In order to predict depth of the pile forward modeling and inversion of magnetic logging data was conducted by using a finite line of dipoles model. The horizontal component as well as the vertical component of magnetic fields can be measured in the borehole, and the magnetic anomalies can be obtained by subtracting the Earth's magnetic field from the measurement. The magnetic anomalies of the pile are considered as vector sum of induced magnetization due to the Earth's magnetic field and remnant magnetization possessed by steel strings in the pile. The magnetic anomalies are used as input data for inversion from which the length, the magnetic moment per unit length, and the dip angle of the pile can be obtained. From the inversion of synthetic noisy data, and the data obtained from the field model test it is found that the driving depth of the pile can be determined as close to the order of measuring interval (5∼10㎝). It is also found that the resultant magnetic anomalies due to an individual steel string in the pile are almost same as those due to a group of steel strings located at the center of the pile. The magnetic logging method also can be used for locating reinforced bars, pipes, and steel casings.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging has been considered one of the most complicated nevertheless, one of the most powerful logging methods for the characterization on of both rocks and natural fluids in formation. NMR measures magnetized signals (polarization and relaxation) between the properties of hydrogen nucleus called magnetic moment and applied magnetic fields. The measured data set contains two important petrophysical properties such as density of hydrogen in the fluids inside the pore space and the distinct decay rate for fluid type. Therefore, after the proper data processing, key petrophysical information, not only the quantities and properties of fluids but also supplies of rock characterization in a porous medium, could be archived. Thus, based on this information, several ongoing researches are being developed in estimating aspects of reservoir productivity information, permeability and wettability since it is the key to having correct interpretation. This study goes through the basic theory of NMR at first, and then reviews NMR logging tools as well as their technical characteristics. This paper also briefly discusses the basic knowledge of NMR simulation algorithm by using Random walk.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging has become an important technique for formation evaluation, detecting interaction signals between H protons and applied magnetic fields. Measured decay signals called relaxation, contain important information about density of H protons and different decay rate due to its fluid type in the sensitive area. Thus, petrophysical information such as porosity, permeability and wettability can be estimated through the interpretation of the decay signals. Many researches on random walk simulation have been published, since a simulation method based on random walk for solving exponential decays was adapted in the early of 1950. This study first makes a review on NMR simulation researches, explains two most important methods: simulation with or without considering magnetic field gradient. Lastly, the study makes a comparison between NMR simulation responses with and without magnetic field gradient to show the importance to consider magnetic gradient to analyze the effects of magnetic gradients on NMR responses.
Interpretations of 3-component magnetic logging data obtained for a reinforced bar as a model of the line of the magnetic dipoles are conducted using a least squared inversion technique. The length of the bar is 1.12 m, sampling interval is 0.05 m, the distance between the bar and the borehole is 0.3 m, and the top of the bar is fixed at 0 m of depth. The bar is set to be approximately vertical. Magnetic anomalies smoothed with FFT are used as input data for the inversion. For the interpretation of magnetic logging data the depth to the top, the length, the magnetic moment per unit length, the direction of the magnetization (declination and inclination), and the bearing and plunge of the line of magnetic dipoles are left as unknown parameters. The comparison of the results obtained from the individual inversion of the horizontal component or the vertical component of the magnetic anomalies, and those from the simultaneous inversion of horizontal and vertical component of the magnetic anomalies shows that there exist some disagreements between each inversion result. The depth to the bottom of the bar, which is actually 1.12 m, is estimated as 1.18 m, and the inclination of the magnetization is estimated as -76°by simultaneous inversion. The negative value of the inclination indicates that the strength of the remnant magnetization is much greater than that of the induced magnetization, so that the direction of the resultant magnetization points to the top of the bar.

Ground subsidence has occurred in the downtown of Muan-eup in Korea. Integrated geophysical survey, including two-dimensional resistivity, CSMT(Controlled source magnetotelluric), magnetic, borehole logging, GPR and resistivity tomography, has been conducted to investigate the cause of subsidence and ground conditions. Since the target area is in the city downtown, there were no spaces for surface geophysical methods. To get regional geology and to facilitate the detailed geophysical interpretation in the survey area, two-dimensional resistivity, CSMT and magnetic surveys have been applied in the outer region of the downtown. From these results, we could accurately define the Gwangju fault system and estimate the geologic conditions in the downtown. For the detailed survey of the downtown area, resistivity tomography and borehole logging data have been acquired using a few tens of densely located boreholes. Among these survey results, borehole logging data provided the guide to classification of the rock type and we could define the geologic boundary of granite and limestone formations. From the resistivity tomograms of 42 sections, which are densely located enough to be interpreted in a three-dimensional manner, we could delineate the possible weak zones or cavities in the limestone formations. In particular, resistivity tomograms in the subsided area showed the real image of ground subsidence. The map of hazardous zone has been derived from the joint interpretation of these survey results and we could provide the possible reinforcement strategy in this area.
