  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of MRI performed after excisional biopsy to diagnose residual cancer and additional lesions. Materials and Methods : A total of 16 patients who had breast cancer diagnosed by excisional biopsy underwent preoperative breast MRI between March 2005 and August 2007 were included. MRI findings were considered positive for residual cancer if focal, thick, or irregular rim enhancement or adjacent enhancing lesion was identified around the postoperative biopsy cavity. And additional lesions separated from biopsy cavity including multifocal, multicentric, or contralateral lesion were evaluated. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of MRI, comparing MRI with histopathologic finding, and the impact of MRI on surgical planning. Results : The sensitivity and specificity of MRI for detecting residual disease considering rim enhancement were 85.7%(6/7) and 55.6%(5/9). Additional lesions including multifocal, multicentric, or contralateral lesion were found in 6 patients. In 7 patients, results of MRI findings changed surgical treatment planning. Conclusion : The pattern of rim enhancement on MRI after excisional biopsy is not differential point to evaluate remnant lesion. But MRI has an important role to help the detection of multifocal or multicentric, or contralateral breast malignancies, resulting in beneficial change in surgical treatment planning.

  • Since distribution and preservation of cultural artifacts in the submarine sediments are directly affected by not only ocean currents and tides, but also their composition, it is very important to investigate geological characteristics of sediments and ocean-sediment interactions for maritime archaeological survey. Physical properties of submarine sediments, which are collected by grab sampler and vibro-corer, are analyzed in order to investigate effects of submarine environment on development of maritime archaeological survey techniques. Result of physical property analysis showed that bulk density, shear strength, and magnetic susceptibility increase with depth, while water contents and porosity decrease with depth. Since the magnetic susceptibility of bedrock is about 40 times that of submarine sediments, it might impact greatly on the response of magnetic survey. Physical properties of sediments with depth and sediment classification by Folk's ternary diagram indicate that submarine sediment mainly consists of silt, and cultural artifacts can not penetrate no deeper than 1.5 m in sediments.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of PTSD on memory function and hippocampal volume, and to identify major variables correlated to hippocampal volume and memory function. Thirty four Vietnam veterans were collected for this study, among whom eighteen were PTSD patients and sixteen were combat control subjects. The author used Impact of Event Scale(IES), Combat Exposure Scale(CES), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HDRS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Korea Memory Assessment Scale(K-MAS) was assessed for memory function. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) was used to measure hippocampal volume. There were significant differences between PTSD and Non-PTSD veterans in IES, HDRS and BDI. Significant difference was found in verbal memory and total memory of K-MAS between PTSD and Non-PTSD veterans. There was significant difference in hippocampal volume between PTSD and Non-PTSD veterans. Short term memory, verbal memory and total memory were positively correlated to hippocampal volume. Hippocampal volume was negatively correlated to IES, HDRS, and BDI. These results suggest that PTSD severity be associated with hippocampal atrophy and memory dysfunction. Reduced or smaller hippocampal volume may be preexisting risk factor for stress exposure or the development of PTSD on combat exposure.

  • We present a rare case of a pituitary adenoma revealing a sedimentation level on MRI, which has not been previously documented. This 55-year-old woman was referred with the diagnosis of craniopharyngioma. She presented with four-month history of progressive headache and visual dimness. Neurological examination revealed a bitemporal hemianopsia and decreased visual acuity. Laboratory data including endocrine examination were unremarkable. An additional three-dimensional MRI was taken for further evaluation, and demonstrated a sedimentation level within the tumor. The patient underwent transcranial removal of the tumor. About 12cc of dark-red blood was aspirated from the tumor. Histological examination revealed a pituitary adenoma with hemorrhage. Postoperatively, the patient showed gradual improvement of visual function. Considering that the pituitary adenoma is one of more common tumors that cause tumoral bleeding, a cystic sellar tumor that has a sedimentation level should be sought first for a pituitary adenoma rather than a craniopharyngioma. This may have an important impact when deciding surgical approach.

