  • Here, we review the various methods for the preparation of vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) films and nanowires, and their potential applications to the sensors such as gas sensor, strain sensor, and temperature sensor. $VO_2$ is an interesting material on account of its easily accessible and sharp Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) at ${\sim}68^{\circ}C$ in the bulk. The MIT is also triggered by the electric field, stress, magnetic field etc. This paper involves exceptionally sensitive hydrogen sensors based on the catalytic process between hydrogen molecules and Pd nanoparticles on the $VO_2$ surface, and fast responsive sensors based on the self-heating effects which leads to the phase changes of the $VO_2$. These features will be seen in this paper and can enable strategies for the integration of a $VO_2$ material in advanced and complex functional units such as logic gates, memory, FETs for micro/nano-systems as well as the sensors.

  • For monitoring of the civil and building structure, optical fiber sensors are very convenient. The fiber sensors are very small and do not disturb the structural properties. They also have several merits such as electro-magnetic immunity, long signal transmission, good accuracy and multiplicity of one sensor line. Strain measurement technologies with fiber optic sensors have been investigated as a part of smart structure. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the monitoring of beam-column joints of structures. We expect that the fiber optic sensors replace electrical strain gauges. The commercial electric strain gauges show good stability und dominate tile strain measurement market. However, they lack durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring of the structures. In order to apply the strain gauges, we only have to attach them to the surfaces of the structures. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using fiber optic Bragg grating sensors to joint structure. The sensors show nice response to the structural behavior of the joint.

  • North indicating azimuth angle sensors have been used in airplanes, ships traditionally and nowadays employed in smart phones. For the azimuth and roll angle measurement of the sensor, 3-axis acceleration sensor was added to the 3-axis magnetic field sensor. In this work, we have constructed a measuring system for the measurement of the magnetic field and the angle uncertainty of the magnetic field sensors. Measuring system could be useful not only in non-magnetic laboratory but also in normal laboratory, we constructed small size of 3-axis Helmholtz coils for the compensation environment magnetic field (Earth magnetic field and magnetic field from building) and the generation of magnetic field for the test of magnetic field sensor. The constructed measuring system could compensate environment magnetic field below 10 nT level and generate 3-dimensional magnetic field with magnitude uncertainty of 0.2 % and angle error of $0.2^{\circ}$ within the volume of ${\pm}30mm$ diameter at center of Helmholtz coils. For the conformation of developed measuring system, We tested commercially available 3-axis magnetometer and heading sensor.

  • In this paper, the feedforward control with least mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm is proposed and examined to reduce rotating error by runout of an active magnetic bearing system. Using eddy-current type gap sensors for control, the electrical runout caused by non-uniform material properties of sensor target produces rotational error amplified in feedback control loop, so this runout should be eliminated to increase rotating accuracy. The adaptive feedforward controller is designed and examined its tracking performances and stability numerically with established frequency response function. The designed feedforward controller was applied to a grinding spindle system which is manufactured with a 5.5 kW internal motor and 5-axis active magnetic bearing system including 5 eddy current gap sensors which have approximately 15∼30㎛ of electrical runout. According to the experimental results, the error signal in radial bearings is reduced to less than 5 ,Urn when it is rotating up to 50,000 rpm due to applying the feedforward control for first order harmonic frequency, and corresponding vibration of the spindle is also removed.

  • A novel method to implement a birdcage-type receiving coil sensor for use in a magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) system has been demonstrated employing a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) fabrication technique. Unlike the conventional methods, the two-dimensional shape of the coil sensor is first implemented as a FPCB and then it is attached to the surface of a cylindrical supporting structure to implement the three-dimensional birdcage-type coil sensor. The proposed method is very effective to implement object-specific MRI coil sensors especially for small animal measurements in research and preclinical applications since the existing well-developed FPCB-based techniques can easily meet the requirements on accuracies and costs during coil implement process. The performances of the coil sensor verified through $^1H$ 1.5T MRI measurements for small animals and it showed excellent characteristics by providing a high spatial precision and a high signal-to-noise ratio.

  • Sensor applications of thin-film transistors (TFTs), such as photosensor, magnetic sensor, temperature sensor and chemical sensor, are introduced. Active-matrix circuits and amplifying circuits using poly-Si TFTs are integrated with these sensors to improve sensor performances and generate additional functions. These sensors may be promising applications after flat-panel displays (FPDs) in giant-micro electronics.

In general, we used to conduct as a magnetic treatment for permanent magnetization reduction and to compensate induced magnetization using on-board-degaussing system for the naval vessel's magnetic stealth. Navies have operated magnetic treatment facility in order to protect from sea mines. LIGNex1 Corp. has developed the magnetic treatment facility for the korea navy.

  • This paper describes the mathematical modeling method for the static magnetic field signature generated by a magnetic scale model. we proposed the equivalent dipole modeling method utilizing a singular value decomposition technique from magnetic field signatures by magnetic sensors are located special depths below the scale model. The proposed dipole modeling method was successfully verified through comparisons with the real measured values in our non-magnetic laboratory. Using the proposed method, it is possible to predict and analyze static magnetic field distributions at any difference depths generated from the real ships as well as a scale model ship.

  • The dynamic characteristics of flight sensors is obtained by a simple method that deploys a pendulum with a rotary encoder. The encoder output is used with kinematic relations to derive reference signals for various flight sensors, including position, velocity, attitude, and angular rate sensors as well as accelerometer and magnetic sensors. A time delay of 0.4 seconds is found in the position output of the flight sensor under investigation. A logic to compensate for the time delay using a velocity information is proposed and validated in flight tests.
