Underground Gas Pipeline (지하매설 가스관의 검사를 위한 누설자속탐상 PIG 설계에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the magnetic flux leakage(MFL) type non-destructive testing(NDT) system to detect the 3D defects in underground gas pipe. Magnetic systems with permanent magnets and yokes are analyzed by 3D non-lineal finite element method(FEM) with optimum design. In case of under-saturation of gas pipe, sensing signals are too weak to detect. In case of over-saturation, the changes of the sensing signals are too low to detect the defects sensitively. So, the operating points of the magnetic system are optimized to increase the changes of the MFL signals. The effects of the depth and size of the defects on the sensing signals are analyzed to define the range and resolution of the MFL sensors. To increase the sensor's sensitivity, the back-yoke sensors are introduced and tested.

  • In order to measure magnetic field difference, we have constructed a fluxgate magnetometer which is based on the measurement of apparent coreci ve field strength from the magnetizing current of two sensors. 'Co-based amorphous ribbon, which has square shape of ac hysteresis loop, was used as core material. Two sensors have 315 turns of the primary and the secondary windings respectively, and core size of 2 mm wide and 30 mm long. The primary windings are connected parallel to measure external magnetic field difference and the secondary windings serieally for the averaged magnetic induction of the cores. The constructed magnetometer could measure magnetic field difference with sensitivity of $1.6{\times}10^{6}V/T$ and resolution of 1 nT at 1 Hz bandwidth.