  • This paper analyzes the effect of voltage sag on distribution systems due to the connection of Electric Vehicles (EVs). In order to study the impact of the voltage sag on the power system, two scenarios have been selected in this paper. The distribution system and EVs are modeled using the Electro Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The numbers of EVs are predicted based on the number of vehicles in distribution system of Seoul. In addition, the number of EVs is set up using real-time traffic in Seoul to simulate Scenario I and II. The simulation results show that voltage sag can occur if the distribution system has more than 30% of the total number of vehicles.

  • Generally, closed slots are adopted to reduce the water friction loss in both the stator and the rotor of water filling submersible motor due to the special environment of operation. One of the obvious differences between the traditional induction motors and water filling submersible motors is that the submersible motors only need relatively smaller starting torque. This paper aims to analyze the slot leakage reactance of water filling submersible motor during starting transient operation. An improved analytical method which considered the magnetic saturation of the slot bridge and the skin effect of rotor bars is proposed. The slot permeance factor which has a direct impact on the slot leakage reactance is calculated. Then finite element models with different stator slot types are constructed and search coils are introduced to measure the slot flux linkage. Moreover, the starting performances of the models with two typical stator slots are compared and the flux leakage characteristics are obtained. Finally, the results obtained by finite element method are very close to the results obtained by analytical method.

  • In this paper we have investigated latitudinal variations of the poleward boundary of the nightside auroral oval when the magnetosphere is hit by an enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure front. We used precipitating particle data obtained from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites to identify the locations of the boundary before and after enhanced pressure impacts. The boundary locations are represented by a parameter called "b5e". After performing the analysis for a number of events, we found that the basic effect of the solar wind pressure increase impact is often (but not always) to move the poleward boundary of the nightside auroral oval poleward. However, this effect can be often modified by other factors, such as simultaneous variations of the interplanetary magnetic field with a pressure increase, and thus the boundary response is not necessarily a poleward shift in many cases. We demonstrate this with specific examples, and discuss other possible complicating factors.

  • As a method of variable valve train(VVT), Electro-Mechanical Valve(EMV) has been studied. Compared with conventional VVT system, the EMV system has a relatively simple structure. The system has two electromagnets, springs and an armature. The system can be operated by reciprocal action between armature and two electromagnets. And, the operating event can be controlled by electrical signal from controller. Therefore, reduction of emission and fuel consumption can be achieved through valve event control at each engine operating condition. In this study, characteristics of EMV system were investigated by simulations and experiments. The results of simulation and experiment show that the core shape and material characteristics are dominant parameters on magnetic force and delay time. In order to apply the system to commercial engine, it has a compact size and high stiffness springs(50N/mm) to increase the valve speed. Because of high valve seating velocity, loud noise and high impact force generated, which can lead to reduction of actuator durability. Therefore, further research is required to reduce valve seating velocity.

  • An ElectroMagnetic Actuator (EMA) is designed and assessed numerically and experimentally. The EMA has the advantage to be without contact with the structure so it could be applied to light and small mechanism. Nevertheless, the open-loop instability and the nonlinear dynamic behavior with respect to the excitation frequency could limit its application field. The EMA is designed and dimensioned as a function of the experimental structure to be controlled. An inverse model of the EMA is proposed in order to implement a linear action block for the used frequency range. The control strategy is a fuzzy controller with displacements and velocities as inputs. A fuzzy controller of Takagi-Sugeno type is used. The air gap is estimated by using a modal approximation of the displacements issued from all measurements. Several configurations of control are assessed by using numerical simulations. The block diagram used for numerical simulations is implemented under Dspace$^{(R)}$ environment. The implemented controller was tested experimentally in the context of impact perturbations. The results obtained show the effectiveness of the developed procedures and the robustness of the implemented control.

  • This paper presents an optimizing method for wireless charging system, specifically focused on the capsule endoscope applications. In order to increase the wireless power transfer efficiency of electro-magnetic resonance coupled coils, this paper investigates the impact factors of the power transfer efficiency in small battery capacity system and proposes a efficiency optimizing method based on frequency control. Simulation results show that the proposed efficiency optimal control method can effectively stabilize the wireless power transfer efficiency so as to successfully solve the main issue of transfer efficiency variation with distance and as well as parasitic element.
