  • This paper is about the design of 3-axis magnetic sensor module which detects parking and moving vehicle. For the sensor module, MR Sensor from Honeywell of which maximum measurement range is ${\pm}2$[G] is used. It also consisted of amplifier and sensor filter and fabricated $30{\times}50$[mm] PCB. Fabricated sensor module produced helmholtz coil of which the length is 1.2[m] of 3-axis to know the performance. It installed sensor module at the center and measured the detected magnetic field. In result, 3-axis were detected as 0.2~0.3[mG] and the drift of the fluctuation of magnetic field was stabilized at 0.03[mG] unit. For the performance evaluation of the vehicle detection, after the entry and parking of the vehicle, variation of magnetic field was measured as 0.323~0.695[G] which the average 0.5[G] of the earth magnetic field was the center and the range of variation was confirmed as 0.37[G]. Therefore, the designed magnetic sensor can be used as the vehicle detection sensor module.

  • We report on the design and experimental results of a large diameter faraday rotator for the high-power laser system(KLF: Kaeri laser facility) that was completed in late 2007s at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The design involves modelling the magnetic field of cylindrical coil with large diameter(110 mm). Magnetic field generation coil is designed by 6 layers using a rectangular wire with cross-sectional area $3{\times}5[mm^2]$. We obtain an isolation ratio for optical feedback of 35 dB at 1064 nm and magnetic field strengths ${\sim}25kG$. We expect that the design can be widely used optical isolators in high-power laser system.

  • AC Superconducting Generators (ACSG) are featured by 3D magnetic flux distribution, which decreases in the direction of axis. For this reason, when ACSG is optimal designed, 3D magnetic field analysis is required. This paper proposes 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results normalized by 3D FEA according to the position of armature coil and the ratio of field coil width to axial length in order to reduce the analysis time. By using the proposed data, the reasonable 3D FEA results of ACSG can be only predicted by 2D FEA results. The validity of the 3D FEA results is verified by comparison with the experimental results of 30kVA superconducting synchronous generator.

  • Most open magnetic resonance imaging systems have used the planar gradient coils whose inductances were minimized through the magnetic energy minimization procedure in the spatial frequency domain. Though the planar gradient coils have smaller inductance than conventional gradient coils, the planar gradient coils often suffer from their poor magnetic field linearity. Scaling the spatial frequencies of the current density function designed by the magnetic energy minimization, magnetic field linearity of the planar gradient coils can be greatly improved with small sacrifice of gradient coil inductance. We have found that the figure of merit of the planar gradient coils, defined by the gradient strength divided by the linearity error and the inductance, can be improved by proposed technique.

  • LDM(Linear DC Motor) are used in high speed, high-precision position control system. Because of these advatages, LDM has already used in the motor of pen-recorder, magnetic-disk devices. Under the limited dimension, we propose the design method of LDM by magnetic circuit. In this paper, a relation between the thrust constant and size of a LDM that is moving coil type with unipolar is described, which is defined as a simple relational equation. To maximize the rate of thrust to the volume of LDM, the magnetic flux density in the yoke is adjusted to the value of magnetic equation By the magnetic field analysis(FEM), the validity of the equation is confirmed.

  • Vibration assisted cutting (VAC) is one of the promising methods for precision machining, which has been normally equipped with piezoelectric materials. In this paper, a feasibility of applying magnetostrictive materials to VAC as a cutting device instead of piezoelectric materials was studied. For this, the vibrational characteristics of a magnetostrictive material was investigated with respect to a coil design, a preload, and the effects of a biasing and an exciting magnetic fields. The output strain of a magnetostrictive material is restricted due to an increasing inductive impedance as the exciting frequency increases and the heat of coil, etc. Through the experimental results, it was found that the biasing and the exciting magnetic field affected the output performance significantly but not the preload. In conclusion, the magnetostrictive material could be used only in the low frequency range but not a good candidate for high frequency actuating application.

  • Persistent mode HTS pancake coil has been fabricated using a coated conductor by a "wind-and-flip" method. A coated conductor with the length of 1.2 meters was divided at the center along the length. The sliced coated conductor was wound on a pair of bobbins with a diameter of around 4 cm and two pancake coils connected superconductively without a resistive joint were prepared. By flipping one of the pancake coils, the magnetic field generated by each coil is to be aligned to the same direction and generate meaningful magnetic field while the magnetic fields of two spit coils are canceled without flipping. Permanent current was induced by flowing current to the coil immersed in liquid nitrogen pool using a power supply. A magnetic field of 48.8 Gauss was generated when 20 A of current was flowing in the pancake coils. The "Wind and flip" method can be applied for the fabrication of a long solenoid magnet by winding a sliced coated conductor on a cylindrical bobbin. It is also introduced that the construction of multiple sets of pancake (or solenoid) coils is possible by a "wind-and-flip" method using a wide coated conductor.

  • This paper analyzes re-degaussing performances of various breakdown conditions of degaussing coils in a ship to reduce underwater magnetic field anomaly due to the hull magnetization induced under the Earth's magnetic field. To achieve this, first, it is implemented to optimize degaussing coil currents by a magnetomotive force sensitivity formula combined with the coil effects. The re-degaussing processes are then executed when a breakdown occurs in degaussing coils, one by one. Finally, the re-degaussing performances are examined with the results of normal degaussing and coil breakdown conditions.

  • A new low-power, high-order optimization scheme to design surface gradient coils (SGC) is proposed for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although previous SGCs have been designed and constructed just to get strong linear gradients, this paper proposes more systematic ways of SGC design by minimizing electrical power consumption in the gradient coil and by removing unnecessary high-order field distortions in the imaging region. By assuming continuous current flow on the coil surface which may be or may not be planar, power consumption in the coil is minimized. According to the simulation results, the SGC designed by using the proposed scheme seems to produce much more uniform linear gradient field using less electrical power compared to the previously proposed SGCs.