Since the amplitudes of spin echo train in nuclear magnetic resonance logging (NMRL) are small and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also very low, this paper puts forward an improved de-noising algorithm based on wavelet transformation. The steps of this improved algorithm are designed and realized based on the characteristics of spin echo train in NMRL. To test this improved de-noising algorithm, a 32 points forward model of big porosity is build, the signal of spin echo sequence with adjustable SNR are generated by this forward model in an experiment, then the median filtering, wavelet hard threshold de-noising, wavelet soft threshold de-noising and the improved de-noising algorithm are compared to de-noising these signals, the filtering effects of these four algorithms are analyzed while the SNR and the root mean square error (RMSE) are also calculated out. The results of this experiment show that the improved de-noising algorithm can improve SNR from 10 to 27.57, which is very useful to enhance signal and de-nosing noise for spin echo train in NMRL.

Gas transmission pipelines are often inspected and monitored using the magnetic flux leakage method. An inspection vehicle known as a "pig" is launched into the pipeline and conveyed along the pipe by the pressure of natural gas. The pig contains a magnetizer, an array of sensors and a microprocessor-based data acquisition system for logging data. This paper describes magnetic flux leakage (MFL) signal processing used for detecting mechanical damages during an in-line inspection. The overall approach employs noise removal and clustering technique. The proposed method is computationally efficient and can easily be implemented. Results are presented and verified by field tests from an application of the signal processing.
KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) launched a new project to develop the low-temperature geothermal water in the area showing high geothermal anomaly, north of Pohang city, for large-scale space heating. Surface geologic and geophysical surveys including Landsat 1M image analysis, gravity, magnetic, Magnetotelluric (MT) and controlled-source audio-frequency MT (CSAMT), and self-potential (SP) methods have been conducted and the possible fracture zone was found that would serve as deeply connected geothermal water conduit. In 2004, two test wells of 1.1km and 1.5km depths have been drilled and various kinds of borehole survey including geophysical logging, pumping test, SP monitoring, core logging and sample analysis have followed. Temperature of geothermal water at the bottom of 1.5km borehole reached over $70^{\circ}C$ and the pumping test showed that the reservoir contained huge amount of geothermal water. Drilling for the production well of 2 km depth is on going. After test utilization and the feasibility study, geothermal water developed from the production well is going to be provided to nearby apartments.
Geophysical survey for unconformity-type uranium deposit applied to this study area in Athabaska Basin, Canada were carried out airborne TEM and magnetic, resistivity-induced polarization (DC-IP), puser seismic reflection and well-logging method. The results of airborne survey interpreted the lithological boundary, geological structures, and conductors. Also, these results decided to main targets for ground DC-IP survey. The Low resistivity and the high chargeability slices of 3D modeling interpreted from DC-IP survey response for conductors related to hydrothermal alteration zones and fault-controlled graphitic zones occurring at the unconformity-type uranium deposit, and they confirmed by diamond drilling. Seismic results interpreted to lake bottom surface, alluvium layer and intra-sandstone faults. We suggest the resonable field data acquisition of DC-IP method on the land or the lake in Athabaska Basin.
Various geophysical methods and geological survey were applied for prospecting of geothermal resources and the attitude of volcanic body at northern part of Kumseongsan, Euiseong. They include magnetic, self-potential, radioactive and resistivity methods, temperature logging near the earth's surface and geological survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows. Various geophysical anomalies is related to the geologically Cretaceous conduit. Anomalies of resistivity and temperature logging seem to be related to the geological structure and terrestrial heat. Small radioactive and self-potential anomalies seem to be associated with chemical character of rocks. The sedimentary rocks dip steeply toward the volcanic rocks, aquifuge. Ideal geological structure for bearing ground water and geothermal resources was founded in the study area. The study area and the adjacent two hot springs area consist of Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and have similar geology.
