Magnetic Disturbance Model-Embedded Heading Estimation Filter for Time-Varying Magnetic Environments (시변 자기 환경에 강한 자기왜곡 모델 내장형 헤딩 추정 필터)

  • With regards to heading estimation using gyroscope and magnetometer signals, magnetic disturbance added in the magnetometer signals is a main degradation factor in the estimation accuracy. Although there are a number of existing mechanisms that may properly compensate for the magnetic disturbances, they are designed to react only to the magnetic disturbances, but not to the time derivative of disturbances. Note that the sensors may experience abrupt changes in the magnetic disturbances, particularly for ambulatory applications. This paper proposes a magnetic disturbance model-embedded heading estimation filter for time-varying magnetic environments. The proposed magnetic disturbance model is based on a first-order Markov chain with a conditional switching technique depending on the time derivative of disturbances. Once a high amount of derivative is detected, the corrupted magnetometer signals are discarded to protect the filter from them. In our experimental results, the averaged heading error of tests was $1.46^{\circ}$, while that of the original approach without switching was $5.75^{\circ}$.

  • Conventional magnetic levitation systems could show unsatisfactory performance under air-gap disturbance due to rail irregularities. In this paper, we propose a feedback control system with discrete Kalman filter for air-gap disturbance attenuation. It is shown that excellent system performance can be obtained with the use of discrete Kalman filter, and that results from experiments agree well with those of simulations.

  • The increasing demand for high density packaging technologies and the evolution to mixed digital and analogue devices has been the con-set of increasing research in thin film multi-layer technologies such as the passive components integration technology. In this paper, Cu and TaO thin film with RF sputtering was deposited for spiral inductor and MOM capacitor on the $SiO_2$/Si(100) substrate. MOM capacitor and spiral inductor were fabricated for L-C band pass filter by sputtering and lift-off. We are analyzed and designed thin films L-C passive components for band pass filter at 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz, important devices for mobile communication system. Based on the high-Q values of passive components, MOM capacitor and spiral inductors for L-C band pass filter, a low insertion loss of L-C passive components can be realized with a minimized chip area. The insertion loss was 3 dB for a 1.8 GHz filter, and 5 dB for a 900 MHz filter. This paper also discusses a analysis and practical design to thin-film L-C band pass filter.

  • Radioactive Corrosion Products (CRUD) which are generated by the neutron activation of general corrosion products at the nuclear power plant are the major source of occupational radiation exposure. Most of the CRUD has a characteristic of showing strong ferrimagnetisms. Along with the new development and production of permanent magnet (rare earth magnet) which generates much stronger magnetic field than the conventional magnet, new type of magnetic filter that can separate CRUD efficiently and eventually reduce radiation exposure of personnel at nuclear power plant is suggested. This separator consists of inner and outer magnet assemblies, coolant channel and container surrounding the outer magnet assembly. The rotational motion of the inner and outer permanent magnet assemblies surrounding the coolant channel by driving motor system produces moving alternating magnetic fields in the coolant channel. The CRUD can be separated from the coolant by the moving alternating magnetic field. This study describes the results of preliminary experiment performed with the different flow rates of coolant and rotation velocities of magnet assemblies. This new magnetic filter shows better performance results of filtering the magnetite at coolant (water). How rates, rotating velocities of magnet assemblies and particle sizes turn out to be very important design parameters.

Coupling Structures in Combline Resonators (Combline 공진기 내의 결합구조)

  • Three types of the coupling structures in combline resonators are presented: magnetic, electric, and mixed coupling structures. The magnetic coupling structure is provided by the window, and the electric coupling is provided by the electric probe. The mixed coupling structure which is the superposition of the magnetic and electric coupling structures, is proposed for the electric coupling in combline resonators with easy tuning capability. The responses of each coupling structure are shown. A 4-pole combline filter is designed and fabricated as an application of those coupling structures, and shows good filter responses.

Constraint-Combined Adaptive Complementary Filter for Accurate Yaw Estimation in Magnetically Disturbed Environments

  • One of the major issues in inertial and magnetic measurement unit (IMMU)-based 3D orientation estimation is compensation for magnetic disturbances in magnetometer signals, as the magnetic disturbance is a major cause of inaccurate yaw estimation. In the proposed approach, a kinematic constraint is used to provide a measurement equation in addition to the accelerometer and magnetometer signals to mitigate the disturbance effect on the orientation estimation. Although a Kalman filter (KF) is the most popular framework for IMMU-based orientation estimation, a complementary filter (CF) has its own advantages over KF in terms of mathematical simplicity and ease of implementation. Accordingly, this paper introduces a quaternion-based CF with a constraint-combined correction equation. Furthermore, the weight of the constraint relative to the magnetometer signal is adjusted to adapt to magnetic environments to optimally deal with the magnetic disturbance. In the results of our validation experiments, the average and maximum of yaw errors were $1.17^{\circ}$ and $1.65^{\circ}$ from the proposed CF, respectively, and $8.88^{\circ}$ and $14.73^{\circ}$ from the conventional CF, respectively, showing the superiority of the proposed approach.

  • Magnetic disturbance is one of the main factors that deteriorate the accuracy of orientation estimation methods based on inertial/magnetic sensor signals. This paper proposes a parallel Kalman filter(KF) that explicitly detects magnetic disturbances and thus can accurately estimate 3D orientation in magnetically disturbed environments. Due to the parallel nature of the proposed KF, even severe magnetic disturbances only affect yaw estimation, while roll and pitch values remain accurate. Consequently, the proposed KF can be effectively used in various applications that involve magnetically inhomogeneous environments, such as robots, ships, and planes.

Feasibility study of improved median filtering in PET/MR fusion images with parallel imaging using generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisition

  • This study aimed to analyze the applicability of the improved median filter in positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance (MR) fusion images based on parallel imaging using generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisition (GRAPPA). In this study, a PET/MR fusion imaging system based on a 3.0T magnetic field and 18F radioisotope were used. An improved median filter that can set a mask of the median value more efficiently than before was modeled and applied to the acquired image. As quantitative evaluation parameters of the noise level, the contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and coefficient of variation (COV) were calculated. Additionally, no-reference-based evaluation parameters were used to analyze the overall image quality. We confirmed that the CNR and COV values of the PET/MR fusion images to which the improved median filter was applied improved by approximately 3.32 and 2.19 times on average, respectively, compared to the noisy image. In addition, the no-reference-based evaluation results showed a similar trend for the noise-level results. In conclusion, we demonstrated that it can be supplemented by using an improved median filter, which suggests the problem of image quality degradation of PET/MR fusion images that shortens scan time using GRAPPA.

RF Integrated Electromagnetic-Noise Filters Incorporated with Nano-granular Co41Fe38AI13O8 Soft Magnetic Thin Films on Coplanar Transmission Line

  • The RF integrated noise filters are fabricated by photolithography. The stack for the electromagnetic noise filters consists of the nano-granular ($Co_{41}Fe_{38}AI_{13}O_8$) soft magnetic film / $SiO_2$ / Cu transmission line / seed layer (Cu/Ti) / $SiO_2$-substrate. A good signal-attenuation feature along with a low signal-reflection feature is observed in the present filters. Especially in the noise filter incorporated with a $Co_{41}Fe_{38}AI_{13}O_8$ magnetic film with lateral dimensions of $2000{\mu}m$ wide, 15 mm long and $1{\mu}m$ thick, the maximum magnitude of signal attenuation reaches -55 dB, and the magnitude of signal reflection is below -10 dB in the overall frequency range. And this level of signal attenuation is much larger than that of a noise filter incorporated with a Fe magnetic film.
