  • Mn doped ZnO films were prepared on Si (100) substrates using sol-gel method. The prepared films were annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for decomposition and oxidation of the precursors. XRD analysis revealed the presence of ZnMnO hexagonal wurtzite phase along with the presence of small quantity of $ZnMn_2O_3$ secondary phase and poor crystalline nature. The 2D, 3D views of magnetic domains and domain profiles were obtained using magnetic force microscopy at room temperature. Rectangular shaped domains with an average size of 4.16 nm were observed. Magnetic moment measurement as a function of magnetic field was measured using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry at room temperature. The result showed the ferromagnetic hysteresis loop with a curie temperature higher than 300 K.

  • A magneto-current (MC) was investigated for magnetic tunnel transistor (MTT) with amorphous n-type Si film. A relative MC (more than 49.6%) was observed at an emitter-base bias voltage ($V_{EB}$) of 0.65 V at room temperature. Above a $V_{EB}$ of 0.70 V, however, a rapid decrease in MC was observed in the amorphous Si-based MTT. The collector current increasing and transfer ratio as emitter-base voltage were mainly due to the rapid creation electrons of conduction band states in the Si collector. This approach would make integration in various components and systems easier than a MTT grown on a semiconductor wafer.

  • The mechanism of optical interaction of two nanoholes, milled in an opaque gold film, by means of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation is investigated. The interaction depends on the polarization direction of the incident light when the nanohole pair is illuminated through uniform single antenna excitations. It is shown that by illuminating one of the nanoholes, under single antenna excitation, the other nanohole can be excited indirectly via propagated SPPs from the excited nanohole. In addition, it is found that the spectrum of electromagnetic power above the surface of the metallic film at an arbitrary point along the axis of the nanohole pair presents two resonant peaks. These peaks are due to the optical interaction between nanoholes, where the short- and long-wavelength peaks can be assigned to in-phase and antiphase interactions of magnetic dipoles relative to each nanohole, respectively. The magnetic coupled dipole approximation (MCDA) method confirms the simulation results.

  • In this study, the dynamic flying characteristics of the worn head sliders are investigated theoretically due to the change in head geometry caused by head and disk contact. The film shapes can be approximated as taper- truncated cycloidal-flat film. Two-dimensional time dependent modified Reynolds equation included molecular slip effect are formulated with neglected the roughness effect. The motion of head slider was assumed to have two degree of freedom in this work. Finite difference approximation with Newton Raphson iterative technique and the fourth order Runge-Kutta method were implemented to obtain the transient response of the slider head with various change in head geometry numerically and compared with the transient response of the IBM3380 type head slider. The simulation results show the film shape has affects significantly on the static and dynamic characteristic of slider head in magnetic storage systems.

  • We report on the epitaxial growth of tetragonal $DO_{22}$-type Mn3Ga films on GaSb (001) using molecular beam epitaxy and the related structural and magnetic properties. The as-studied $Mn_3Ga$ film was found to exhibit relatively small coercivity around 400 Oe, which differs greatly from the hard magnetic properties of $Mn_3Ga$ bulk specimen or films that are normally reported. This difference was probably attributed to the effects of the GaSb (001) substrate that forced the $Mn_3Ga$ film to be two-dimensionlly stabilized in the (114) orientation and thus led to the modified intrinsic properties of $Mn_3Ga$ films. The growth orientation of the Mn3Ga (114)//GaSb (001) also caused the easy magnetocrystalline direction located in the film plane due to the dominant shape anisotropy in the thin films.

  • In this work, the dynamic characteristics of an oil-lubricated, short SFD with a central feeding groove are derived based on a theoretical analysis considering the effect of a groove. The validity of the analysis is investigated experimentally using an Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system as an exciter. For the theoretical solution, the fluid film forces of a grooved SFD are analytically derived so that the dynamic coefficients of a SFD are expressed in terms of its design parameters. (omitted)

  • The effect of field annealing on the velocity changes of magneto surface acoustic wave (MSAW) devices has been investigated for deposited $(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_{89}Zr_{11}$ (x = 0~1.0) amorphous films. By means of two step field annealing at $195^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute in the magnetic field of 130 Oe, the MSAW device with x=0.4 film among the devices showed the superior velocity change of 0.1 %. This gigantic value was obtained in the DC bias field of 40 Oe at the exciting frequency of 8.7 MHz. It was confirmed that such behavior was due to the variation of differential permeability caused by an optimal stress within the magnetic film.
