In magnetic hard disk drives, higher areal recording density requires reduction of head-disk spacing. To overcome the increase of stiction associated with reduction of head-disk spacing, a padder slider, which adds pads to slider's air bearing surface, can be one of the practical solution for sub 20 nm flying height, and even for near contact recording. This study investigated the tribological characteristics of a padder slider. A padder slider took off slowly but showed less friction force than a normal slider. The hot/dry CSS test and drag test indicated that pad wear of a padder slider was negligible. The tribological performance of disk is an important factor to be considered. In particular, less carbon overcoat layer of the disk will result in higher stiction and wear in slider/disk interface. In conclusion, a padder slider shows encouraging tribological performances for practical use in HDD.
Recently, artificially modulated magnetic multilayer materials, for examples giant magnetoresistant magnetic head materials and magneto-optic recording materials in the wavelength of a blue laser beam, attract great attention in the electronics industry due to their unique properties derived from the modulated multilayer structure. Since the multilayer structure as well as amorphous structure, is non-equilibrium state in terms of free energy, an assessment of the thermal staibility in the multilayer structure is crucially importnat both for basic research and applications. In this review paper, effective microscopic interdiffusion process in the two dimensional multilayer structure will be described in terms of steep concentration gradient effect, strain effect and magnetic transition effect.
According to demands of high density and wide band magnetic recording systems, a composite MIG head was developed. This head has the sufficient performance for use of a SD VCR : its characteristics are a good recoding performance, a low rubbing noise, a good frequency dependence of efficiency, and a good compatibility with ME tape. In a SD VCR system, the C/N value of a composite MIG head at 20.92MHz was 51 dB.
Computer simulation of sensing current effects on the magnetic and magnetoresistance properties of a crossed spin-valve head is carried out. The spin-valve head has the following layer structure: Ta (8.0 nm)/NiMn (25 nm)/NiFe (2.5 nm)/Cu (3.0 nm)/NiFe (5.5 nm)/Ta (3.0 nm), and it is 1500 nm long and 600 nm wide. Even with a high pinning field of 300 Oe and a high hard-biased field of 50 Oe, the ideal crossed spin-valve structure, which is essential to the symmetry of the output signal and hence high density recording, is not realized mainly due to large interlayer magnetostatic interactions. This problem is solved by applying a suitable magnitude of sensing currents along the length direction generating magnetic fields in the width direction. The ideal spin-valve head is expected to show good symmetry of the output signal. This has not been shown explicitly in the present simulation, however, The reason for this is possibly related to the simple assumption used in this calculation that each magnetic layer consists of a single domain.

We propose non-DC-free generalized PRML (GPRML) that are suppressed DC contents for matching to the response of perpendicular magnetic recording channel with a ring-head. In addition, DC-free encoding is considered to prevent low-frequency disturbances. The SNR performance is obtained by combining the various PRML channels with DC-free and non-DC-free codes during the normalized recording density increases from 2.5 to 3.5. The GPRML detections without using DC-free code get SNR gains more than 1dB compared to the conventional PRML systems at 10/sup -5/BER. We confirmed that the rate 127/136 DC-free coded GPRML systems show good performances compared with the 16/17 non-DC-free coded GPRML systems. In results, DC-free coded GPRML detections get gains about 1.4dB and 2.0dB at the density of 3.3 and 3.5, respectively.
AlN thin films containing various amounts of Co, AlN-Co, and Al-Co alloy particles were prepared using a two-facing-target type dc reactive sputtering (TFTS) system. The as-deposited films exhibited the variable nature expected from an AlN-rich phase, and an amorphous-like phase, depending on the Co content in the films. Specific favorable microstructures were prepared by optimizing annealing conditions. Those microstructures and their magnetic properties and resistivity were investigated. As-deposited films showed very small saturation magnetization and an amorphous-like structure. However, when annealed, the as-deposited amorphous-like phase decomposes into phases of AlN, Co and Al-Co. These annealing induced changes in the microstructure improve the magnetization and resistivity of the films. Further improvement of soft magnetic properties could lead to the material being used for high density magnetic recording head material.
Dropouts in magnetic media are a primary quality deficiency which is detrimental to magnetic signal quality and thus the major impediment to error-free recording, especially in high density digital recorders. The specific form of defects and causes found to be responsible for signal dropouts occurring in magnetic tape were studied. Dropout occurred when the RF signal falls to low level due to the various types of surface defects. However, the fall in the level of the RF signal in gravure roll coated tapes was most often caused by foreign particles adhering to the magnetic tape. It was also shown from the present study that scattered particles trapped under the tape surface or put on the top can lift it as it crosses the head, creating a spherical tent shaped defect and causing a temporary signal drop. Dropout producing substances were identified through optical and microchemical analyses. The results were correlated with measured electrical signal losses combined with analytical microscopy to clarify source identification of defects.

In this paper the dynamic characteristics of self acting air lubricated slider bearing of hard disk/head system are investigated. The dynamic equations of magnetic head mechanism considering both parallel and pitch motion and the time dependent modified Reynolds equation are analyzed and the dynamic pressure distribution of air film is numerically calculated in frequency domain by small perturbation method and finite difference scheme with variable grid. The dynamic response of the slider spacing is obtained accordingly as the moving recording surface vibrates in parallel mode.

Microcontamination caused by particle deposition on the head disk interface threatens the reliability of hard disk drive. Design of slider rail to control contamination becomes an important issue in magnetic recording. In this paper, how particles adhere to the slider and the disk is examined. To investigate accumulation mechanism of the particles, trajectory of the particles in a slider/disk interface is simulated with considering various forces including drag force, gravitational force, Saffman lift force, and electrostatic force. It is found that the charged particles can easily adhere to the slider or disk surface, if an electric field exists between the slider and the disk. It is supposed that the vertical motion of the particles should be related with not only Saffman force but also electrostatic force.
